Effects of exposure to 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 126) throughout gestation and lactation on behavior (concurrent random interval-random interval and progressive ratio performance) in rats.

There is evidence that polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners have differential effects on endpoints of neurotoxicity depending on their chemical structure: specifically, that ortho-substituted congeners are neurotoxic while coplanar (dioxin-like) congeners are relatively inactive in producing neurotoxic effects. This study extends research on the effects of developmental exposure to the coplanar congener 3,3',4,4',5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 126) in Long-Evans rats. Dams were dosed with 0, 0.25, or 1 microg/kg/day Monday to Friday beginning 5 weeks before and continuing through gestation and

Performance and feedback function on variable differential reinforcement of low rates: Tempus urgit vel abundat?

The variable-differential-reinforcement-of-low-rates (VDRL) schedule introduces temporal uncertainty by requiring organisms to withhold responding for variable intervals, yet its effects on behavior remain largely unexplored. The present study examined rat performance under a 10-s VDRL schedule, focusing on the temporal organization of responding. Ten rats were exposed to VDRL after baseline training, and performance was analyzed using survival analysis of interresponse times. Results showed a consistent three-stage structure across subjects, comprising within-bout responding, an intermediate

Weaver mutant mice exhibit long-term learning deficits under several measures of instrumental behavior.

Homozygous weaver mutant mice (wv/wv) exhibit symptoms that parallel Parkinson's disease, including motor deficits and the destruction of dopaminergic neurons as well as degeneration in the cerebellum and hippocampus. To develop a more complete behavioral profile of these organisms, groups of wv/wv, wv/+ mice and C57BL/6 mice were observed on a within-subjects basis under a fixed-interval schedule of reinforcement, a differential-reinforcement-of-low-rate-of-responding schedule, and a discrimination task in which a saccharin solution and tap water were concurrently available from two food cups

Relative effects of four resurgence-mitigation strategies informed by behavioral momentum theory.

Behavioral momentum theory (BMT) posits that particular independent variables may be adjusted during routine differential-reinforcement treatments (e.g., functional communication training) to reduce resurgence of severe destructive behavior. Across four consecutive studies using similar preparations and participants, our research group investigated four BMT-informed mitigation strategies: (a) lean reinforcement rates for target behavior during baseline, (b) lean reinforcement rates for alternative behavior during treatment, (c) a longer treatment duration, and (d) a combined approach including

Effects and side effects of DRO as treatment for self-injurious behavior.

A three-part controlled case study is presented in which severe and longstanding self-injurious behavior exhibited by a 9-year-old-boy was treated successfully with differential reinforcement of other behavior. In Phase 1, an experimental analysis demonstrated that the boy's scratching was not maintained by environmental contingencies; instead, it appeared that the self-injurious behavior was a stereotypic (automatically reinforced) response. In Phase 2, the effects of an escalating differential-reinforcement-of-other-behavior schedule mediated through token reinforcement (pennies) were evalua

High-dose adolescent nicotine exposure permits spontaneous nicotine self-administration in adult male rats.

INTRODUCTION: While cigarette smoking rates have been steadily decreasing over the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in nicotine use via e-cigarettes, especially during adolescence. Adolescent e-cigarette use is associated with a greater risk of future cigarette smoking, and increased rates of cigarette smoking in individuals who may have otherwise never tried cigarettes. In humans and rodents, early initiation of nicotine use has been associated with greater consumption, dependence, and persistent nicotine use. The present study sought to investigate the long-lasting effect of d

Responding maintained by intermittent reinforcement: implications for the use of extinction with problem behavior in clinical settings.

Results of basic research have demonstrated that behavior maintained on an intermittent schedule of reinforcement (INT) will be extinguished more slowly than behavior maintained on a continuous schedule (CRF). Although these findings suggest that problem behaviors may be difficult to treat with extinction if they have been maintained on INT rather than on CRF schedules, few applied studies have examined this phenomenon with human behavior in clinical settings. The purpose of this study was to determine whether problem behavior maintained on CRF schedules would be extinguished more rapidly than

The effects of reinforcement frequency and response requirements on the maintenance of behavior.

Six rats responded under fixed-interval and tandem fixed-interval fixed-ratio schedules of food reinforcement. Basic fixed-interval schedules alternated over experimental conditions with tandem fixed-interval fixed-ratio schedules with the same fixed-interval value. Fixed-interval length was varied within subjects over pairs of experimental conditions; the ratio requirement of the tandem schedules was varied across subjects. For both subjects with a ratio requirement of 10, overall response rates and running response rates typically were higher under the tandem schedules than under the corresp

Comparison of DRO and DRI on rate of suppression of self-injurious behavior.

Two procedures were used to compare the effects of differential reinforcement of other behavior (DRO) and differential reinforcement of incompatible behavior (DRI) on self-injurious behavior (SIB) of three profoundly retarded head-bangers in a multiple-schedule within-subjects design. We found that rewarding a response specifically incompatible with SIB suppressed it more rapidly than applying DRO without specifying an alternative response. The relationship of collateral behaviors to SIB were dependent upon the repertoires of the individual clients.

Diurnal pituitary-adrenal activity during schedule-induced polydipsia of water and ethanol in cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis).

RATIONALE: Intermittent delivery of an important commodity (e.g., food pellets) generates excessive behaviors as an adjunct to the schedule of reinforcement (adjunctive behaviors) that are hypothesized to be due to conflict between engaging and escaping a situation where reinforcement is delivered, but at suboptimal rates. OBJECTIVES: This study characterized the endocrine correlates during schedule-induced polydipsia of water and ethanol using a longitudinal approach in non-human primates. METHODS: Plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and cortisol were measured in samples from awake cy

Schedule-induced polydipsia: are response-dependent schedules a limiting condition?

