Testosterone deficiency syndrome, which has sometimes been termed age-related or late-onset hypogonadism, is a syndrome characterized by both clinical manifestations as well as a biochemical deficiency of testosterone. This condition is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality, accounting for billions of dollars in health care costs. There is some evidence that suggests that restoring testosterone levels in these individuals may help to manage or delay progression of the associated morbidities. Furthermore, despite controversies in the literature and media, testosterone replacement

CONTEXT: Progestins delivered by a variety of routes have been demonstrated, in addition to their high contraceptive effect, to have substantial benefits in the treatment of various gynecological disorders, and the intrauterine route has particular efficacy in treating endometrial and myometrial disorders. It should be possible to extend this to prevention of disease.
THERAPY OF GYNECOLOGICAL DISEASE: Those conditions for which there is most evidence of therapeutic benefit from intrauterine release of progestins include heavy menstrual bleeding (due to most causes), endometrial hyperplasia, e

Virtual reality (VR) therapy is a new, neurorehabilitation intervention aimed at enhancing motor performance in children with hemiparetic cerebral palsy (CP). This case report investigated the effects of VR therapy on cortical reorganization and associated motor function in an 8-year-old male with hemiparetic CP. Cortical activation and associated motor development were measured before and after VR therapy using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and standardized motor tests. Before VR therapy, the bilateral primary sensorimotor cortices (SMCs) and ipsilateral supplementary motor are

This article presents a review of preliminary research of two studies of the efficacy of virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) to treat driving phobia. Study 1 describes a case study of a patient who completed a 7-day baseline followed by three sessions of VRET. Her peak anxiety decreased within and across sessions. At the post-treatment assessment, her phobic-related symptoms had diminished and she no longer met diagnostic criteria for driving phobia. Clinical improvement was maintained at 1-, 3-, and 7-month follow-up. In study 2, a multiple baseline across-subjects design was used to trea

BACKGROUND: Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) is characterized by an intense fear of negative judgement by others. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is recommended for treatment, but a substantial part of individuals with SAD either do not seek treatment or drop-out. CBT with Virtual Reality (VR)-based exposure has several advantages compared to traditional exposure methods, mainly due to increased control of situational elements. The aim of the current study is to develop a CBT program containing VR-based exposure. The intervention is targeted to adult patients suffering from SAD and treatment e

Based on the repertory grid technique, we developed Explore Your Meanings (EYME), a digital platform that helps patients explore identity values and internal conflicts using virtual reality (VR). EYME was part of a research project treating depression in young adults, including 10 weekly, 1-h sessions aimed at changing personal constructs-cognitive schemas that shape how individuals interpret reality. We present the case of Mary, a 21-year-old woman diagnosed with persistent major depressive disorder and social phobia. Early sessions with EYME revealed key implicit dilemmas in Mary's worldview

When used separately, virtual reality (VR) and mind-body therapies (MBTs) have the potential to reduce pain across various acute and chronic conditions. While their combination is increasingly used, no study offers a consolidated presentation of VR and MBTs. This study aims to propose an overview of the effectiveness of VR combined with MBTs (i.e., meditation, mindfulness, relaxation, and hypnosis) to decrease the pain experienced by healthy volunteers or patients. We conducted a scoping review of the literature using PubMed, Science Direct and Google Scholar and included 43 studies. Findings

Background: Fear of flying (FoF) is a phobia with 10-40% prevalence in the industrialized world. FoF is accompanied by severe economic, social, vocational, and emotional consequences. In recent years, virtual reality (VR)-based exposure therapy (VRET) for FoF has been introduced. Positive long-term efficacy of FoF-VRET has been reported by several studies, which, however, were limited by relatively small, non-representative samples and a lack of comparative pre/post functional efficacy outcome measures. Our objective was to evaluate the efficacy of a VRET treatment utilizing a large-scale VR s

Background: The high incidence of phobias and the limited accessibility of psychotherapy are the reasons for the search for alternative treatments that increase the availability of effective treatment. The use of virtual reality (VR) technology is an option with the potential to overcome the barriers in obtaining an effective treatment. VR exposure therapy (VRET) is based on a very similar rationale for in vivo exposure therapy. The study aimed to answer the question of how to perform exposure therapy in a virtual reality environment so that it is effective. Methods: A systematic review of the

