BACKGROUND: Semi-domesticated reindeer represent an important livestock industry and livelihood for a proportion of the human population in northern Fennoscandia. Reindeer husbandry is considered an extensive animal husbandry, where the animals are kept mostly on natural pastures, although sometimes kept in fenced areas for shorter periods. These reindeer may harbour a variety of parasites that may affect animal health and production. The relatively limited close contact between herds and owners gives limited opportunities for diagnosis and treatment of diseases in general. Furthermore, the ef

At 340-360 km North of the Arctic Circle in Norway, Hypoderma tarandi (L.) and Cephenemyia trompe (Modeer) females were caught in baited traps from 10 July to 21 August. During three summers, adverse climatic conditions inhibited flight activity of these oestrids on 56-68% of the days. Flies were not caught prior to or after these dates, nor at winds above 8 m/s, temperatures below 10 degrees C, light intensities below 20,000 lux, or during periods of rain or snow. CO2-baited insect flight traps caught significantly more H.tarandi females than non-baited traps. However, neither a white reindee

The hormonal control of the seasonal antler cycle was investigated over 4 years in four adult female Norwegian reindeer, Rangifer tarandus, maintained in captivity at Tromsø, Norway (69 degrees N). The antlers were fully redeveloped in August, cleaned of velvet in September, and were retained in hard antler throughout the winter before being cast in March or April. The cleaning of the antlers occurred at the seasonal onset of ovarian activity and was associated with an increase in the blood plasma concentrations of testosterone, androstenedione, oestradiol and progesterone. Ovariectomy in Octo

Reindeer are the only mammal known to seasonally adapt their eyes to the extremely blue colour of the extended twilight that occupies a large part of the winter 24 h cycle in their Arctic habitat. We describe the atmospheric phenomenon that results in this extreme spectral change in light environment. Reflectance spectroscopy is used to characterize the photonic nanostructure that generates the reflective region of the tapetum lucidum behind the retina. A model is proposed to explain the reversible reformatting of the reflector by seasonal changes in the volume of interstitial fluid within the

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the pharmacokinetics of orally and intravenously (IV) administered meloxicam in semi-domesticated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus).
STUDY DESIGN: A crossover design with an 11 day washout period.
ANIMALS: A total of eight young male reindeer, aged 1.5-2.5 years and weighing 74.3 ± 6.3 kg, mean ± standard deviation.
METHODS: The reindeer were administered meloxicam (0.5 mg kg-1 IV or orally). Blood samples were repeatedly collected from the jugular vein for up to 72 hours post administration. Plasma samples were analysed for meloxicam concentrations with ultrap

Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite found in vertebrates worldwide for which felids serve as definitive hosts. Despite low densities of felids in northern Canada, Inuit people in some regions show unexpectedly high levels of exposure, possibly through handling and consumption of Arctic wildlife. Free-ranging caribou (Rangifer tarandus) are widely harvested for food across the Canadian North, show evidence of seroexposure to T. gondii, and are currently declining in numbers throughout the Arctic. We experimentally infected three captive reindeer (conspecific with caribou) with 1000, 5000 o

A total of 12 reindeer calves (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) were given 200-1,000 infective larvae of Elaphostrongylus rangiferi and autopsied 2 1/2-196 days post inoculation (p.i.). The larvae penetrated venules of the abomasal wall and followed the bloodstream via the liver to the lungs. In the lungs the larvae entered pulmonary venules and spread to all tissues via the general circulation. Many larvae that lodged in arterial vessels outside the spinal cord migrated into the cord along the spinal nerves. Nematodes matured in the central nervous system (CNS), and then migrated to the skeletal m

Captive reindeer in German zoos and wildlife parks live outside their natural geographic range and are exposed to a variety of viral, bacterial and protozoan pathogens, some host-specific and some which they are not exposed to in their native habitat. Reindeer blood samples and ticks collected in 2013 from 123 reindeer at 16 different zoological facilities were available from a previous study. The aims of this study were to assess the serological status of these animals with regards to various microorganisms as well as to test ticks (Ixodes ricinus) and blood samples for the presence of Anapla

The prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms was determined in a population-based sample of 2720 male reindeer herders in Finland by postal questionnaires sent out in 1986 and 1988. Sixty per cent reported back pain, 32% sciatica, 51% neck-shoulder pain, and 49% pain, aching or tenderness in at least one joint during the past 12 months. The neck-shoulder and joint symptoms increased with the annual amount of reindeer herding work done in persons below 50 years of age. The association of back pain with the amount of work was weak, and no consistent association was found for sciatica. Neck-shoulde

294 serum samples from five Norwegian reindeer herds were examined for antibodies against Hypoderma tarandi L. The first and second larval instars of H. tarandi were tested as antigens in immunodiffusion tests, passive haemagglutination and an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The latter technique, using first instar antigens, produced the best results. A significant difference (P less than 0.1%) was observed between the antibody value of naive reindeer bred in France and those from infected Norwegian herds. No correlation was observed between the antibody titre and the number of warb

Undertaken investigations have shown that the antigen prepared from larvae of O. tarandi is diagnostically effective and stricktly specific only to this infection in the reaction of indirect hemagglutination (RIHA). The experiments have proved the possibility of practical use of RIHA as a principal method of early diagnosis of infection of reindeer caused by O. tarandi.

A survey revealed that Onchocerca tarsicola Bain & Schulz-Key, 1974 is a widespread parasite among reindeer in northern Finland. Of 407 animals studied from 12 reindeer herds, 124 (30.5%) were infected. There was a marked difference in infection levels between different reindeer herds and the frequency as well as the intensity of infection was highest in old animals whereas the parasites were rare in yearlings.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid hormones (TH) regulate metabolism and are shaped by environmental factors-ambient temperature in particular. Previous work among indigenous and non-indigenous populations in Russia revealed that there are seasonal shifts in TH dynamics such that total and free triiodothyronine (fT3) and free thyroxine (fT4) increase during winter. Elevated TH levels in these populations were positively correlated with the elevated resting metabolic rate (RMR) commonly seen among indigenous cold climate populations.
METHODS: Here we examined the relationship between TH levels (fT3, fT4, and

Bacteria in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and nontuberculous mycobacteria may affect a variety of animal species under human care and pose public health risks as zoonotic pathogens. A case of sudden onset of lethargy and increased respiratory effort in a 5-y-old, intact female reindeer (Rangifer tarandus) under managed care had progressed to severe dyspnea despite aggressive treatment. The animal was euthanized due to poor prognosis. Postmortem findings included: disseminated miliary nodules in the lungs, pleura, small intestine, liver, and spleen; enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes; dil

OBJECTIVES: In extreme environments, such as the Arctic region, the anthropogenic influence is low and the presence of antimicrobial-resistant bacteria is unexpected. In this study, we screened wild reindeer (Rangifer tarandus platyrhynchus) from the Svalbard High Arctic Archipelago for antimicrobial-resistant Escherichia coli and performed in-depth strain characterisation.
METHODS: Using selective culturing of faecal samples from 55 animals, resistant E. coli were isolated and subjected to minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) determination, conjugation experiments and whole-genome sequenci

This paper inquires whether reindeer herders' traditional knowledge (TK) provides a reservoir of precaution and adaptation possibilities that may be relevant to counteract climate change. As our core example, we used the milking of reindeer-which, in some areas, was practiced up until the 1950s-1960s-and the risk of getting foot rot disease (digital necrobacillosis; slubbo in North Sámi), caused by the bacterium Fusobacterium necrophorum. Via wounds or scratches, the bacterium creates an infection that makes the infected limb swell and, eventually, necrotize. The disease is often mortal in its

From a herd of captive reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) consisting of two males and seven females with five calves, three calves were diagnosed on post mortem examination with a Babesia capreoli infection. The diagnosis was indicated by PCR and when the other reindeer were examined two adult females and a one-year-old male were Babesia-positive. Molecular characterization of the 18S rDNA of the parasite showed complete identity with known B. capreoli sequences. Ixodes ricinus has been demonstrated to be a competent vector for B. capreoli from infected roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), the n

Due to the hard environmental and climatic situation in late winter 1999, a herd of about 200 free-ranging, semi-domesticated reindeer was gathered in a paddock in northern Norway for emergency feeding. About the same number of reindeer was not corralled but supplementary fed on their winter pastures. The fodder was of relatively good quality but very dusty and fed in a very dry environment. Six weeks later, an outbreak of eye-infection was diagnosed in one third of the corralled reindeer; mild symptoms were observed in most of them, but 11 animals showed severe signs of disease. No signs of d
