Challenges and impossibilities of 'standing alongside' in an intolerable context: Learning from refugees and volunteers in the Calais camp.

This article describes the experience of setting up a psychosocial and therapeutic support project in the French Calais refugee camp, by a group of family therapists and clinical psychologists from the United Kingdom. This came about in response to reports of a humanitarian crisis unfolding on our doorstep, with the British government's lack of support for the growing numbers of refugees gathering along the UK border with France. The project involved working alongside other agencies in the camp to provide psychosocial and resilience-based therapeutic support to unaccompanied young people, wome

Mass vaccination with a two-dose oral cholera vaccine in a long-standing refugee camp, Thailand.

BACKGROUND: During 2005-2012, surveillance in Maela refugee camp, Thailand, identified four cholera outbreaks, with rates up to 10.7 cases per 1000 refugees. In 2013, the Thailand Ministry of Public Health sponsored a two-dose oral cholera vaccine (OCV) campaign for the approximately 46,000 refugees living in Maela. METHODS: We enumerated the target population (refugees living in Maela who are ≥1 year old and not pregnant) in a census three months before the campaign and issued barcoded OCV cards to each individual. We conducted the campaign using a fixed-post strategy during two eight-day ro

Prevalence and determinants of quality of life among Rohingya older adults residing in the refugee camp in Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: Ensuring a good quality of life (QOL) among older refugees is a critical yet underexplored aspect of humanitarian support. Older adults in refugee settings often face unmet basic and healthcare needs, which adversely impact their QOL. This study examines the level of QOL and its determinants among older adults residing in Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in five sub-camps of Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, between November and December 2021. The study participants were older adults (≥ 60 years), and data were coll

Non-Puerperal Adoptive Breastfeeding as Lactational Rescue in the Rohingya Refugee Camp: 2 Case Studies.

INTRODUCTION: Non-puerperal adoptive lactation sometimes requires long preparation and substantial expense for pharmacological intervention to be successful, which are not feasible in refugee camps. Here we report two case studies of non-puerperal adoptive breastfeeding of two infants in the Rohingya Refugee Camp of Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh. MAIN ISSUE: Two non-pregnant, non-breastfeeding caregivers with previous experience of breastfeeding brought two adopted infants-one a 12-day-old female with severe acute malnutrition, and the other a 2-day-old male with normal anthropometric measurements-

Intermittent preventive treatment for malaria among children in a refugee camp in Northern Uganda: lessons learned.

Northern Uganda hosts a large population of refugees from South Sudan, and malaria is one of the major health problems in the area. In 2015, intermittent preventive treatment for malaria (IPTc) was implemented in two refugee camps among children aged 6 months to 14 years. Three distributions of dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DP) were conducted at 8-week intervals. The first dose was directly administered at IPTc distribution sites and the second and third doses were given to caregivers to administer at home. A multi-faceted evaluation was implemented, including coverage surveys, malaria preva

U.S.-incurred costs of wild poliovirus infections in a camp with U.S.-bound refugees--Kenya, 2006.

Routine predeparture vaccinations are not required for U.S.-bound refugees, a policy that potentially leaves U.S. communities vulnerable to importation of vaccine-preventable diseases. During October-December 2006, an outbreak of poliomyelitis associated with wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) occurred in a camp occupied by refugees awaiting resettlement to the United States. This report describes the costs of domestic and international activities borne by U.S. federal and state governments, U.S.-funded organizations, and U.S. voluntary agencies during their response to this outbreak. Requiring pre

Social and geographic inequalities in water, sanitation and hygiene access in 21 refugee camps and settlements in Bangladesh, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, and Zimbabwe.

INTRODUCTION: Many refugees face challenges accessing water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. However, there is limited literature on WASH access for refugee populations, including for menstrual health services. Unmet WASH access needs may therefore be hidden, amplifying morbidity and mortality risks for already vulnerable refugee populations. The aim of this study was therefore to quantitatively analyze WASH access among refugee camps, with a focus on households with women of reproductive age. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study that utilized the Standardized WASH Knowledge, At

A review of water and sanitation provision in refugee camps in association with selected health and nutrition indicators--the need for integrated service provision.

The first global overview of basic water and sanitation indicators in refugee camps is presented (using data from 2003-2006) and compared with selected health and nutrition indicators. This demonstrates that average levels of water and sanitation provision are acceptable at camp level but many refugee operations are suffering from gaps that cross-cut these sectors; e.g. typically poor sanitation provision is corresponding with low per capita availability of water. These findings were confirmed at household level with two household surveys undertaken in African refugee camps; households reporti

Malaria parasite burden and heterogeneity of risk factors among Central African Republic refugees: a cross-sectional study in the Gado-Badzere refugee camp in Eastern Cameroon.

