Visual Priming Enhances the Effects of Nonspatial Cognitive Rehabilitation Training on Spatial Learning After Experimental Traumatic Brain Injury.

Previous work demonstrates that spatial (explicit) and nonspatial (implicit) elements of place learning in the Morris water maze (MWM) task can be dissociated and examined in the context of experimental traumatic brain injury (TBI). Providing nonspatial cognitive training (CT) after injury can improve place learning compared with untrained controls. In the present study, we hypothesized that brief exposure to extra-maze cues, in conjunction with CT, may further improve MWM performance and extra-maze cue utilization compared with CT alone. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats (n = 66) received contro

Global attention facilitates the planning, but not execution of goal-directed reaches.

In daily life, humans interact with multiple objects in complex environments. A large body of literature demonstrates that target selection is biased toward recently attended features, such that reaches are faster and trajectory curvature is reduced when target features (i.e., color) are repeated (priming of pop-out). In the real world, however, objects are comprised of several features-some of which may be more suitable for action than others. When fetching a mug from the cupboard, for example, attention not only has to be allocated to the object, but also the handle. To date, no study has in

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students' Configurational and Phonological Processing in Chinese One- and Two-Character Word Recognition.

To examine deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students' configurational and phonological processing in Chinese one- and two-character word recognition, two experiments were conducted in a primed semantic categorization task. Configurational priming was observed in DHH participants' reaction times (RTs) at the SOA (stimulus onset asynchrony) of 47 ms and in their probability of making erroneous responses at SOAs of 47 and 187 ms in Experiment 1. Phonological priming was revealed in hearing and DHH participants' probability of making erroneous responses in Experiment 2. Hearing participants' RTs ind

A novel visuospatial priming task for rats with relevance to Tourette syndrome and modulation of dopamine levels.

Individuals with Tourette syndrome (TS) exhibit deficits in inhibitory information processing which may reflect impaired neural mechanisms underlying symptoms and which can be detected using a negative priming (NP) task. NP is the normal reduction of performance when identifying target stimuli that appear where non-target stimuli appeared previously. TS subjects exhibit diminished NP and their NP levels predict their response to behavioral therapy. Here we review relevant literature on this issue and also report a novel rat NP task. In the latter, rats respond to target stimuli (continuous lig

How to meet the neighbors: Modality effects on phonological generalization.

Long-term auditory priming of words from dense neighborhoods has been posited as a learning mechanism that affects change in the phonological structure of children's lexical representations. An apparent confound associated with the modality of priming responsible for structural change has been introduced in the literature, which challenges this proposal. Thus, our purpose was to evaluate prime modality in the treatment of children with phonological delay. Nine children were assigned to auditory-visual, auditory, or visual priming of words from dense neighborhoods prior to the treatment of prod

Brain correlates of negative and positive visuospatial priming in adults.

A balance of inhibitory and facilitatory mechanisms is essential for efficient and goal-directed behaviors. These mechanisms may go awry in several neuropsychiatric disorders characterized by uncontrolled, repetitive behaviors. The visuospatial priming paradigm is a well-established probe of inhibition and facilitation that has been used to demonstrate behavioral deficits in patients with Tourette syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder. However, the brain correlates of this visuospatial priming paradigm are not yet well established. In the present study, we used a visuospatial priming para

Neural evidence for reduced apprehensiveness of familiarized stimuli in a mere exposure paradigm.

Mere familiarization with a stimulus increases liking for it or similar stimuli ("mere exposure" effects) as well as perceptual fluency, indexed by the speed and accuracy of categorizing it or similar stimuli ("priming" effects). Candidate mechanisms proposed to explain mere exposure effects include both increased positive affect associated with greater perceptual fluency, and reduced negative affect associated with diminished apprehensiveness of novel stimuli. Although these two mechanisms are not mutually exclusive, it is difficult for behavioral measures to disentangle them, since increased

Cortical effects of repetitive finger flexion- vs. extension-resisted tracking movements: a TMS study.

While the cortical effects of repetitive motor activity are generally believed to be task specific, the task parameters that modulate these effects are incompletely understood. Since there are differences in the neural control of flexor vs. extensor muscles, the type of muscles involved in the motor task of interest may be one important parameter. In addition, the role each muscle plays in the task, such as whether or not it is the prime mover, is another potentially important task parameter. In the present study, use-dependent cortical plasticity was examined in healthy volunteers performing

Repetition suppression in aging: A near-infrared spectroscopy study on the size-congruity effect.

Age-related changes in the hemodynamic response regarding inhibition capacity and repetition suppression were examined using a modified version of the numerical Stroop task. Young (20-38 yrs; M = 28 yrs; N = 18), middle-aged (47-59 yrs; M = 52 yrs; N = 17), and older participants (60-78 yrs; M = 69 yrs; N = 19) solved a physical and numerical version of the size-congruity task, in which trials from the same experimental condition were presented in triplets. Response times revealed a strong Stroop effect in both tasks (faster reaction times during neutral than during incongruent trials) and inc

Frequency and Chunking in Derived Words: A Parametric fMRI Study.