The collateral water intake of albino rats was measured when the inter-pellet intervals in fixed-ratio and fixed-time schedules were equated. Fixed-ratio and fixed-time inter-pellet intervals were equated by dividing the average fixed-ratio session time of each subject by 150 (food pellets). The average inter-pellet interval obtained then defined the subsequent fixed-time schedule for each individual subject. Shifts to fixed-time schedules followed the completion of each fixed-ratio 20, 40, and 80 schedule. This procedure permitted an assessment of the extent to which excessive collateral drin

Altered reinforcement mechanisms in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The present study tested eight boys with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 12 normal boys (comparison group), aged 7-12 years, to investigate the hypothesis that ADHD is associated with a steeper and shorter delay-of-reinforcement gradient than is normal. A two-component schedule of reinforcement was used to deliver trinkets or coins as reinforcers in a game-like test. One component was marked by a signal. During this period reinforcers (coins or trinkets) were delivered every 30 s. This component is called a 30-s fixed interval (FI) schedule of reinforcement and measures cha

Effects of carbon disulfide and FLA-63 on operant behavior in pigeons.

Carbon disulfide (CS2) and FLA-63 [bis(4-methyl-1-homopiperazinylthiocarbonyl)disulfide] were studied in pigeons working on a differential-reinforcement-of low-rates or a multiple fixed-interval fixed-ratio schedule of food reinforcement. Response rate on both schedules decreased after 8-hour exposures to CS2 (2 mg/1) of administration of FLA-63 (40 and 80 mg/kg). The effects of two successive 8-hour exposures to CS2 were cumulative and ten successive 4-hour exposures produced changes in differential-reinforcement-of-low-rates performance resembling those following acute exposure. [Behavioral pharmacological properties of propiverine hydrochloride (P-4) in mice and rats].

Since propiverine hydrochloride (P-4), an anti-pollakiuria drug, increased the spontaneous motor activity of mice in general pharmacological experiments, behavioral pharmacological effects of P-4 were further studied by experiments for spontaneous motor activity, convulsion-inducing effect, and differential reinforcement of low rate (DRL) schedule in mice and rats. A high dose of P-4 (100 mg/kg, p.o.) increased slightly but significantly the spontaneous motor activity level in rats. P-4 (10, 20, and 50 mg/kg, p.o. for one week) did not affect the activity level in mice, whereas methamphetamine

Hyperactivity and impulsiveness in rats fed diets supplemented with either Aroclor 1248 or PCB-contaminated St. Lawrence river fish.

We examined whether exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) around puberty would produce hyperactivity and impulsiveness in adult Sprague-Dawley rats. Randomly assigned groups consumed food containing environmental concentrations of Aroclor 1248, PCB-contaminated St. Lawrence River carp, or corn oil (control). All received operant training to a final multiple (mult) 120-s, fixed interval (FI), 5-min extinction (EXT) schedule. Pressing rates of both exposed groups for drops of water averaged more than 1.5 times that of controls, especially toward the end of the 120-s interval. This overact

Evaluating effects of synchronous music reinforcement on increasing treadmill walking speed in a stepwise fashion.

This study evaluated the effects of synchronous music reinforcement on walking speed in a laboratory-based treadmill preparation. Thirty undergraduate students walked on a nonmotorized treadmill for a 15-min session consisting of an initial continuous music component, three synchronous reinforcement components, and a final continuous music component. During the initial continuous music component (CM 1), participants received continuous access to self-selected music, and their mean speed was used to set individualized criteria for the synchronous components. In the synchronous components, music

Sources of Environmental Reinforcement and Engagement in Health Risk Behaviors Among a General Population Sample of US Adults.

Research supports the premise that greater substance use is associated with fewer sources of environmental reinforcement. However, it remains unclear whether types of environmental reinforcement (e.g., social or work) may differentially influence use. This study tested the association between types of environmental reinforcement and engagement in multiple health risk behaviors (alcohol use, binge eating, and nicotine use). Cross-sectional data were collected from a general population sample of US adults (N = 596). The Pleasant Events Schedule (PES) was used to measure sources of reinforcement.

Response inhibition is impaired by developmental methylmercury exposure: acquisition of low-rate lever-pressing.

Developmental methylmercury (MeHg) exposure produces response perseveration on discrimination reversal procedures, disrupts sensitivity to reinforcement, and enhances sensitivity to dopamine agonists - a profile suggesting a deficit in behavioral inhibition. To examine inhibition, we examined MeHg's effects on the acquisition and persistence of low-rate lever-pressing following a history of high-rate responding. Additionally, we examined whether chronic exposure to selenium protects against MeHg's developmental neurotoxicity. Female rats were exposed in utero via maternal exposure to drinking

Behavioral and neurochemical effects of cocaine and diphenhydramine combinations in rhesus monkeys.

RATIONALE: Diphenhydramine (DPH) is an over-the-counter medication used in the treatment of allergic symptoms. While DPH abuse is infrequent, recent preclinical evidence suggests that DPH and cocaine combinations may have enhanced reinforcing properties. OBJECTIVE: The aims were to assess the reinforcing effectiveness of cocaine and DPH alone or in combination under a second-order schedule of reinforcement and to examine the neurochemical basis of this interaction using in vivo microdialysis in awake rhesus monkeys. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cocaine (0.03-0.3 mg/kg per injection), DPH (0.3-3.0
