Journal of thoracic oncology : official publication of the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer2015eng
INTRODUCTION: Results from the Women's Health Initiative clinical trials demonstrated no increase in the risk of lung cancer in postmenopausal women treated with hormone therapy (HT). We conducted a joint analysis of the Women's Health Initiative observational study data and clinical trials data to further explore the association between estrogen and estrogen-related reproductive factors and lung cancer risk.
METHODS: Reproductive history, oral contraceptive use, and postmenopausal HT were evaluated in 160,855 women with known HT exposures. Follow-up for lung cancer was through September 17,

BACKGROUND: Ukraine has the highest antenatal HIV prevalence in Europe. The national prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) programme has reduced the MTCT rate, but less attention has been given to the prevention of unintended pregnancy among HIV-positive women. Our objectives were to describe the reproductive health, condom use and family planning (FP) practices of HIV-positive childbearing Ukrainian women and to identify factors associated with different methods of post-natal contraception.
METHODS: HIV-infected childbearing women, diagnosed before or during pregnancy, were enrol

In the United States, breast, cervical, colorectal and prostate cancer screening rates are low or non-existent in the Hmong population compared to non-Hispanic Whites. No Hmong adults report ever participating in prostate (male only) and colorectal cancer screening. US-born Hmong women, those living in the US 20 years, and those 39 years old are more likely to be screened for breast and cervical cancer than other women. The Hmong, in general, are a young population (median age = 34 years) with low socioeconomic status. As a function of these characteristics, 52% of Hmong women reported having

The relation between family history of ovarian, breast, and endometrial cancer and risk of epithelial ovarian carcinoma was analyzed within the framework of a case-control study conducted from 1983 to 1989. The study included 755 cases of ovarian cancer and 2,023 controls in hospital for a spectrum of acute nongynecologic, hormonal, or neoplastic conditions in the Greater Milan area, Italy. Eighteen cases (2%) and 24 controls (1%) reported a history of ovarian cancer in a first-degree relative: The corresponding multivariate adjusted odds ratio (OR) was 1.9 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.1-3.

Background: The ability to accurately recall specific reproductive health events is an integral aspect of medical decision making and evaluating a female's overall health and wellness across their lifespan. The Health and Reproductive Survey (HeRS) was developed to recall reproductive events and environmental influences on reproductive characteristics throughout the lifespan of a female. This study aimed to determine how reliably women recall certain events during menarche and early reproductive years. It was hypothesized that age at menarche, hormonal contraceptive use, and physical activity

To understand effects of aging and reproductive history in the bones of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus), mandibles from 79 males and 66 females were analyzed. Dry bone specimen was prepared from dissected mandible, and analyzed using a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) measurement system in terms of bone weight (BnW), bone area (AREA), bone mineral content (BMC), bone mineral density (BMD, ratio of BMC to AREA) and bone mineral ratio (BMR, ratio of BMC to BnW). The mandible bones became porous and thicker with age. The age-related changes in BnW, AREA and BMC showed inflection point

Background Reproductive events, that is, a preterm birth (PTB), small-for-gestational-age infant (SGA), and vasomotor symptoms of menopause, are associated with subclinical atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). We evaluated whether women with a past PTB and/or SGA (henceforth PTB/SGA) were more likely to have severe vasomotor symptoms of menopause and whether the estimated 10-year ASCVD risk was higher in women with PTB/SGA and vasomotor exposures. Methods and Results We assigned 1866 women (mean age=55±1 years) in the CARDIA (Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults) study t

OBJECTIVES: The metabolic changes of pregnancy resemble a cardiovascular risk profile and may persist postpartum, with body mass index (BMI) as a potential modifier. We examined the association between the number of live-birth pregnancies and maternal premenopausal risks of hypertension and cardiovascular disease (CVD), accounting for pre-pregnancy BMI as well as abortions and stillbirths.
DESIGN: A prospective cohort study.
SETTING: Mothers from the Danish National Birth Cohort (1996 to 2002). For each of these women, registry data on all pregnancies from 1973 to 2011 were obtained, as were