In usage-based linguistic theories, the assumption that high-frequency language strings are mentally represented as unitary chunks has been invoked to account for a wide range of phenomena. However, neurocognitive evidence in support of this assumption is still lacking. In line with Gestalt psychological assumptions, we propose that a language string qualifies as a chunk if the following two conditions are simultaneously satisfied: The perception of the whole string does not involve strong activation of its individual component parts, but the component parts in isolation strongly evoke the who

A different approach to telomere analysis with ddPRINS in chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Telomeric sequences, located at the very end of the chromosomes, compensate for the chromosomal shortening as it happens after each round of cell division. Telomeric sequences influence the progress of cellular senescence and cancer progression. It has been reported that telomeres are shortened in acute leukemias where the cell turnover is high. B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is a particularly interesting haematological malignancy in regard to telomere dynamics because most of the malignant cells in CLL are mitotically inactive. In this study, we analysed the telomere length in pati

Memory encoding in Alzheimer's disease: an fMRI study of explicit and implicit memory.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia in older adults. Although the cognitive deficits and pathologic hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease have been well characterized, few functional imaging studies have examined the functional competency of specific brain regions and their relationship to specific behavioural memory deficits in Alzheimer's disease. We used functional MRI (fMRI) to examine seven early stage Alzheimer's disease patients and seven healthy age-matched neurologically normal control subjects during intentional encoding of scenes. Subjects viewed blocks of novel scen

Delayed lead straight punch performance following resistance priming with different velocity-loss thresholds in highly trained boxers.

BACKGROUND: Optimizing pre-competition priming is critical for maximizing acute performance in combat sports. Traditional percentage-based training (PBT), which uses a fixed percentage of one-repetition maximum (1RM) for a set number of repetitions, is widely used but lacks autoregulation, potentially causing suboptimal stimulus or excessive fatigue. In contrast, velocity-based training (VBT) adjusts training volume by ending sets when a prescribed velocity loss (VL) threshold is reached, providing individualized fatigue management. This study examined delayed punch-performance responses follo

Recovery-Primed Stimulation: A Proposed Framework for Controlled Triggering of Healing-Related Physiology in Low-Grade Chronic Inflammation.

Low-grade chronic inflammation (LGCI) is considered a heterogeneous, persistent, high-burden biological state rather than a single disease entity. In LGCI, inflammation-related pathways can reinforce each other, creating a self-sustaining inflammatory state. This creates a treatment-design problem: stimulation delivered into LGCI biology that is already primed by persistent inflammatory drivers and has not fully returned to a resolved resting state may produce the expected, wanted biological effects, such as braking, resolution, repair, or regulatory recovery, but may also worsen LGCI by addin

Left parietal TMS disturbs priming between symbolic and non-symbolic number representations.

An amodal number representation activated by all types of numerical input, irrespective of the input notation, has often been proposed to be located in the left or right intraparietal sulcus (IPS). Two cross-notational priming experiments were carried out to test the existence of a notation-independent magnitude representation in the left or right parietal lobes. In Experiment 1, stimuli were Arabic digits and number words. Results revealed no significant effect of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over left or right IPS during prime presentation. In contrast, in Experiment 2

Magnetic stimulation of the right visual cortex impairs form-specific priming.

Recent evidence suggests that priming of objects across different images (abstract priming) and priming of specific images of an object (form-specific priming) are mediated by dissociable neural processing subsystems that operate in parallel and are predominantly linked to left and right hemispheric processing, respectively [Marsolek, C. J. Dissociable neural subsystems underlie abstract and specific object recognition. Psychological Science, 10, 111-118, 1999]. Previous brain imaging studies have provided important information about the neuroanatomical regions that are involved in form-specif

Differential impact of thalamic versus subthalamic deep brain stimulation on lexical processing.

Roles of subcortical structures in language processing are vague, but, interestingly, basal ganglia and thalamic Deep Brain Stimulation can go along with reduced lexical capacities. To deepen the understanding of this impact, we assessed word processing as a function of thalamic versus subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation. Ten essential tremor patients treated with thalamic and 14 Parkinson׳s disease patients with subthalamic Deep Brain Stimulation performed an acoustic Lexical Decision Task ON and OFF stimulation. Combined analysis of task performance and event-related potentials allowed the de

The effect of word imagery on priming effect under a preconscious condition: an fMRI study.

Semantic priming is affected by the degree of association and how readily a word is imagined. In the association effect, activity in the perisylvian structures including the bilateral inferior frontal gyrus, the left middle temporal gyrus, and the supramarginal gyrus was correlated. However, little is known about the brain regions related to the effect of imagery word under the preconscious condition. Forty word pairs for high (HA)-, low (LA)-, and nonassociation (NA), nonword (NW) conditions were presented. Each 40 association word pairs (HA and LA) included 20 high (HI) and 20 low (LI) image

Attention on the source of influence reverses the impact of cross-contextual imitation.

Recent investigations of imitation have demonstrated that individuals imitate a primed movement across contexts. For example, when tasting a drink, individuals who observe an athlete lifting a barbell raise their arms to their mouths more often, thus increasing their drink intake because both actions (i.e., weight lifting and drinking) involve the same movements. Other research on semantic priming suggests that individuals often act in the opposite direction of the primed information when their attention is directed toward the source of influence. In one experiment, we tested whether focusing

The lexical status of verbs among typical and dyslexic native Arabic readers: a developmental model.

The goal of this study was to investigate the development of mental lexicon organization among typical and dyslexic native Arabic readers. The participants included 271 students, divided into dyslexic readers, age-matched typical readers, and typical readers 2 years younger. The lexical status of root and pattern morphemes was examined using two priming paradigms: masked priming and the cross-modal immediate repetition task. We conducted two visual lexical decision tasks (Experiment 1 for verb pattern, Experiment 3 for verb roots), and two auditory decision tasks (Experiment 2 for verb pattern
