Modifications in gonadotropin control and reproductive behavior in the female rat by hypothalamic and preoptic lesions.

Effects of small hypothalamic and preoptic area lesions on vaginal cyclicity, ovulation and ovarian weights of female rats were examined. Animals were then gonadectomized and tested for lordosis behavior following injections of estrogen alone and estrogen plus progesterone. Male sex behavior was also measured during daily treatment with testosterone. Relative to sham operated rats, lesions in the dorsal preoptic area produced a significant increase in lordosis behavior, virtual elimination of male sex behavior, and only marginal effects on ovarian function. Animals with lesions in the ventral

Reproductive Control in Dogs with Emphasis on Anti-GnRH Immunocastration and Its Behavioral Effects.

Dog overpopulation poses serious challenges to public health, animal welfare, and environmental sustainability. While surgical castration remains the most commonly used method for controlling reproduction in dogs, it carries risks and limitations, including surgical complications and long-term behavioral or physiological side effects. This review examines the potential of immunocastration-vaccination targeting gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH)-as an alternative approach. Immunocastration has been shown to suppress reproductive hormones, reduce gonadal function, and decrease behaviors such

Reproductive function and behaviors: an update on the role of neural estrogen receptors alpha and beta.

Infertility is becoming a major public health problem, with increasing frequency due to medical, environmental and societal causes. The increasingly late age of childbearing, growing exposure to endocrine disruptors and other reprotoxic products, and increasing number of medical reproductive dysfunctions (endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome, etc.) are among the most common causes. Fertility relies on fine-tuned control of both neuroendocrine function and reproductive behaviors, those are critically regulated by sex steroid hormones. Testosterone and estradiol exert organizational and acti

Sleep quality, estradiol levels, and behavioral factors in late reproductive age women.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of perceived poor sleep in women aged 35-49 years and to correlate sleep quality with levels of gonadal steroids and predictors of poor sleep. METHODS: A cohort of 218 black and 218 white women aged 35-47 years at enrollment (aged 37-49 at final follow-up) with regular menstrual cycles was identified through random digit dialing for a longitudinal study of ovarian aging correlates. Data obtained at four assessment periods, including enrollment, over a 2-year interval were collected between days 1 and 6 (mean = 3.9) of the menstrual cycle. The primary outc

Some aspects of the hypothalamic and pituitary development, metamorphosis, and reproductive behavior as studied in amphibians.

In this review article, information about the development of the hypothalamo-hypophyseal axis, endocrine control of metamorphosis, and hormonal and pheromonal involvements in reproductive behavior in some amphibian species is assembled from the works conducted mainly by our research group. The hypothalamic and pituitary development was studied using Bufo embryos and larvae. The primordium of the epithelial hypophysis originates at the anterior neural ridge and migrates underneath the brain to form a Rathke's pouch-like structure. The hypothalamo-hypophyseal axis develops under the influence of

Effects of prenatal testosterone on sexual behavior, reproductive morphology and LH secretion in the female rat.

Sexual differentiation of many brain structures and functions is dependent on levels of testosterone (T) or its metabolites during certain 'sensitive' developmental periods. If T is present during these perinatal periods, masculinization and defeminization of sexual behavior occur; also, reproductive physiology, and central nervous system morphology and function are altered. The purpose of the present study was to characterize the influence of T at specific prenatal developmental intervals on offspring reproductive morphology, physiology, locomotor activity and sexual behavior during postnatal

The influence of sex and reproductive cycle on cocaine-induced behavioral and neurobiological alterations: a review.

This systematic review (SR) was aimed at answering two questions: (1) how sex and ovarian hormones alter behavior associated with cocaine use; (2) which possible neurobiological mechanisms explain behavioral differences. Three different researchers conducted a search in PUBMED for all kinds of articles published between the years of 1991 to 2021 on the theme "reproductive cycle and cocaine", "estrous cycle and cocaine", "menstrual cycle and cocaine", "fluctuation of ovarian hormones and cocaine", "estrogen and cocaine" and "progesterone and cocaine". Sixty original studies were identified and

Prenatal exposure to aflatoxin B1: developmental, behavioral, and reproductive alterations in male rats.

