First Report of Rhodnius stali Lent, Jurberg, and Galvão 1993 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) Naturally Infected by Trypanosoma cruzi in Concepción Department, Paraguay.

Most triatomine bugs inhabit nests and shelters of vertebrates, some of which are closely associated with palm trees. A few species occupy domestic and peridomestic habitats, posing a threat to human health as natural transmitters of Chagas disease. A peridomestic specimen that yielded positive results for Trypanosoma cruzi in both microscope and polymerase chain reaction tests was collected during a vector control survey in northeastern Paraguay. The specimen was identified as Rhodnius stali, marking a new record for the country. To the best of our knowledge, this is the southernmost report o

Effect of ectoparasitic Pimeliaphilus plumifer mites (Acari: Pterygosomatidae) on Meccus pallidipennis (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) and several other Chagas' disease vectors under laboratory conditions.

Several biological parameters were evaluated to determine the capacity of Pimeliaphilus plumifer as biological control agent of Triatominae bugs. When P. plumifer and bugs of a variety of triatomine species were forced together in cages in the laboratory, the incidence of mite infestation was the following: Meccus pallidipennis > M. bassolsae > Triatoma rubida > M. longipennis > M. picturatus, and practically no mites were found on T. infestans and Rhodnius prolixus. Adults and hexapod larvae of P. plumifer were the only stages found to parasitize on M. pallidipennis. Fourth and fifth instar n

The Male Reproductive System of the Kissing Bug, Rhodnius prolixus Stål, 1859 (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae): Arrangements of the Muscles and the Myoactivity of the Selected Neuropeptides.

The gross anatomy of the male reproductive structures and their associated musculature are described in the blood-gorging vector of Chagas disease, Rhodnius prolixus. The male reproductive system is composed of muscular tissues each performing contractions that aid in the movement of sperm out of the testis into the vas deferens, seminal vesicle and then into the ejaculatory duct, along with proteins and lipids from the transparent and opaque accessory glands. Phalloidin staining shows the various patterns of muscle fiber layers, from thin circular to more complex crisscross patterns, implying

Characterization of Feeding Behavior and its Relationship With the Longevity of Wild and Peridomestic Triatoma dimidiata, Latreille 1811 (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) Under Laboratory Conditions.

Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille 1811) is considered the second most important vector of the Trypanosa cruzi etiological agent of Chagas disease in Colombia. It has a life cycle that involves a domiciled, peridomiciled, and wild distribution. The study of feeding behavior and its influence on the survival of sylvatic and peridomestic populations can help identify a possible differential risk in the transmission of Chagas disease to humans, mainly in northwestern and east-central Colombia. We characterize the main parameters of feeding behavior and their influence on the longevity and survival of

Phylogenetic and phenotypic relationships among Triatoma carcavalloi (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae) and related species collected in domiciles in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil.

Triatoma carcavalloi is considered a rare Chagas disease vector often collected inside domiciles in Rio Grande do Sul State. In this Brazilian state, T. carcavalloi has been collected in the same ecotope (rock piles) with two other species (T. rubrovaria and T. circummaculata), with which it also shares morphological characteristics. Previous morphological studies placed T. carcavalloi in the same species complex ("infestans complex") and subcomplex ("rubrovaria subcomplex") as T. rubrovaria, whereas T. circummaculata was placed in the "circummaculata complex." Active dispersal in Triatoma infestans (Klug, 1834) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae): Effects of nutritional status, the presence of a food source and the toxicological phenotype.

In Argentina, the main vector of Chagas disease is Triatoma infestans (Klug, 1834). In recent years, the presence of T. infestans was reported in human dwelling after spraying with pyrethroids in several locations in Argentina. The presence of these insects can be attributed, among other factors, to colonization by bugs from sylvatic or peridomestic populations or to the evolution of resistance to insecticides. In both cases, the dispersal of insects is a determining factor. The aim was to determinate the interaction of dispersal with feeding, food resource and resistance to insecticides. Thre

Transmission ecology of Trypanosoma cruzi by Rhodnius prolixus (Reduviidae: Triatominae) infesting palm-tree species in the Colombian Orinoco, indicates risks to human populations.

