Living with Limits: A Phenomenological Study on the Experience of Intradialytic Weight Control in Hemodialysis.

This phenomenological study explored the daily life experiences of 18 hemodialysis patients managing fluid restrictions, recruited from a university hospital in Turkey. Data were collected through semistructured interviews and analyzed using Colaizzi's phenomenological method supported by MAXQDA software. Two themes emerged: Living Amidst Constraints (environmental, psychological, physical, and professional challenges) and Finding Strength (behavioral adaptations, resilience, social support, and educational and technological tools). These findings suggest that knowledge alone is insufficient t

Stimulus control and resistance to extinction in attention-maintained SIB.

A functional analysis of the self-injurious behavior (SIB) of a young man diagnosed with severe mental retardation demonstrated that SIB was sensitive to social attention as reinforcement. In addition, lower but consistent rates of SIB occurred in sessions where a person was present (Demand and Toy Play), and a gradual decrease in SIB was observed across sessions where a person was not present (Alone). Evaluation of the within-session trends of SIB during the functional analysis demonstrated that SIB maintained throughout each Social Attention session and declined within and across Alone sessi

Interactions between peers with and without severe handicaps: dynamics of teacher intervention.

The impact of teachers' verbal interventions upon the dyadic social interactions between 40 elementary school children with severe mental retardation and their regular-education peers was investigated. All interactions occurred in the context of a structured program designed to facilitate social interactions. Half of the dyads were further instructed in specific cooperative play behavior. Students' and teachers' behaviors were coded. Results showed that the intervention initially positively affected various social play behavior; however, these effects diminished or reversed themselves as the i

Social touch and human development.

Social touch is a powerful force in human development, shaping social reward, attachment, cognitive, communication, and emotional regulation from infancy and throughout life. In this review, we consider the question of how social touch is defined from both bottom-up and top-down perspectives. In the former category, there is a clear role for the C-touch (CT) system, which constitutes a unique submodality that mediates affective touch and contrasts with discriminative touch. Top-down factors such as culture, personal relationships, setting, gender, and other contextual influences are also impor

A neuro-computational social learning framework to facilitate transdiagnostic classification and treatment across psychiatric disorders.

Social deficits are among the core and most striking psychiatric symptoms, present in most psychiatric disorders. Here, we introduce a novel social learning framework, which consists of neuro-computational models that combine reinforcement learning with various types of social knowledge structures. We outline how this social learning framework can help specify and quantify social psychopathology across disorders and provide an overview of the brain regions that may be involved in this type of social learning. We highlight how this framework can specify commonalities and differences in the soci

Behavior modification of abnormal gait and chronic pain secondary to somatization disorder.

An interdisciplinary team, which included a physiatrist, psychologist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, social worker, and nursing staff, undertook the treatment of a 33-year-old woman with a 16-year history of gait problems and multiple somatic complaints. Previously, she had been followed by a number of physicians and had undergone both invasive and noninvasive diagnostic procedures as well as several surgical procedures. After limited response to such treatment, she was referred to the outpatient PM&R clinic for evaluation. Physical and psychologic study led to a primary diagnosi

Demarcation of anxiety and fear: Evidence from behavioral genetics.

Anxiety and fear are emotions often intertwined in response to aversive stimuli, complicating efforts to differentiate them and understand their distinct consequences. This study explores the common genetic and environmental factors contributing to the co-occurrence of anxiety disorders and dimensions of the revised Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (rRST). A sample of 356 monozygotic (22.5 % males; M = 25.73, SD = 8.3) and 386 dizygotic (33.9 % males; M = 24.21, SD = 8.33) twins from the Serbian Twin Advanced Registry was analyzed. A Computational Account of Optimizing Social Predictions Reveals That Adolescents Are Conservative Learners in Social Contexts.

As adolescents transition to the complex world of adults, optimizing predictions about others' preferences becomes vital for successful social interactions. Mounting evidence suggests that these social learning processes are affected by ongoing brain development across adolescence. A mechanistic understanding of how adolescents optimize social predictions and how these learning strategies are implemented in the brain is lacking. To fill this gap, we combined computational modeling with functional neuroimaging. In a novel social learning task, male and female human adolescents and adults predic

The buddy system: a method for generalized reduction of inappropriate interpersonal behaviour of retarded-psychiatric patients.

Previous research has suggested a strategy for training social skills in chronic retarded-psychotic patients, but has not demonstrated extensive generalization or maintenance of gains. This study varied the standard training procedure (e.g. Bellack et al., 1976) in an attempt to improve generalization and maintenance. First, training involved instructions, modelling, role-playing, and feedback with daily problem situations rather than preselected, pre-written scenes. Second, each of the two patients treated served as a partner for the other; each patient monitored the other's behaviour and pro

Digital technologies-enhanced older adults health management: developing a five-dimensional extension of social learning theory for community settings.