Previous studies have shown that aflatoxin B1 (AfB1) inhibits androgen biosynthesis as a result of its ability to form a high-affinity complex with the steroidogenic acute regulatory protein. The results of the present study demonstrate the postnatal effects of in utero exposure to AfB1 in the rat. Pregnant Wistar rats were given 10, 20, or 50 μg AfB1/kg body weight daily from gestation day (GD) 12 to GD 19. At parturition, newborns were observed for clinical signs and survival. All animals were born alive and initially appeared to be active. Male pups from control and AfB1-exposed animals wer

Reproduction-related behaviors of Swiss-Webster female mice living in a cold environment.

Based on a molecular neuroendocrine theory about cold environments, thyroid hormone levels, and liganded thyroid hormone receptor interference with estrogen receptor function, experiments were designed to test female mouse reproductive behaviors in the cold. Because natural seasonal temperature declines would usually be associated with decreased photoperiods and reduced food supplies, we combined cold temperatures with short days and metabolic challenge. The simplest hypothesis was that lordosis quotients would be significantly reduced as a result of cold temperatures. That hypothesis was deni

IMPACT OF REAL-LIFE ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES ON REPRODUCTION: Rodent reproductive behavior among males and females after exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

IN BRIEF: The rodent reproductive behavioral control column of the hypothalamus and the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis are critical systems that regulate copulatory behaviors in both males and females. We review how endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), specifically phthalates, bisphenol A, and chemical mixtures, dysregulate appetitive and consummatory copulatory behaviors and their neuroendocrine substrates, using mouse and rodent models. ABSTRACT: Sexual reproduction - from both physiological and behavioral perspectives - is dependent upon appropriate connections between a diver

Chronic exposure to diisopentyl phthalate impairs behavior, metabolism, and reproductive processes in adult female zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The widespread use of diisopentyl phthalate (DiPP) in plastics and consumer products has raised concerns due to its potential endocrine-disrupting effects and detection in biological samples from humans, including pregnant women. However, the chronic multi-system toxicity of DiPP at environmentally relevant concentrations in adult vertebrates remains poorly characterized. To address this gap, adult female zebrafish (Danio rerio) were chronically exposed (30 days) to environmentally relevant DiPP concentrations (31.25, 62.5, and 125 μg/L), with a focus on reproduction, metabolism, and neurobeha

Reproductive and Behavior Dysfunction Induced by Maternal Androgen Exposure and Obesity Is Likely Not Gut Microbiome-Mediated.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine and metabolic disorder of unclear etiology in women and is characterized by androgen excess, insulin resistance, and mood disorders. The gut microbiome is known to influence conditions closely related with PCOS, and several recent studies have observed changes in the stool microbiome of women with PCOS. The mechanism by which the gut microbiome interacts with PCOS is still unknown. We used a mouse model to investigate if diet-induced maternal obesity and maternal DHT exposure, mimicking the lean and obese PCOS women, cause lasting changes

The effect of endoscopic sterilization on reproductive behavior and pair bond maintenance of feral pigeons (Columba livia).

OBJECTIVE: Problems related to feral pigeons (Columba livia) in cities mainly result from their large numbers due to uncontrolled population growth. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether endoscopic guided sterilization affects the reproductive behavior of feral pigeons under experimental conditions, with the intention of assessing this technique as a potential method for feral pigeon population control. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five groups of four pairs of feral pigeons each were studied from 8 weeks before, to 7 weeks after sterilization. Both the male and female of the first pair of e

Paternal dapoxetine administration induced deterioration in reproductive performance, fetal outcome, sexual behavior and biochemistry of male rats.

Dapoxetine, a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, is considered an antidepressant drug and has been developed for the treatment of premature ejaculation. Hence the objective was to assess whether dapoxetine administration to male rats adversely affect sexual behavior and pregnancy outcomes after mating with untreated female rats. Proven fertile male rats were gavaged with 0, 2.0, 4.0 and 8.0 mg dapoxetine per kg body weight (bw) per day (DC, DI, DII and DIII groups, respectively) for 70 days prior to mating with untreated female rats. Weight gain, organ weights and feed consumption were de

Integrative assessment of sulfoxaflor effects on gene expression, reproduction, and behavior in the bumblebee Bombus impatiens.

Social insect pollinators, such as bumblebees, face increasing threats from environmental agrochemicals; yet the sublethal effects of these compounds across different levels of biological organization remain poorly understood. This study uses an integrative approach to examine how chronic exposure to sublethal concentrations of the insecticide sulfoxaflor affects the common eastern bumblebee (Bombus impatiens). Microcolonies of B. impatiens worker bees were fed sulfoxaflor-treated sugar water for 21 days. We then assessed changes in molecular, physiological, and behavioral traits resulting fro