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease, affecting approximately eight million individuals in tropical regions, is primarily transmitted by vectors. Rhodnius prolixus, a triatomine vector, commonly inhabits in ecotopes with diverse palm tree species, creating optimal conditions for vector proliferation. This study aims to explore the transmission ecology of Trypanosoma cruzi, the causative parasite of Chagas disease, by investigating the feeding patterns and natural infection rates of R. prolixus specimens collected from various wild palm species in the Colombian Orinoco region. Biology of Chagas disease vectors: biological cycle and emergence rates of Rhodnius marabaensis Souza et al., 2016 (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae) under laboratory conditions.

In Latin America, Chagas disease has been mostly transmitted to humans by contact with the feces or urine of triatomine species infected with the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi. There are currently 156 species in the subfamily Triatominae, distributed in 18 genera and five tribes. The prolixus group of the genus Rhodnius is composed of 11 species. Rhodnius marabaensis was the last species described and considered in this grouping of vectors. Knowledge about the biology, ecology, and behavior of these vectors is of great epidemiological importance, and in order to expand the knowledge of the biolo

A microscopy investigation of the complex problem of infertility of insect hybrids. Studies on the reproductive systems, eggshells, and karyotypes of the representatives of the genus Platymeris (Heteroptera, Reduviidae) and their hybrids.

Hybridisation is still a widely studied phenomenon that allows us to look at some processes differently. However, obtaining fertile hybrids, which we might consider in the long term as precursors of a new species, is still a field that requires research. Much of the research done so far indicates that hybrids are sterile - either sex or both. It is influenced by various mechanisms, both prezygotic and postzygotic reproductive isolation. Thanks to the use of light and transmission electron microscopy, our research has made it possible to understand, at least partially, the causes of infertility

Quantitative imagery analysis of spot patterns for the three-haplogroup classification of Triatoma dimidiata (Latreille, 1811) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae), an important vector of Chagas disease.

BACKGROUND: Spots and coloring patterns evaluated quantitatively can be used to discriminate and identify possible cryptic species. Species included in the Triatoma dimidiata (Reduviidae: Triatominae) complex are major disease vectors of Chagas disease. Phylogenetic studies have defined three haplogroups for Mexico and part of Central America. We report here our evaluation of the possibility of correctly discriminating these three T. dimidiata haplogroups using the pattern of the dorsal spots. METHODS: Digital images of the dorsal region of individuals from the three haplogroups were used. Im

Citizen science to complement the surveillance of Triatominae (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) with data of Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastea: Trypanosomatidae) infection and spatial distribution models in northeast Mexico.

The primary transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi, causative agent of Chagas disease, to humans and animals is through the feces and urine of Triatominae. Therefore, knowledge of their ecology and distribution is crucial for establishing effective surveillance programs with citizen participation. This is coupled with geographic distribution models to predict the risk of transmission in the areas most affected by Chagas disease. Therefore, this study aims to: a) document and validate citizen participation on the iNaturalist in the collection and observation of triatomines, as well as exploring risk

Comments on Two Controversial Oriental Assassin Bug Species of the Genus Rhynocoris (Heteroptera: Reduviidae: Harpactorinae), with the Description of R. minutus sp. nov. from China.

The two closely related Oriental species of the genus Rhynocoris, R. costalis (Stål, 1867) and R. fuscipes (Fabricius, 1787), exhibit remarkable morphological similarity, particularly in their overall red and black body coloration, including the head, thorax, and abdomen. Based on the examination of type specimens and non-type material collected from various localities of southern China, we found these two congeners were misidentified in many previous publications. Due to the restricted distribution and limited population size of R. fuscipes in China, most taxonomic, biological, and biocontrol
