The distribution and enumeration of mast cell subpopulations within the respiratory tract of a high- and low-Ige responder rat strain was determined during postnatal development. Mast cells were identified in adjacent sections by the alcian blue (AB)/safranin (SAF) staining sequence, or using immunoperoxidase to detect the rat mast cell proteinases I (RMCPI) or II (RMCPII). At birth both mucosal mast cells (MMC) and connective tissue mast cells (CTMC) were represented in very low numbers at distinct locations throughout the respiratory tract. BACKGROUND: Asthmatics that are exposed to inhaled pollutants such as cigarette smoke (CS) have increased symptom severity. Approximately 25% of adult asthmatics are thought to be active smokers and many sufferers, especially in the third world, are exposed to high levels of inhaled pollutants. The mechanism by which CS or other airborne pollutants alter the disease phenotype and the effectiveness of treatment in asthma is not known. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of CS exposure on the phenotype and treatment sensitivity of rodent models of allergic asthma.

Immunosuppressive effects of newly developed synthetic progestins, melengestrol acetate (MGA), and three pyrimidine analogs, ara-cytidine (Ara-C), Ara-C 5'-benzoate and octanoate, were investigated on the heart allograft survival in the rat. BACKGROUND: Allograft heart valves are commonly used in cardiac surgery but ultimately fail. This situation is most acute in children. This study addresses the role of T cell-mediated immune damage in allograft valve failure.
METHODS: Syngeneic (Lewis to Lewis) or allogeneic (Brown Norway to Lewis) aortic valve grafts were implanted infrarenally into Lewis rat recipients (n = 24). Allogeneic valve grafts were also implanted into T cell-deficient rats (nude; n = 12). At 7, 14, and 28 days the valves were explanted and examined for structural integrity and cellular infiltration.

Contribution of kallikrein-kinin system to heat-induced substance P (SP) release into the periphery was studied by using plasma kininogens-deficient strain Brown Norway Katholiek (B/N-Ka) and normal strain Brown Norway Kitasato (B/N-Ki) rats. It has been shown that Brown-Norway rats develop an immune-type glomerulonephritis after treatment with various mercury-containing drugs. Anti-GBM antibodies were involved, at least in some animals. This glomerulonephritis induced a proteinuria. Strong evidence is given, suggesting that most mercury compounds, some of which, such as mercurial antiseptics, are widely used, could induce an immune-type glomerulonephritis. The question therefore arises, whether these drugs can be used any longer.
