The role of the bone myoregulation reflex in impact-loading activities: a new view of feedback control mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: The short-latency reflex (SLR), which occurs immediately after ground contact during jumping, is traditionally attributed to a muscle spindle-mediated stretch reflex, with a longer latency explained by slow muscle stretching. However, emerging evidence suggests that the bone myoregulation reflex (BMR) may provide a more physiologically parsimonious and biomechanically integrated explanation for this response. OBJECTIVES: This study compared the latencies of these reflexes and assessed the mechanical stimulus transmission delay to the muscle during impact. METHODS: Two experiments

Assessment of spasticity in hemiplegic cerebral palsy. II: Distal lower-limb reflex excitability and function.

A clinical method for measuring the stretch reflex threshold and gain of muscles acting across the ankle joint in children with congenital hemiplegia is described. The stretch reflexes of all limbs were velocity-dependent. Hemiparetic limbs were not necessarily spastic compared with non-paretic limbs, suggesting that the term 'spastic hemiplegia' should be used more selectively and emphasis be placed on the heterogeneity of the hemisyndromes of childhood. Abnormal motor control, planning and dexterity, the hemipostures and plastic (non-electrical) muscle changes may be more important measures

Stretch-induced syncope: An examination of a rarely recognized condition.

Stretch-Induced Syncope is an uncommon form of situational syncope triggered by stretching upper-back, neck, and shoulder muscles. A review of 133 publications in PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, Scielo, and Google Scholar, using search terms such as "stretch syncope," "syncope with stretch," and "stretch-induced syncope," identified 12 studies describing 30 patient cases (ages 5-26). Stretch-induced syncope episodes were triggered by neck hyperextension and upper-back stretching, producing brief loss of consciousness. Early reports attributed these events to vertebral artery compressio

Physiological tremor increases when skeletal muscle is shortened: implications for fusimotor control.

KEY POINTS: In tonic, isometric, plantarflexion contractions, physiological tremor increases as the ankle joint becomes plantarflexed. Modulation of physiological tremor as a function of muscle stretch differs from that of the stretch reflex amplitude. Amplitude of physiological tremor may be altered as a function of reflex pathway gains. Healthy humans likely increase their γ-static fusimotor drive when muscles shorten. Quantification of physiological tremor by manipulation of joint angle may be a useful experimental probe of afferent gains and/or the integrity of automatic fusimotor control.

Movement reduces the dynamic response of muscle spindle afferents and motoneuron synaptic potentials in rat.

Among the mechanisms that may result in modulation of the stretch reflex by the recent history of muscle contraction is the history dependence observed under some conditions in the response properties of muscle spindles. The present study was designed to test one report that in successive trials of muscle stretch-release, spindle afferent firing during stretch, i.e., the dynamic response shows no history dependence beyond the initial burst of firing at stretch onset. Firing responses of spindle afferents were recorded during sets of three consecutive trials of triangular stretch-release applie

The early history of the knee-jerk reflex in neurology.

Medical interest in the knee-jerk reflex began in about 1875 with simultaneous and independent publications by Wilhelm Heinrich Erb (1840-1921) and Carl Friedrich Otto Westphal (1833-1890) contending that the knee jerk was absent (and the ankle clonus was present) in all clear cases of locomotor ataxia (tabes dorsalis). Physicians in the medical communities of Europe, Great Britain, and North America responded with case and large group studies that tested this contention. These studies revealed the usefulness of the knee jerk and other myotatic reflexes, but also unexpected characteristics. Th

Pathophysiology of spasticity: implications for neurorehabilitation.

Spasticity is the velocity-dependent increase in muscle tone due to the exaggeration of stretch reflex. It is only one of the several components of the upper motor neuron syndrome (UMNS). The central lesion causing the UMNS disrupts the balance of supraspinal inhibitory and excitatory inputs directed to the spinal cord, leading to a state of disinhibition of the stretch reflex. However, the delay between the acute neurological insult (trauma or stroke) and the appearance of spasticity argues against it simply being a release phenomenon and suggests some sort of plastic changes, occurring in th

Ankle clonus and its relationship with the medium-latency reflex response of the soleus by peroneal nerve stimulation.

