Previous research suggests that sending non-participants a reminder letter, 1 year after their initial invitation, can improve coverage for bowel scope screening (BSS), also known as flexible sigmoidoscopy screening. We hypothesised that adding a general practitioner's (GPs) endorsement to the reminder letter could improve coverage even further. We conducted a randomised controlled trial in North West London, UK. Participants were screening-eligible men and women who had not responded to their initial BSS invitation at least 12 months prior to the trial period. Eligible adults were randomised

OBJECTIVE: It is key for women to return to screening at regular intervals to ensure the effectiveness of early detection and protective effects of the Pap test. A correspondence program was initiated in Ontario in 2013 to implement a recall and reminder letter sent to women 2.9 years from their prior normal Pap test. This study sought to evaluate the impact of the recall letter and reminder on retention rates for cervical screening.
METHODS: A cohort study with a historical control was carried out with an exposed group, defined as women receiving a letter for recall in the week of November 2

We compared the effectiveness of physician-initiated daily verbal reminders to primary care providers with nurse-initiated daily verbal reminders in decreasing the duration of inappropriate indwelling urinary catheter use in hospitalized patients. Catheter use duration was significantly decreased in the physician-initiated intervention group compared with the nurse-initiated intervention group (0.5 ± 0.8 vs 1.7 ± 2.7 days, respectively; P = .03).

BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) are costly, common and often preventable by reducing unnecessary urinary catheter (UC) use.
METHODS: To summarise interventions to reduce UC use and CAUTIs, we updated a prior systematic review (through October 2012), and a meta-analysis regarding interventions prompting UC removal by reminders or stop orders. A narrative review summarises other CAUTI prevention strategies including aseptic insertion, catheter maintenance, antimicrobial UCs, and bladder bundle implementation.
RESULTS: 30 studies were identified and summarised w

This article reports the results of two case studies. Two middle school-aged participants with high-functioning autism spectrum disorders were taught to self-monitor behaviors impacting their social acceptance by peers in their general education settings: oral self-stimulatory behaviors and conversation skills. Results indicate that the intervention was effective to some degree with both participants. As a result of the self-monitoring intervention, one participant decreased self-stimulatory behaviors; however, his data were highly variable throughout the study though lower on average during i

BACKGROUND: Accurate measurement of lifestyle factors is central to understanding how daily behaviors act as risk factors or protective buffers to noncommunicable diseases. While wearable devices enable passive monitoring of physical activity or sleep, nutritional intake still depends on active participant input, such as manual dietary logs or image-based recordings. Adherence to such logging tasks often declines rapidly, impacting data completeness and clinical utility. Theory-based reminders drawing on loss-framing or logging consistency feedback (ie, tracking streaks) can improve adherence

BACKGROUND: In 2018, prostate cancer screening with prostate specific antigen (PSA) received a "C" recommendation from the US Preventive Services Task Force for men aged 55 to 69 years. In January 2023, our health system implemented a point-of-care electronic reminder for primary care clinicians to discuss PSA screening for men aged 55 to 69.
METHODS: We assessed the impact of reminder implementation on monthly rates of PSA ordering from January 1, 2022 to July 31, 2024 by performing interrupted time series analyses for men aged 55 to 69 years (for whom the reminder was implemented) and men a

BACKGROUND: The vast amounts of clinical data collected in electronic health records (EHR) is analogous to the data explosion from the "-omics" revolution. In the EHR clinicians often maintain patient-specific problem summary lists which are used to provide a concise overview of significant medical diagnoses. We hypothesized that by tapping into the collective wisdom generated by hundreds of physicians entering problems into the EHR we could detect significant associations among diagnoses that are not described in the literature.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We employed an analytic approac

Cardiac disease is one of the commonest causes of indirect maternal deaths globally. This brief report is a reminder that isolated maternal tachycardia at rest is a clinical alert and warrants a detailed history in relation to cardiac disorders, thorough clinical examination of all organ systems, relevant investigations such as imaging, and expert advice to avoid serious adverse events. We reflect on a belatedly investigated persistent maternal tachycardia resulting in a fatal postpartum collapse due to mitral stenosis. The lost window of opportunity for appropriate investigation and managemen

BACKGROUND: Reminders via digital technology offer a novel and efficient means to address medication forgetfulness, as they are easily accessible and user-friendly for patients. In particular mobile text message reminders are more suitable for chronic patients, as they require few technical skills, can operate without internet connectivity, and are less expensive than other technologies. This study aimed to assess the intention to use mobile text message reminders for medication adherence among hypertensive patients at the Gondar City health facilities.
METHODS: A facility-based cross-section

To determine the impact of information technology on embedding the latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) screening guidelines in an electronic medical record (EMR) in a large health care system. The long-term goal of the study is to test clinician adherence to LTBI screening guidelines using an EMR system. However, preliminary results are presented on the potential impact on providers on implementing the alerts on targeted high-risk patients.

BACKGROUND: Preventive care is an important role for general practitioners, yet opportunities for prevention are often missed.
METHOD: We provided an automatic electronic record preventive care reminder system for 12 preventive care activities for one 10 doctor practice. All patients who attended were randomised by the terminal digit of their record number.
RESULTS: The control uptake of opportunistic prevention was low; ranging from 1.5% (tetanus immunisation) to 27% (influenza immunisation). The reminders increased this by significant but small amounts for four out of 12 activities (immuni

A comparative descriptive study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of text messages with pictures compared with plain text messages or verbal reminders in improving measles, mumps, and rubella immunization compliance in the rural areas of the Philippines. We found that text messaging with or without pictures is a feasible and useful tool in measles, mumps, rubella immunization compliance for childhood immunization. Texting with pictures (n = 23), however, was no more effective than plain text messaging (n = 19) or verbal reminder (n = 17) in improving measles, mumps, and rubella immu

BACKGROUND: Non-compliance is a significant problem among people with serious mental disorders, presenting a challenge for mental health professionals. Prompts such as telephone calls, visits, and a posted referral letter to patients are currently used to encourage patient attendance at clinics and/or compliance with medication. More recently, the use of information and communication technology (ICT)-based prompting methods have increased. Methods include mobile text message (SMS - short message service), e-mail or use of any other electronic device with the stated purpose of encouraging compl
