Central and Peripheral Ocular High-Order Aberrations and Their Relationship with Accommodation and Refractive Error: A Review.

High-order aberrations (HOAs) are optical defects that degrade the image quality. They change with factors such as pupil diameter, age, and accommodation. The changes in optical aberrations during accommodation are mainly due to lens shape and position changes. Primary spherical aberration (Z(4.0)) is closely related to accommodation and some studies suggested that it plays an important role in the control of accommodation. Furthermore, central and peripheral HOAs vary with refractive error and seem to influence eye growth and the onset and progression of myopia. The variations of central and

Ocular Features and Clinical Approach to Cataract and Corneal Refractive Surgery in Patients with Myotonic Dystrophy.

Myotonic dystrophy is the most common inherited muscular dystrophy in adults and presents as two forms, type 1, and type 2. Ocular manifestations such as premature cataract formation, may be the first diagnostic sign or symptom of the disease, offering ophthalmologists a unique diagnostic role. Fuchs' endothelial corneal dystrophy, ptosis and ocular melanoma are other possible findings. Systemic features can help providers better understand the disease and any accommodations to be made in clinical or surgical settings. Some patients with this disease may request evaluation of certain cataract

CHARGE Syndrome Associated with Ocular Abnormalities: A Case Report with Treatment of Amblyopia and Refractive Correction.

CHARGE syndrome is a rare genetic disorder associated with many ocular anomalies including amblyopia, strabismus and high refractive errors. It has been found that the visual acuity of patients with CHARGE syndrome is typically lower than 20/60. After reviewing the literature, there has been a lack of detailed information about the assessments of visual function. Thus, this case report illustrates the strategy plan to treat amblyopia and refractive correction for a young girl with CHARGE syndrome.

Variation of Axial Ocular Dimensions with Age, Sex, Height, BMI-and Their Relation to Refractive Status.

BACKGROUND: Myopia is one of the most common causes of visual impairment worldwide. It is proved in earlier studies that the eye shape is different in myopic and nonmyopic children even at a very young age, with the former manifesting asymmetric axial globe elongation and the latter global expansion but limited information is available regarding hypermetropia. AIM: To find out the variations of axial ocular dimensions in relation to age, sex, height and to demonstrate any possible correlation of body mass index (BMI) in myopic hypermetropic and emmetropic patients. SETTINGS: It is a cross-sec

Some possible longer-term ocular changes following excimer laser refractive surgery.

While the short- and medium-term refractive and acuity results of excimer laser refractive surgery may now be generally satisfactory, the relatively brief history of the procedures involved (around 10 years or less) means that those concerned with eye care must remain vigilant to the possibility of longer-term problems. This paper reviews some relevant studies of potential post-surgical effects, including imperfect corneal healing and recovery of innervation, reduced corneal sensitivity and dry eye problems, changes in corneal rigidity leading to slow refractive change, possibly misleading red

Impact of Preoperative Ocular Hypotony on Refractive Predictability After Phacovitrectomy for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment.

Background/Objectives: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is a vision-threatening condition often treated with combined cataract surgery and vitrectomy, but accurate postoperative refractive prediction may be difficult when ocular anatomy is altered by preoperative hypotony. This retrospective comparative study evaluated the effect of preoperative ocular hypotony on refractive predictability and visual outcomes after combined phacovitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Materials and Methods: Electronic medical records from Nagasaki University Hospital from 2010 to 2022 were reviewed.

Refractive and ocular motor status in autistic adults without learning disabilities: an exploratory study.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Refractive and ocular motor anomalies may be more prevalent among autistic adults without learning disabilities, compared to a non-autistic clinical population. In line with current guidance, optometrists should exclude these anomalies prior to prescribing tinted lenses. BACKGROUND: Autistic adults report various visual experiences with largely negative consequences on daily living. Some of these overlap with symptoms of refractive and ocular motor anomalies. Therefore, this study investigated refractive and ocular motor status, and pattern glare, in autistic adults withou

New loci for refractive errors and ocular biometric parameters in young Chinese Han adults.

Myopia has become a major public health issue with an increasing prevalence. There are still individuals who experience similar environmental risk factors and, yet, remain non-myopic. Thus, there might be genetic factors protecting people from myopia. Considering the opposite ocular characteristics of primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) to myopia and possible common pathway between them, we propose that certain risk genes for PACG might act as a protective factor for myopia. In this study, 2,678 young adults were genotyped for 37 targeted single nucleotide polymorphisms. Compared with emmetr