Ankle clonus and soleus medium-latency reflex are stretch-induced responses. Clonus is traditionally considered to be the result of oscillation in the group Ia mediated spinal stretch reflex but the soleus medium-latency reflex response originates mainly from the activation of group II afferents. The medium latency reflex response (MLR) was recorded in soleus muscle by peroneal nerve stimulation and clonus beats were recorded in soleus muscle using EMG in 19 spastic patients. The dorsiflexion (DF) and plantarflexion (PF) times of clonus and the half-period were calculated based on accelerometr

Masseter reflex potentials in olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy.

We recorded masseter reflex potentials to examine the correlation between the masseter reflex and the muscle stretch reflexes of limbs in 19 patients with olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA). The patients were subdivided into hyper- (n = 5), normo- (n = 7) and hypo- (n = 7) reflexia groups according to the degrees of the conventional deep tendon jerks in the upper limbs. The masseter reflex potentials, elicited by tapping the chin with a reflex hammer, were recorded from the bilateral masseters using a pair of surface electrodes. The latency of the potentials in the hyporeflexia was signific

Long-lasting reductions of spasticity induced by skin electrical stimulation.

We studied the effects of electrical stimulation of the skin on upper extremity spasticity in nine hemiparetic stroke subjects. The effects were quantified by comparing reflex torque responses elicited during ramp and hold angular perturbations of the elbow recorded before and after low-intensity skin stimulation. Electrical stimulation was applied to skin over the biceps muscle for a period of ten minutes at a 20 Hz frequency, pulse duration 0.1 ms, with an intensity level below motor threshold but above sensory threshold. In seven of the nine subjects, stimulation of skin over spastic muscle

VGLUT1 synapses and P-boutons on regenerating motoneurons after nerve crush.

Stretch-sensitive Ia afferent monosynaptic connections with motoneurons form the stretch reflex circuit. After nerve transection, Ia afferent synapses and stretch reflexes are permanently lost, even after regeneration and reinnervation of muscle by motor and sensory afferents is completed in the periphery. This loss greatly affects full recovery of motor function. However, after nerve crush, reflex muscle forces during stretch do recover after muscle reinnervation and reportedly exceed 140% baseline values. This difference might be explained by structural preservation after crush of Ia afferen

Neural and non-neural contributions to ankle spasticity in children with cerebral palsy.

AIM: To assess the neural and non-neural contributions to spasticity in the impaired ankle of children with cerebral palsy (CP). METHOD: Instrumented tapping of the Achilles tendon was done isometrically to minimize non-neural contributions and elicit neural contributions. Robot-controlled ankle stretching was done at various velocities, including slow stretching, with minimized neural contributions. Spasticity was assessed as having neural (phasic and tonic stretch reflex torque, tendon reflex gain, contraction rate, and half relaxation rate) and non-neural origin (elastic stiffness and visc

Conditioned patellar tendon-tap reflexes in patients with ACL reconstruction.

The patellar tendon-tap stretch reflexes were examined in six neurologically healthy young subjects (mean age = 27.1 yrs) who had developed persistent quadriceps strength deficit due to ACL reconstruction. Each subject was tested on two separate days. A specially designed apparatus was used to examine the unilateral and conditioned patellar tendon-tap reflex response utilizing three different conditioning intervals: 25 ms, 75 ms, 150 ms, and a unilateral reflex (control). Peak isometric force and contraction time were measured by using a strain gauge. Also, peak-to-peak EMG was measured by usi

Changes in joint, muscle, and tendon stiffness following repeated hopping exercise.

The purpose of this study was to elucidate the mechanisms of decline in joint stiffness after repeated stretch-shortening cycle exercises according to changes in both muscle-tendon properties and neuromuscular activities. Eleven males performed fatigue task (5 sets of 50 hopping). Ankle joint stiffness and electromyographic activities (mEMG) of plantar flexor and tibial anterior muscles during drop jump were measured before and after fatigue task. Active muscle stiffness with (100 deg·sec-1 ) and without (250 deg·sec-1 ) stretch reflex were calculated according to changes in estimated muscle f
