Detection and recognition of metal surface corrosion based on CBG-YOLOv5s.

The automatic detection of the degree of surface corrosion on metal structures is of significant importance for assessing structural damage and safety. To effectively identify the corrosion status on the surface of coastal metal facilities, this study proposed a CBG-YOLOv5s model for metal surface corrosion detection, based on the YOLOv5s model. Firstly, we integrated the Convolutional Block Attention Module (CBAM) into the C3 module and developed the C3CBAM module. This module effectively enhanced the channel and spatial attention capabilities of the feature map, thereby improving the feature

Rectify representation bias in vision-language models for long-tailed recognition.

Natural data typically exhibits a long-tailed distribution, presenting great challenges for recognition tasks. Due to the extreme scarcity of training instances, tail classes often show inferior performance. In this paper, we investigate the problem within the trendy visual-language (VL) framework and find that the performance bottleneck mainly arises from the recognition confusion between tail classes and their highly correlated head classes. Building upon this observation, unlike previous research primarily emphasizing class frequency in addressing long-tailed issues, we take a novel perspec

Apperceptive and Associative Forms of Phonagnosia.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Pronagnosia is a rare acquired or developmental pathological condition that consists of a selective difficulty to recognize familiar people by their voices. It can be distinguished into two different categories: apperceptive phonagnosia, which denotes a purely perceptual form of voice recognition disorder; and associative phonagnosia, in which patients have no perceptual defects, but cannot evaluate if the voice of a known person is or not familiar. The neural substrate of these two forms of voice recognition is still controversial, but it could concern different components

Structural insights into MIC2 recognition by MIC2-associated protein in Toxoplasma gondii.

Microneme protein 2 (MIC2) and MIC2-associated protein (M2AP) play crucial roles in the gliding motility and host cell invasion of Toxoplasma gondii. Complex formation between MIC2 and M2AP is required for maturation and transport from the microneme to the parasite surface. Previous studies showed that M2AP associates with the 6th TSR domain of MIC2 (TSR6), but the detailed interaction remains unclear. In this study, we report crystal structures of M2AP alone and in complex with TSR6. TSR domains have an unusually thin, long structure with a layer of intercalated residues on one side. The non-

Sign language recognition by means of common spatial patterns: An analysis.

Currently there are around 466 million hard of hearing people and this amount is expected to grow in the coming years. Despite the efforts that have been made, there is a communication barrier between deaf and hard of hearing signers and non-signers in environments without an interpreter. Different approaches have been developed lately to try to deal with this issue. In this work, we present an Argentinian Sign Language (LSA) recognition system which uses hand landmarks extracted from videos of the LSA64 dataset in order to distinguish between different signs. Different features are extracted

Relating emotional variables to recognition memory performance: a large-scale re-analysis of megastudy data.

The megastudy paradigm has become an important tool for cognitive science. One advantage to the megastudy is that existing data can be reanalysed in light of novel hypotheses. In the current study, recognition memory data for 4819 words were obtained. Multiple regression analyses assessed the influence of emotional variables on recognition memory performance (i.e., hits minus false alarm rates H-FAs) for the words. The predictor variables included valence, arousal, extremity of valence (the degree of negative or positive meaning), context valence (the degree to which a word typically appears i

The road not taken: an integrative theoretical model of reading disability.

This article describes a theoretical model of reading disability that integrates a wide range of research findings in cognitive psychology, reading, and education across the age and grade span. The model shows how reading disability relates to normal reading acquisition, and includes four possible patterns of reading disability: nonalphabetic readers, compensatory readers, nonautomatic readers, and readers delayed in the acquisition of word-recognition skills. We compare our model to the models of other investigators and argue that our model is especially useful to practitioners. Finally, we d

Visual Object Discrimination Impairment as an Early Predictor of Mild Cognitive Impairment and Alzheimer's Disease.

OBJECTIVE: Detection of cognitive impairment suggestive of risk for Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression is crucial to the prevention of incipient dementia. This study was performed to determine if performance on a novel object discrimination task improved identification of earlier deficits in older adults at risk for AD. METHOD: In total, 135 participants from the 1Florida Alzheimer's Disease Research Center [cognitively normal (CN), Pre-mild cognitive impairment (PreMCI), amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI), and dementia] completed a test of object discrimination and traditional memor

Number reading in pure alexia--a review.

It is commonly assumed that number reading can be intact in patients with pure alexia, and that this dissociation between letter/word recognition and number reading strongly constrains theories of visual word processing. A truly selective deficit in letter/word processing would strongly support the hypothesis that there is a specialized system or area dedicated to the processing of written words. To date, however, there has not been a systematic review of studies investigating number reading in pure alexia and so the status of this assumed dissociation is unclear. We review the literature on p

Behavioral change and its neural correlates in visual agnosia after expertise training.

Agnosia, the impairment in object and face recognition despite intact vision and intelligence, is one of the most intriguing and debilitating neuropsychological deficits. The goal of this study was to determine whether S.M., an individual with longstanding visual agnosia and concomitant prosopagnosia, can be retrained to perform visual object recognition and, if so, what neural substrates mediate this reacquisition. Additionally, of interest is the extent to which training on one type of visual stimulus generalizes to other visual stimuli, as this informs our understanding of the organization

Cerebellum and Emotion Recognition.

