Analysis of respiratory pressure-volume curves in intensive care medicine using inductive machine learning.

We present a case study of machine learning and data mining in intensive care medicine. In the study, we compared different methods of measuring pressure-volume curves in artificially ventilated patients suffering from the adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Our aim was to show that inductive machine learning can be used to gain insights into differences and similarities among these methods. We defined two tasks: the first one was to recognize the measurement method producing a given pressure-volume curve. This was defined as the task of classifying pressure-volume curves (the classes

Early Prediction of Impending Exertional Heat Stroke With Wearable Multimodal Sensing and Anomaly Detection.

We employed wearable multimodal sensing (heart rate and triaxial accelerometry) with machine learning to enable early prediction of impending exertional heat stroke (EHS). US Army Rangers and Combat Engineers (N = 2,102) were instrumented while participating in rigorous 7-mile and 12-mile loaded rucksack timed marches. There were three EHS cases, and data from 478 Rangers were analyzed for model building and controls. The data-driven machine learning approach incorporated estimates of physiological strain (heart rate) and physical stress (estimated metabolic rate) trajectories, followed by rec

Prediction of acetylcholinesterase inhibition associated with Alzheimer's disease using hybrid descriptor and graph-based machine learning models.

Accurate prediction of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity is important in drug discovery and environmental toxicology because AChE inhibition represents a key mechanism underlying neurotoxicity associated with pharmaceuticals and environmental contaminants. In this study, machine learning approaches were used to develop predictive models for AChE inhibitory activity using experimentally measured bioactivity data for small molecules targeting human AChE. A curated dataset containing 5795 molecules was compiled from BindingDB to support reliable model development. Fifteen predictive

A prototype-augmented graph representation learning framework for identifying brain disorder-associated genes and facilitating drug repurposing.

Many genetic loci were identified as associated with neuropsychiatric disorders and neurodegenerative disorders by Genome-wide association studies (GWAS). How these loci impact these diseases is unclear. Advances in deep-learning approaches and multi-omics data have the potential to link GWAS findings with disease mechanisms. Here, we proposed the Multi-omics Graph Transformer Network (MOGT), a semi-supervised graph neural network that leverages graph representation learning to model biological networks derived from multi-omics data to predict disease-associated genes. MOGT outperforms the cur

Contrastive learning of heart and lung sounds for label-efficient diagnosis.

Data labeling is often the limiting step in machine learning because it requires time from trained experts. To address the limitation on labeled data, contrastive learning, among other unsupervised learning methods, leverages unlabeled data to learn representations of data. Here, we propose a contrastive learning framework that utilizes metadata for selecting positive and negative pairs when training on unlabeled data. We demonstrate its application in the healthcare domain on heart and lung sound recordings. The increasing availability of heart and lung sound recordings due to adoption of dig

Transitive Sequencing Medical Records for Mining Predictive and Interpretable Temporal Representations.

Electronic health records (EHRs) contain important temporal information about the progression of disease and treatment outcomes. This paper proposes a transitive sequencing approach for constructing temporal representations from EHR observations for downstream machine learning. Using clinical data from a cohort of patients with congestive heart failure, we mined temporal representations by transitive sequencing of EHR medication and diagnosis records for classification and prediction tasks. We compared the classification and prediction performances of the transitive sequential representations

Enhancing EEG Classification for Motor Imagery Control of a VR Game based on Deep Learning Techniques on Small Datasets.

Motor imagery-based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCIs) suffer from limited accuracy when the EEG dataset is recorded from naive BCI users due to noisy components. Neural networks capture more robust representations of EEG features, but require large amount of data which is challenging to collect, due to long motor imagery training sessions. On the other hand, linear- and Riemann-based machine learning algorithms achieve above chance-level accuracy on small scale datasets, but, performance degrades on noisy datasets. To address this issue, we implemented a Wasserstein Generative Adversarial Netwo

Identifying gut microbiome signatures of type 1 diabetes using machine learning and evolutionary feature selection.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1D) has been increasingly associated with alterations in the gut microbiome. However, the impact of taxonomic resolution, feature selection strategies, and machine learning methods on microbiome-based prediction remains incompletely understood. METHODS: We analyzed publicly available 16S rRNA gene sequencing datasets from two geographic cohorts to evaluate microbiome-based prediction of T1D. Microbial features were constructed at multiple taxonomic levels and as full hierarchical taxonomic paths preserving phylogenetic structure. Machine learning models

Hybrid machine learning framework for electrical grid stability prediction using comparative model evaluation.

INTRODUCTION: Accurately predicting electrical grid stability is essential to ensuring the reliability, resilience, and sustainable operation of modern smart energy systems. The nonlinear interactions among the grid operating parameters make stability prediction challenging, particularly when conventional machine learning models depend primarily on statistical relationships, without clearly incorporating physically meaningful characteristics. METHODS: This study presents a systematic comparative evaluation of machine-learning and deep-learning approaches for electrical grid stability predicti

Addressing the Challenge of Biomedical Data Inequality: An Artificial Intelligence Perspective.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and other data-driven technologies hold great promise to transform healthcare and confer the predictive power essential to precision medicine. However, the existing biomedical data, which are a vital resource and foundation for developing medical AI models, do not reflect the diversity of the human population. The low representation in biomedical data has become a significant health risk for non-European populations, and the growing application of AI opens a new pathway for this health risk to manifest and amplify. Here we review the current status of biomedical da

KAPI-LM: kernel-adaptive physics-informed learning machines for PDEs.

Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) have emerged as mesh-free approaches for solving partial differential equations, but their learned representations are often difficult to interpret. RBF-kernel-based formulations such as sparse, physics-based, and interpretable neural networks (SPINNs) make the geometry of the physical kernels explicit and show that kernels adapt coherently around dominant solution features, motivating the question of whether all kernel geometries need to remain independent. To investigate this question, we introduce kernel-adaptive physics-informed learning machines (K

A New Method for Heart Disease Detection: Long Short-Term Feature Extraction from Heart Sound Data.

Heart sounds have been extensively studied for heart disease diagnosis for several decades. Traditional machine learning algorithms applied in the literature have typically partitioned heart sounds into small windows and employed feature extraction methods to classify samples. However, as there is no optimal window length that can effectively represent the entire signal, windows may not provide a sufficient representation of the underlying data. To address this issue, this study proposes a novel approach that integrates window-based features with features extracted from the entire signal, ther

Classification of follicular lymphoma images: a holistic approach with symbol-based machine learning methods.

It is not very often to see a symbol-based machine learning approach to be used for the purpose of image classification and recognition. In this paper we will present such an approach, which we first used on the follicular lymphoma images. Lymphoma is a broad term encompassing a variety of cancers of the lymphatic system. Lymphoma is differentiated by the type of cell that multiplies and how the cancer presents itself. It is very important to get an exact diagnosis regarding lymphoma and to determine the treatments that will be most effective for the patient's condition. Our work was focused o

Diagnosis of Infantile Hip Dysplasia With B-Mode Ultrasound via Two-Stage Meta-Learning Based Deep Exclusivity Regularized Machine.

The B-mode ultrasound (BUS) based computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) has shown its effectiveness for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in infants. In this work, a two-stage meta-learning based deep exclusivity regularized machine (TML-DERM) is proposed for the BUS-based CAD of DDH. TML-DERM integrates deep neural network (DNN) and exclusivity regularized machine into a unified framework to simultaneously improve the feature representation and classification performance. Moreover, the first-stage meta-learning is mainly conducted on the DNN module to alleviate the overfitting issue caused by

Neuro-ocular amyloid characterization in Alzheimer's disease via cross-site PET-MRI and hierarchical cross-attention driven multimodal representation learning.

The eye is often described as a window to the brain and may offer a non-invasive opportunity for investigating neurodegenerative changes. Although cerebral amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation is a well-established hallmark of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the potential of ocular regions to capture aspects of this pathology in positron emission tomography (PET) remains underexplored. Our primary objective is to conduct a radiomics-SUVR analysis to investigate the relationship between ocular regions of interest (ROI) extracted from PET imaging and regional SUVR values obtained from six brain PET regions. Learning Cognitive-Test-Based Interpretable Rules for Prediction and Early Diagnosis of Dementia Using Neural Networks.

BACKGROUND: Accurate, cheap, and easy to promote methods for dementia prediction and early diagnosis are urgently needed in low- and middle-income countries. Integrating various cognitive tests using machine learning provides promising solutions. However, most effective machine learning models are black-box models that are hard to understand for doctors and could hide potential biases and risks. OBJECTIVE: To apply cognitive-test-based machine learning models in practical dementia prediction and diagnosis by ensuring both interpretability and accuracy. METHODS: We design a framework adopting

Modality-independent representations of small quantities based on brain activation patterns.

Machine learning or MVPA (Multi Voxel Pattern Analysis) studies have shown that the neural representation of quantities of objects can be decoded from fMRI patterns, in cases where the quantities were visually displayed. Here we apply these techniques to investigate whether neural representations of quantities depicted in one modality (say, visual) can be decoded from brain activation patterns evoked by quantities depicted in the other modality (say, auditory). The main finding demonstrated, for the first time, that quantities of dots were decodable by a classifier that was trained on the neur

Using machine learning to reveal the population vector from EEG signals.

OBJECTIVE: Since the discovery of the population vector that directly relates neural spiking activity with arm movement direction, it has become feasible to control robotic arms and neuroprostheses using invasively recorded brain signals. For non-invasive approaches, a direct relation between human brain signals and arm movement direction is yet to be established. APPROACH: Here, we investigated electroencephalographic (EEG) signals in temporal and spectral domains in a continuous, circular arm movement task. Using machine learning methods that respect the linear mixture of brain activity wit

Chemically Interpretable Explanations for Molecular Property Prediction via Fragment-Level Shapley Values.

Machine learning has emerged as a powerful approach for molecular property prediction and drug discovery. However, the black-box nature of many machine learning models limits their interpretability, trustworthiness, and adoption in interdisciplinary research settings. This is especially the case in molecular machine learning, where explanations of model predictions are used for informed decision-making and downstream tasks. Shapley values, originating from cooperative game theory, provide a principled framework for attributing model predictions to individual input features. However, existing S