BACKGROUND: Refugees are vulnerable populations especially in malaria endemic areas where the disease claims many lives and constitutes an emerging challenge for humanitarian response. This study assessed how the influx and settlement of Central African Republic (CAR) refugees influences malaria burden in the Gado-Badzere refugee camp, Eastern Cameroon. METHODS: A cross-sectional malariometric survey was conducted between November 2022 and October 2023 in 324 households comprising 1,304 individuals aged 1 month and above. Malaria parasite burden was determined using rapid diagnostic tests (RD

How Health Systems 'Software' Factors Affect Frontline Health Workers' Humanitarian Response Efforts During Infectious Disease Outbreaks in the Rohingya Refugee Camps, Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

Humanitarian settings face a growing healthcare workforce crisis marked by staff shortages, unsafe working conditions, and limited professional development. Despite being critical intermediaries in outbreak responses, demands on health workers come at a substantial cost to their health and wellbeing. Research on health workers responding to the Rohingya refugee crisis in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, is limited. Focussing on health systems "software" (relationships between people and structures), this study explores health workers' interactions with different levels of governance structures, includ

The practice of gender and protection mainstreaming in health response in humanitarian crisis - A case study from the refugee camps in Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh.

BACKGROUND: The health system is required to be safe, equitable, and accessible to all ages, gender, and vulnerable groups, including older persons and persons with disability, and address their specific needs and concerns. However, limited evidence is available on the effectiveness and practicality of gender and protection mainstreaming interventions in health response in humanitarian crises. OBJECTIVE: The overall objective of the research was to explore practices, gaps, and challenges and generate recommendations regarding gender and protection mainstreaming in health response to the Rohin

Perceived Change in Tobacco Use and Its Associated Factors among Older Adults Residing in Rohingya Refugee Camps during the COVID-19 Pandemic in Bangladesh.

This study explored the perceived change in tobacco use during the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated factors among older adults residing in Rohingya refugee camps, also referred to as Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals in Bangladesh. The study followed a cross-sectional design and was conducted in October 2020 among 416 older adults aged 60 years and above. A purposive sampling technique was applied to identify eligible participants, and face-to-face interviews were conducted using a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire to collect the data. Participants were asked if they noted any ch

Exposure to intimate partner violence against women and its association with experiences and perpetration of violence among children and youth in refugee camps in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: A substantial body of research has established a positive association between exposure to intimate partner violence against women (IPVAW) and childhood experiences of violence. However, limited evidence exists on this association in Ethiopia, particularly within humanitarian settings, where children and youth face compounded vulnerabilities. This paper examines the association between witnessing IPVAW during childhood and experiences or perpetration of violence among children and youth aged 13-24 years living in refugee camps in Ethiopia. METHODS: This study draws on data from the

Physical activity levels and associated factors among Rohingya older adults living in the refugee camp in Bangladesh.

Physical inactivity increases with age, yet evidence on physical activity (PA) among older adults affected by forced displacement remains scarce, particularly in refugee camp settings. We aimed to assess PA levels and identify associated factors among Rohingya older adults aged ≥60 years living in refugee camps in Southern Bangladesh. A cross-sectional survey was conducted between May and August 2024. PA was assessed using the Physical Activity Vital Sign (PAVS), alongside socio-demographic, health, and lifestyle variables collected via a pre-tested semi-structured questionnaire. in line with

Water management practices under climate and infrastructure stress in Zaatari Refugee Camp: A gendered qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Climate change-related heatwaves and dust storms increasingly strain water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) systems in displacement settings, yet little is known about how households manage water scarcity during acute climate events. Gendered roles and responsibilities in refugee camps may further influence how water scarcity is managed. This study examines how household water management practices intersect with psychosocial stress during extreme summer conditions in Zaatari Refugee Camp, Jordan. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study using gender-stratified focus group discussi

Associated factors of undernutrition among women of reproductive age living with HIV in Mahama Refugee Camp, Rwanda.

INTRODUCTION: Low dietary diversity in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) usually results from households basing their diets on a small number of food groups beyond their staple foods. Numerous studies have demonstrated that among people in both developed and developing nations, dietary diversity is a reliable indicator of dietary quality. Humanitarian crises over the past few decades have altered the patterns of food consumption in refugee camps, where the prevalence of food insecurity has significantly grown, resulting in undernutrition and chronic diseases. Therefore, our study determ