At the dawn of humanity, it was rare to live beyond the age of 35 years, so the ovary was intended to function for a woman's entire life. Nowadays, it is not unusual for women to live into their 80s. This means that many of them spend 30-40% of their lives in the menopause at increased risk of various conditions associated with an absence of oestrogens (cardiovascular disease, bone mineral density loss). Reimplantation of frozen-thawed ovarian tissue is able to restore long-term ovarian endocrine function that can persist for more than 7 years (12 years if the procedure is repeated). If ovaria

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) has been used to treat a variety of fears and phobias.
AIM: To determine the feasibility (i.e. safety and efficacy) of using VRET to treat dental phobia.
METHOD: Safety was evaluated by determining any adverse events or symptom exacerbation. Efficacy of VRET was evaluated by comparing the reduction in dental anxiety scores (measured 16 times within a 14-week study period, and at 6-month follow-up), and its behavioural effects with that of an informational pamphlet (IP) on ten randomized patients with dental phobia using a controlled multipl

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) therapy has been successfully used as an adjunct therapy for the management of acute pain in adults and children, and evidence of potential efficacy in other health applications is growing. However, minimal research exists on the value of VR as an intervention for chronic pain.
OBJECTIVE: This case series examined the value of VR to be used as an adjunctive therapy for chronic pain patients in their own homes.
METHODS: An exploratory approach using a case series and personal interviews was used. Ten chronic pain patients received VR therapy for 30 min on alte

Frequency of use of any anticoagulant in patients with AF and high risk of stroke and systemic embolism was low (30.9% overall, novel oral anticoagulants - 5.7%). But portions of patients who according to documents received antiaggregants or no antithrombotic drugs at all were high (53.6 and 13.4%, respectively). Among patients receiving warfarin only 19.6% checked international normalized ratio (INR) every month while 75% did it on

The isolated effect of Virtual Reality Based Exposure Therapy (VRBET) for agoraphobia was analyzed through a comparative trial involving the first 10 agoraphobic participants. The participants were randomly assigned to two groups: VREBT only and VREBT combined with cognitive therapy. All the required Virtual Environments (VE) were created with an inexpensive Game Level Editor (GLE). Outcome measures supported the immersive effect of the VEs. Questionnaires, behavioral tests and physiological measures indicated a positive effect of VRBET alone. The addition of cognitive therapy to VREBT did not

Postmenopausal estrogen deprivation has been suggested as a risk factor for lower urinary tract dysfunction including stress incontinence, overactive bladder and recurrent urinary tract infection. These symptoms could have enormous effects on individuals and health-care providers in terms of impact on quality of life and cost. Recent randomized, controlled trials suggested that systemic hormone replacement therapy does have a negative effect on female lower urinary tract function, probably because of the progestogen component. Further, it may be unacceptable for many women because of concerns

Virtual reality therapy (VRT), based on this sophisticated technology, has been recently used in the treatment of subjects diagnosed with acrophobia, a disorder that is characterized by marked anxiety upon exposure to heights and avoidance of heights. Conventional VR systems for the treatment of acrophobia have limitations, over-costly devices or somewhat unrealistic graphic scenes. The goal of this study was to develop an inexpensive and more realistic virtual environment (VE) in which to perform exposure therapy for acrophobia. It is based on a personal computer, and a virtual scene of a bun

The chapter describes the characteristics of the Experiential-Cognitive Therapy (ECT) protocol for Panic Disorder and Agoraphobia. The goal of ECT is to decondition fear reactions, to modify misinterpretational cognition related to panic symptoms and to reduce anxiety symptoms. This is possible in an average of eight sessions of treatment plus an assessment phase and booster sessions, through the integration of Virtual Experience and traditional cognitive-behavioral techniques. We decided to employ the techniques included in the cognitive-behavioral approach because they showed high levels of

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common and disabling mental health condition, with a substantial proportion of patients failing to achieve symptom relief through standard pharmacological or psychotherapeutic treatments. Treatment-resistant depression (TRD), therefore, remains a significant clinical and public health challenge. To address this, our team developed Avatar Therapy, a virtual reality-based intervention with strong experiential and relational components. This pilot clinical trial aimed to evaluate the short-term efficacy of Avatar Therapy for TRD on 12 participants.
