Reoperation in patients with biliary atresia.

Twenty-seven reoperations were done on 23 patients among 100 infants with biliary atresia who have been treated at Tohoku University Hospital between 1971 and 1981. Nineteen patients had a single reoperation and 4 patients had 2 reoperations. We present the results and the role of reoperation in biliary atresia patients in our institution. Excellent bile drainage after reoperation was obtained in 13 of 15 patients with good bile flow after the initial operation. On the contrary, good bile drainage was not obtained by reoperation in 8 of 12 cases without active bile flow after the initial opera

[Reoperation in rectal cancer (author's transl)].

Carcinoma of the rectum is reported to have a local recurrence rate of 3-48 percent. In 80 percent of cases, recurrence appears within 2 years after the first operation. The possible causes of its occurrence and its localization are discussed. Early diagnosis is important. Follow-up examinations are therefore necessary every 3 months in the first 2 years. Curative secondary operations are rare. In pelvic, perineal, and genital recurrence, radiation therapy is usually considered to be the treatment of choice.

Coronary reoperations: indications, techniques and operative results. Retrospective study of 240 coronary reoperations.

BACKGROUND: We review twelve-year experience with coronary reoperations so as to better identify indications, techniques and results. METHODS: Between January 1986 and March 1998, 240 coronary reoperations (228 redux, 12 tridux) were performed. There were 223 male and 17 female patients, with a mean age of 63.6+/-7.9 years at the time of reoperation. Mean time interval between operations was 10+/-4.8 years. Symptomatology consisted of: stable recurrent angina (40%), unstable (57%), or congestive heart failure (3%). Pathological feature of the primary grafts was implicated in 95% of cases and

[Coronary reoperation: indications, methods and immediate postoperative prognosis. Retrospective study of 184 reoperations].

The authors performed 184 coronary reoperations (172 redux, 12 tridux) between January 1986 and december 1995 in 177 patients (165 men, 12 women) with an average age at surgery of 62.9 +/- 7.6 years. The average interval between the surgical procedures was 9.5 +/- 4.5 years. The symptoms were recurrent angina, stable in 44%, unstable in 51%, and cardiac failure, 7%. Graft dysfunction was the cause in 94.5% of cases with progression of atheroma of the native coronary vessels in only 5.6% of cases. At reoperation 389 bypass procedures were performed (venous 39.5%, arterial 60.5%) (2.1 +/- 0.6 pe

Five-year Reoperation Rates and Causes for Reoperations Following Lumbar Microendoscopic Discectomy and Decompression.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of prospectively collected outcome data. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate reoperation cases and determine whether or not the experience period of a single surgeon was associated with the causes of reoperations following lumbar microendoscopic discectomy for disc herniation (MEDH) and microendoscopic decompression for spinal stenosis (MEDS). SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There have been few studies that investigated reoperation cases following MEDH and MEDS. METHODS: Between June 2005 (first experience of MEDH) and September 2013, the same s

Association between postoperative complications and reoperation for patients undergoing geriatric surgery and the effect of reoperation on mortality.

Elderly patients have greater risk for postoperative adverse events (PAEs). The study examines the rates of reoperation, the association between PAEs and reoperation, and the effect of reoperation on mortality for patients 65 years of age or older undergoing colorectal resections (CRRs), pancreatic resections (PRs), and lower extremity bypass (LEB) in 2010 American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program. The models evaluating associations between reoperation and preoperative factors, PAEs, and mortality were developed using multiple logistic regression. The reoperati

Reoperative robotic pyeloplasty in children.

INTRODUCTION: Reoperative pyeloplasty for recurrent ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) can be technically challenging and is associated with greater morbidity and lower success rates than an initial repair. Robotic-assisted laparoscopic pyeloplasty (RALP) previously has been demonstrated to be a safe and effective approach for management of recurrent UPJO; however, the length of follow-up has been limited. The objective of this study was to confirm the safety and efficacy of RALP for UPJO in children following failed previous pyeloplasty and provide clinical benchmarks for intermediate

Reoperative urethroplasty. A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Limited articles are published on reoperative urethroplasty outcomes. We sought to perform a systematic review of re-operative urethroplasty articles over the past fifteen years. METHODS: A systematic review was performed on PubMed using the search terms "Urethra" AND "Surgical Procedures, Operative" OR "Urethroplasty". RESULTS: Five articles out of 3,541 articles identified between 1998 and 2012 specifically addressed re-operative urethroplasty patients. A total of 212 patients were included in these five studies. Re-operative urethroplasty success rates ranged from 35% to 84%.

