The recording and prevalence of Inflammatory bowel disease in girls' primary care medical Spanish records.

PURPOSE: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) recording validation among girls in the Spanish Primary Care Database For Pharmacoepidemiological Research (BIFAP). METHODS: In this observational study, girls aged 9 to 18 years registered in BIFAP between 2002 and 2016, were followed up until there was a recorded IBD diagnosis or a referral to specialist indicating IBD. Anonymized profiles were reviewed to retrieve diagnosis confirmation (a positive colonoscopy or biopsy, specialist, or physician's comments mentioning the IBD diagnosis) or discarding (negative procedure results, alternative diagnosi

Prevalence of adult Huntington's disease in the UK based on diagnoses recorded in general practice records.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The prevalence of Huntington's disease (HD) in the UK is uncertain. Recently, it has been suggested that the prevalence may be substantially greater than previously reported. This study was undertaken to estimate the overall UK prevalence in adults diagnosed with HD, using data from primary care. METHODS: The electronic medical records of patients aged 21 years or more, with recorded diagnoses of HD, were retrieved from the UK's General Practice Research Database. Prevalence was estimated from the number of persons with recorded diagnoses of HD, on 1 July each year, be

NEW PARISH RECORDS FOR AEDES JAPONICUS IN LOUISIANA, USA.

Aedes japonicus is an invasive container-breeding mosquito species of considerable medical and veterinary importance. This species is native to eastern Asia but spread to North America in the late 1990s and to central Europe later. In the United States, Ae. japonicus was first detected in the Northeast in 1998. It has since spread to all states east of the Mississippi river including the five bordering states along the river's western bank (Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana) as well as to Nebraska, Oklahoma, Texas, Washington, Oregon, and Hawaii. In Louisiana, Ae. japonicus was fi

DOME: Directional medical embedding vectors from Electronic Health Records.

MOTIVATION: The increasing availability of Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems has created enormous potential for translational research. Recent developments in representation learning techniques have led to effective large-scale representations of EHR concepts along with knowledge graphs that empower downstream EHR studies. However, most existing methods require training with patient-level data, limiting their abilities to expand the training with multi-institutional EHR data. On the other hand, scalable approaches that only require summary-level data do not incorporate temporal dependenci

Discover overlooked complications after preeclampsia using electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia (PE) is a severe pregnancy complication characterized by hypertension and end-organ damage such as proteinuria. PE poses a significant threat to women's long-term health, including an increased risk of cardiovascular and renal diseases. Most previous studies have been hypothesis-based, potentially overlooking certain significant complications. This study conducts a comprehensive, non-hypothesis-based analysis of PE-complicated diagnoses after pregnancies using multiple large-scale electronic health records (EHR) datasets. METHOD: From the University of Michigan (UM) H

Heart Failure Management Innovation Enabled by Electronic Health Records.

Patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) require complex medical management across the continuum of care. Electronic health records (EHR) are currently used for traditional tasks of documentation, reviewing and managing test results, computerized order entry, and billing. Unfortunately many clinicians view EHR as merely digitized versions of paper charts, which create additional work and cognitive burden without improving quality or efficiency of care. In fact, EHR are revolutionizing the care of chronic diseases such as CHF. This review describes how appropriate use of technologies offere

Readmission prediction using deep learning on electronic health records.

Unscheduled 30-day readmissions are a hallmark of Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) patients that pose significant health risks and escalate care cost. In order to reduce readmissions and curb the cost of care, it is important to initiate targeted intervention programs for patients at risk of readmission. This requires identifying high-risk patients at the time of discharge from hospital. Here, using real data from over 7500 CHF patients hospitalized between 2012 and 2016 in Sweden, we built and tested a deep learning framework to predict 30-day unscheduled readmission. We present a cost-sensitiv

Metazoan parasites from odontocetes off New Zealand: new records.

Information about the parasite fauna of spectacled porpoises and cetaceans from New Zealand waters in general is scarce. This study takes advantage of material archived in collections of the Otago Museum in Dunedin and Massey University in Auckland, sampled from cetacean species found stranded along the New Zealand coastline between 2007 and 2014. Parasites from seven species of cetaceans (spectacled porpoise, Phocoena dioptrica (n = 2 individuals examined); pygmy sperm whale (n = 1); long-finned pilot whale, Globicephala melas (n = 1); Risso's dolphin, Grampus griseus (n = 1); short-beaked co

Surveys, Records, and the Study of Incarceration in Families.

More than 2 million American children have a parent incarcerated, making the consequences of parental incarceration for families critical to understand. A growing literature documents significant challenges not only among incarcerated men, but also among their spouses, partners, and children. Much remains to be learned about these experiences; however, and the data available for doing so are limited. This analysis takes steps to improve the quality of available data on paternal incarceration by supplementing a leading population-based survey of families with administrative criminal history rec

The birth of intensive care medicine: Björn Ibsen's records.

The birth of intensive care medicine was a process that took place in Copenhagen, Denmark, during and after the poliomyelitis epidemic in 1952/1953. The events that led to the creation of the first intensive care unit in the world in December 1953 are well described. It is generally agreed upon that the start of the process was the fact that an anaesthesiologist (Björn Ibsen) was brought out of the operating theatre and asked to use his skills on a 12-year-old girl suffering from polio. The medical record of the girl contains a minute-by-minute description of the historical event. A translatio

Data-driven approach for creating synthetic electronic medical records.

BACKGROUND: New algorithms for disease outbreak detection are being developed to take advantage of full electronic medical records (EMRs) that contain a wealth of patient information. However, due to privacy concerns, even anonymized EMRs cannot be shared among researchers, resulting in great difficulty in comparing the effectiveness of these algorithms. To bridge the gap between novel bio-surveillance algorithms operating on full EMRs and the lack of non-identifiable EMR data, a method for generating complete and synthetic EMRs was developed. METHODS: This paper describes a novel methodology

Identifying repeat DUI crash factors using state crash records.

The objective of this study is to identify high risk factors that are closely related to repeat DUI crashes using readily available information from the state crash records. Survival analysis was used and a Cox proportional hazards model was developed using the police-reported crash records in the state of Louisiana. A variety of variables were found to be significant in predicting repeat DUI crashes. The factors included the characteristics of the drivers (gender, race, and age), the types of the vehicle (light truck/pick up truck or other), the characteristics of the crash (hit-and-run, driv

[Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis in children. Case records 1985 - 2003].

Acute bacterial meningitis and sepsis are the most severe among invasive diseases due to Streptococcus pneumoniae, particularly in pediatric age, and present a high risk of mortality and neurologic sequelae. S. pneumoniae is a major worldwide pathogen in children. The widespread emergence of penicillin-resistant pneumococci, a new pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, and the epidemiological prevalence of some serotypes, have recently focused attention on S. pneumoniae disease. We reviewed the data on incidence, epidemiology, diagnosis, therapy in children hospitalized with acute bacterial meningiti