BACKGROUND: Against intensifying global aging, digital technologies are pivotal in supporting older adults' health management. However, older adults often encounter significant barriers within social learning environments. Bandura's Social Learning Theory (SLT) offers a valuable framework for enhancing older adults' capacity to utilize digital technologies in health management within social settings. This study extends SLT by developing a novel community-based perspective, aligning it more closely with the social learning needs of older adults in digital health management. This study also resp

Social feedback enhances learning in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a rare genetic condition characterized by high social interest and approach motivation as well as intellectual disability and anxiety. Despite the fact that social stimuli are believed to have an increased intrinsic reward value in WS, it is not known whether this translates to learning and decision making. Genes homozygously deleted in WS are linked to sociability in the general population, making it a potential model condition for understanding the social brain. Probabilistic reinforcement learning was studied with either social or non-social rewards for correct cho

Abnormal decision-making in generalized anxiety disorder: Aversion of risk or stimulus-reinforcement impairment?

There is preliminary data indicating that patients with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) show impairment on decision-making tasks requiring the appropriate representation of reinforcement value. The current study aimed to extend this literature using the passive avoidance (PA) learning task, where the participant has to learn to respond to stimuli that engender reward and avoid responding to stimuli that engender punishment. Six stimuli engendering reward and six engendering punishment are presented once per block for 10 blocks of trials. Thirty-nine medication-free patients with GAD and 29

Addiction beyond pharmacological effects: The role of environment complexity and bounded rationality.

Several decision-making vulnerabilities have been identified as underlying causes for addictive behaviours, or the repeated execution of stereotyped actions despite their adverse consequences. These vulnerabilities are mostly associated with brain alterations caused by the consumption of substances of abuse. However, addiction can also happen in the absence of a pharmacological component, such as seen in pathological gambling and videogaming. We use a new reinforcement learning model to highlight a previously neglected vulnerability that we suggest interacts with those already identified, whil

Social versus dietary control of ruminating by mentally retarded persons.

The effects of social and nonsocial environments on the maintenance of ruminating were compared. There was no decrease in ruminating in the nonsocial condition for the 4 mentally retarded subjects tested. In addition, results of Rast, Johnston, Drum, and Conrin (1981) and Rast, Johnston, and Drum (1984), who manipulated the quantity of food available to 2 subjects, were replicated. Satiation quantities of starches produced immediate and large decreases in the frequency of ruminating compared to ruminating under standard meal sizes. Parametric decreases in food intake by one subject resulted in

Short-term effect of American summer treatment program for Japanese children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

We reported the results of the 3-week summer treatment program (STP) for children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in 2006. The STP was based on methods established by Professor Pelham in Buffalo, NY and has been used in a number of studies and at a number of sites in the U.S. This is the first STP outside North America. Thirty-six children age 6-12 years with ADHD participated. The collection of evidence-based behavioral modification techniques that comprises the STP's behavioral program (e.g., point system, daily report card, positive reinforcement, time out) was used. Mo

A comparison of two treatments for depression: the antidepressive program vs. traditional therapy.

This study compared a traditional therapy for depression with Antidepressive therapy, a regime of meaningless, boring work designed to provoke the patient to an assertive expression of anger. The Ss were 32 neurotic and 24 psychotic patients at the Tuscaloosa, Alabama Veterans Administration Hospital. Improvement was measured by scores on the Purpose-In-Life Test (PIL) and the Self-Rating Depression Scale. All patient groups improved significantly within a 1-week period. Neurotics treated on the Antidepressive program improved significantly more than neurotics treated on the Traditional progra

MEG signatures of long-term effects of agreement and disagreement with the majority.

People often change their beliefs by succumbing to an opinion of others. Such changes are often referred to as effects of social influence. While some previous studies have focused on the reinforcement learning mechanisms of social influence or on its internalization, others have reported evidence of changes in sensory processing evoked by social influence of peer groups. In this study, we used magnetoencephalographic (MEG) source imaging to further investigate the long-term effects of agreement and disagreement with the peer group. The study was composed of two sessions. During the first sess

Children with Autism show Atypical Preference for Non-social Stimuli.

The present investigation describes three studies testing the hypothesis that children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) show an atypical preference for non-social stimuli. Preference for non-social and social stimuli was assessed using applications on a portable tablet computer. Twenty-eight children with ASD were matched on developmental age with the chronological age of 41 typically developing (TD) children. The non-social stimuli consisted of six different films of abstract moving geometric patterns. Social stimuli were six different films of the face of young adults (Study 1 and 3) or s

Social skills training for depressed, visually impaired older adults. A treatment manual.

Late-onset visual impairment due to cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy afflicts approximately 10% of people older than 65, and often results in depression and social dysfunction. Whereas the majority of sighted older adults are active participants in their community, individuals suffering from progressively worsening vision experience heightened levels of isolation and reduced social support, and participate in fewer reinforcing recreational activities. This article describes our social skills training package for the treatment of depressed, visually impaired, o

Contingency management for monosubstance use disorders: Systematic review and assessment of predicted versus obtained effects.

Contingency management (CM) is notably successful as a substance use disorder treatment and is most effective when targeting monosubstance use. Evidence suggests the effects of CM exceed predictions based on the value of the incentives delivered for monosubstance abstinence. In this systematic review, we examine common variations of CM interventions applied to a single substance to determine what factors may contribute to the larger effect. Our results show that CM produced moderate to large effect sizes when single drugs were targeted, with stable effects over time. We also found that interve