Reoperative temporomandibular joint surgery.

TMJ surgeries are not always successful. Many potential pitfalls can occur during any phase of the treatment and can lead to complications, less than desirable results, and short- or long-term failures. Unsatisfactory results can occur for multiple reasons, including misdiagnosis of the original pathologic condition, incorrect selection of surgical technique, technical failures, complications, systemic disease, and unrealistic expectations. This article focuses on the reoperation of the TMJ primarily in cases of internal derangement and discusses TMJ arthrocentesis, arthroscopy, modified condy

Lung volume reduction reoperations.

BACKGROUND: Optimal management of emphysematous patients who have lost the benefits achieved after lung volume reduction surgery is a clinical dilemma. We have hypothesized that in stringently selected instances, lung volume reduction reoperations might be considered as a salvage surgical treatment. We sought to analyze the results of a series of patients undergoing lung volume reduction reoperations after successful bilateral lung volume reduction surgery. METHODS: Between January 2000 and April 2006, 17 patients (mean age, 66 +/- 3 years) with radiologic evidence of distinct regional lung h

[Reoperations in gastroesophageal reflux disease].

PURPOSE: The purpose was to determinate the indications in which the failure of the surgical treatment of the gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is more frequent and to analyze the results of the reinterventions. PATIENTS AND METHOD: We made a restrospective review of the patients who underwent reoperation at our Institution during 1992-2006. RESULTS: 19 of 252 Nissen underwent reoperation. In one case was the fourth fundoplication, in another was the third and the second in the rest of them. The reflux was confirmed by upper gastrointestinal contrast study, endoscopy, pH monitoring and,

Is it worth reoperating on macular holes?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the visual outcome after a second surgical attempt to close idiopathic full-thickness macular holes (FTMH) in patients who underwent unsuccessful primary surgery and in patients with reopened FTMHs. DESIGN: Retrospective single-center case series. PARTICIPANTS: Five hundred thirty-two patients underwent surgery for FTMH in St. Paul's Eye Unit, Liverpool, United Kingdom, between March, 1995, and March, 2005. Fifty-one patients had unclosed FTMHs (unclosed group) and 21 patients had reopened FTMHs after initially successful surgery (reopened group). METHODS: All patient

Reoperative surgery for Hirschsprung's disease.

Most patients who undergo a pull-through procedure for Hirschsprung's disease typically do well. A small number of patients have persistent stooling problems, often manifesting with either constipation or recurrent enterocolitis. A group of these patients will not respond to conservative medical management and may need to undergo another operative procedure. Reoperative surgery for Hirschsprung's disease typically falls into 2 categories, those who require a myectomy and those who need a redo pull-through. This article reviews the workup, indications, and techniques for these procedures and di

Laparoscopic reoperative antireflux surgery.

BACKGROUND: Antireflux operations for gastroesophageal reflux disease whether performed open or laparoscopically can fail and may require reoperation to control new, recurrent symptoms or operation-related complications. We report our experience with the laparoscopic reoperation for failed antireflux procedures. METHODS: Between 1995 and 2000, 37 patients underwent laparoscopic reoperative antireflux procedures. The mean age and weight were 52 years and 181.5 pounds. The main presenting symptoms were heartburn (n = 18), respiratory reflux (n = 4), chest pain (n = 3), regurgitation (n = 1), an

Reoperative laparoscopic antireflux surgery.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic antireflux surgery (LAP) is becoming increasingly used for the surgical treatment of medical recalcitrant gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). We sought to determine the utility of remedial LAP approaches to antireflux surgery. METHODS: From March 1996 to December 1998, 15 patients underwent remedial LAP to manage medically recalcitrant recurrent GERD after LAP (n = 8) or open antireflux procedure (n = 1) and/or troublesome postfundoplication complications (dysphagia 6, gas bloat 4). The remedial LAP surgery consisted of conversion from Nissen to Toupet fundoplicat

Reoperative pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: We have noted a continued increase in the number of patients referred to our institution for presumed or biopsy-proven periampullary carcinoma following an "exploratory" laparotomy during which tumor resection was not performed. Although previous work has demonstrated the safety of reoperative pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), the need to avoid nontherapeutic laparotomy in these patients is obvious. In the current study, we sought to determine why PD was not performed at the initial operation. METHODS: Using the prospective pancreatic cancer database, we identified all patients who un