In this chapter, after having clarified which definition of emotion we followed, starting from Darwin and evolutionary psychology, we tried to examine the main mechanisms of emotional recognition from a behavioral and cerebral point of view: emotional contagion and cognitive empathy. The link between these skills and social cognition has been discussed. We tried to understand through the description of comparative studies on animals, studies on populations with cerebellar lesions in animals and humans, neurostimulation studies, and studies on neuropsychiatric pathologies with alterations to th

MRI correlates of emotion recognition in vascular dementia: An empty systematic review.

Emotion recognition is a core component of social cognition and has been extensively investigated in several neurodegenerative disorders. However, despite the high prevalence and heterogeneous cerebrovascular pathology of vascular dementia (VaD), evidence on emotion recognition in this population remains fragmented and poorly characterized at the neuroimaging level. This study conducted an empty systematic review to evaluate the current state of MRI-based research and identify critical gaps in the literature. In accordance with PRISMA guidelines, systematic searches were performed in Scopus, E

Differential effects of contextual congruency on recognition and retrieval of perceptual details.

Prediction errors arising from contextual violations play a fundamental role in learning and memory, yet their effects remain controversial. While some research suggests prediction errors enhance memory for incongruent information, other evidence shows that schema-congruent events are better remembered. This study investigates how contextual congruency during encoding affects both recognition memory and retrieval of fine-grained perceptual details. Using object-scene pairings, we examined whether predictions based on memory schemas differentially influence the encoding of congruent versus inco

A meta-analytic analysis of the acute effects of MDMA on empathy and emotion recognition in humans.

3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) is an amphetamine derivative known as an "entactogen," influencing emotional and social processing. Phase III clinical trials of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for post-traumatic stress disorder have reported promising results, and MDMA-assisted therapy is currently under regulatory review. However, the precise mechanisms underlying positive treatment outcomes remain largely unknown. This meta-analysis aims to systematically synthesize existing data on the effects of MDMA on empathy and emotion recognition. Specifically, we focus on two established tasks,

[Is understanding the mechanism of perception possible?].

Perception is the understanding by the brain of the different sensory information. In humans, information is mostly visual and is conveyed to the occipital cortex. MRI techniques suggest that it is deciphered in different areas of the temporal cortex, depending upon the observed scene. The neural codes used by neurons of these areas will be discussed in two instances: Recognition of written words and of faces. In the first case, an hypothesis using basic properties of neurons and hierarchy of local combination detectors, accounts for the invariance of their visual form. That it is relevant is

Impact of mask use on face recognition: an eye-tracking study.

We examined how mask use affects performance and eye movements in face recognition and whether strategy change reflected in eye movements is associated with performance change. Eighty-eight participants performed face recognition with masked faces either during learning only, during recognition only, or during both learning and recognition. As compared with the baseline condition where faces were unmasked during both learning and recognition, participants had impaired performance in all three scenarios, with larger impairment when mask conditions during learning and recognition did not match.

Is nevtral NEUTRAL? Visual similarity effects in the early phases of written-word recognition.

For simplicity, contemporary models of written-word recognition and reading have unspecified feature/letter levels-they predict that the visually similar substituted-letter nonword PEQPLE is as effective at activating the word PEOPLE as the visually dissimilar substituted-letter nonword PEYPLE. Previous empirical evidence on the effects of visual similarly across letters during written-word recognition is scarce and nonconclusive. To examine whether visual similarity across letters plays a role early in word processing, we conducted two masked priming lexical decision experiments (stimulus-ons

Recognizing emotion from facial expressions: psychological and neurological mechanisms.

Recognizing emotion from facial expressions draws on diverse psychological processes implemented in a large array of neural structures. Studies using evoked potentials, lesions, and functional imaging have begun to elucidate some of the mechanisms. Early perceptual processing of faces draws on cortices in occipital and temporal lobes that construct detailed representations from the configuration of facial features. Subsequent recognition requires a set of structures, including amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex, that links perceptual representations of the face to the generation of knowledge ab

Domain-general object recognition predicts human ability to tell real from AI-generated faces.

Faces created by artificial intelligence (AI) are now considered indistinguishable from real faces. Still, humans vary in their ability to detect these faces-a skill so novel it would have been useless a few years ago. We show that some individuals are consistently better at discriminating real from AI-generated faces. We used latent variable modeling to test whether this ability can be predicted by a domain-general ability, called o, which is measured as the shared variance between perceptual and memory judgments of both novel and familiar objects. We show that o predicts detection of AI-gene

The anterior fusiform gyrus: The ghost in the cortical face machine.

Face-selective regions in the human ventral occipito-temporal cortex (VOTC) have been defined for decades mainly with functional magnetic resonance imaging. This face-selective VOTC network is traditionally divided in a posterior 'core' system thought to subtend face perception, and regions of the anterior temporal lobe as a semantic memory component of an extended general system. In between these two putative systems lies the anterior fusiform gyrus and surrounding sulci, affected by magnetic susceptibility artifacts. Here we suggest that this methodological gap overlaps with and contributes
