The aim of this study was to examine serum and cellular markers of immune activation in HIV-positive (HIV+) patients with and without current opportunistic infections. Fc gamma receptor (Fc gamma R) expression on monocytes, serum neopterin and beta-2-microglobulin were studied. Thirty HIV+ patients (grouped according to Centers for Disease Control (CDC) classification) were studied and compared with 27 normal blood donor controls. The distribution of HLA class II (DR, DP, DQ) and Fc gamma R (I, II, III) was analyzed in the epithelia of patients with advanced marginal periodontitis using cryostat sections incubated with monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) against the Langerhans cell (LC) (CD1a) and various subtypes of HLA class II and Fc gamma R, and the indirect immunofluorescence technique. Antibodies engage both activating Fc Receptors and the inhibitory receptor FcγRIIB. Why macrophages need a dedicated inhibitory receptor rather than simply tuning activating receptor signaling is unclear. Antibody-mediated rejection, a leading cause of kidney transplant failure, is believed to be largely mediated by natural killer cells, with CD16a (FCGR3a) Fc receptors engaging the Fc portions of donor-specific antibodies on the graft endothelium, possibly in concert with "missing self" recognition. 20 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) had circulating IgG-containing immune complexes. These complexes bind to lymphocyte Fc gamma-receptors in vitro; there was also evidence for in-vivo binding. Such in-vivo binding to T and K lymphocytes may exert an immunomodulatory effect on these cells, and may also explain some of the serological and cellular abnormalities in PBC.

Culture of mesenteric lymph node cells from rats infected with Nippostrongylus brasiliensis resulted in the release of a soluble factor (IgE-binding factor) that can inhibit rosette formation of Fc epsilon R(+) lymphocytes with IgE-coated red cells. The factor is specifically absorbed with IgE-coated Sepharose. It has a m.w. of between 10,000 and 20,000. The major source of IgE-binding factor appears to be Fc epsilon R(+) T cells.