Zika transmission from mother to fetus and its possible sexual transmission have become a media focus in the past months as a major public health concern. While mother-to-fetus transmission, fetal neurologic manifestations or sexual transmission have never been documented for this virus before, other viruses that belong to the same family are very well known to reproductive health workers, clinicians, and researchers. As a member of Flaviviridae family, including hepatitis C and bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), Zika's pathogenesis may have some parallels with these infections which may pose

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between breast cancer risk, reproductive factors, and family history of breast cancer by the estrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) status. We analyzed data from an Italian case-control study including 1075 women with incident breast cancer and 1477 hospital controls. We estimated the odds ratios (ORs) of breast cancer using unconditional logistic regression models including major recognized risk factors for breast cancer. Stronger associations with ER+ than with ER- breast cancer were observed for parity (OR: 0.7 vs. 0.9

Evidence from epidemiologic studies suggests a possible role of exogenous and endogenous hormones in colorectal carcinogenesis in women. However, with respect to exogenous hormones, in contrast to hormone replacement therapy, few cohort studies have examined oral contraceptive use in relation to colorectal cancer risk. We used data from a large cohort study of Canadian women enrolled in a randomized controlled trial of breast cancer screening to assess the association of oral contraceptive use, hormone replacement therapy and reproductive factors with risk of colorectal cancer, overall and by

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate reproductive history risk factors in breast cancer among Hispanic (HISP) women in the U.S. southwest, a population with approximately 33% lower breast cancer incidence than non-Hispanic whites (NHW).
METHODS: Population-based case-control study of HISP (796 cases, 919 controls) and NHW (1,525 cases, 1,596 controls) women.
RESULTS: 19.3% of HISP women reported five or more births and had a reduced risk of breast cancer, adjusted odds ratio (OR) 0.70 (95% confidence interval (CI): 0.50, 0.98) compared to those with one or two births. Breast cancer risk for HISP increased

This article compares sterilized and non-sterilized women in relation to socio-demographic characteristics, reproductive history, and cohabitation status. Women from 30 to 49 years of age and residing in Campinas, São Paulo State, Brazil, were interviewed with a pre-tested and structured questionnaire: 236 women sterilized at least five years before the interview and 236 non-sterilized women. The sterilized women were significantly more likely to be married or cohabiting, to be younger when they began cohabiting, and to have been in the union longer than the non-sterilized women. They also beg

The percent population attributable risk (AR) for breast cancer was estimated in relation to education, family history of the disease and some reproductive and hormonal factors, using data from a case-control study conducted between June 1991 and February 1994 in 6 Italian centres on 2,569 histologically confirmed incident breast cancer cases and 2,588 controls, admitted to hospital for a wide range of acute, non-neoplastic, non-hormone-related diseases. On the basis of multivariate odds ratios, a high level of education accounted for 20% of cases, elevated age at first birth and nulliparity f

Reproductive history has implications for long-term health, with menopausal timing and parity associated with chronic disease risk. DNA methylation (DNAm) clocks are biomarkers of aging and estimate epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) in reproductive tissues and systemically. DNAm clocks provide mechanistic insight into how reproductive history relates to aging. This study aimed to identify associations between reproductive history and DNAm clocks. Twenty-nine studies comprising 550,550 participants (median mean age=35.4 (IQR: 30.3-62.7) years, 100% female) assessing associations between reprodu

Trends in modern society show an increase in maternal age due to deferred childbearing, and assisted reproductive technologies often make this possible. However, there are still numerous challenges in the field of reproductive health, ranging from conception to delivery and beyond. Wild animals may provide answers to some of the field's pressing problems because these species have acquired adaptations to maximize reproductive output under some of the world's most extreme conditions. Here, I focus on 3 key aspects of marine mammal life history that could provide significant insight into reprodu

PURPOSE: The male predominance of the two main histologic malignancies of the small bowel cancer may reflect a role of sex hormones which will be examined in this study.
METHODS: This was a nationwide population-based nested case-control study, based on a cohort of subjects born between 1932 and 2008, as identified in the Swedish Multi-Generation Register. For each case of small bowel cancer, 10 age- and sex-matched controls were randomly selected. Number of children and age at having the first child were analyzed in relation to the risk of small bowel cancer using conditional logistic regres

BACKGROUND: Inconsistent definitions and incomplete data have left society largely in the dark regarding mortality risks generally associated with pregnancy and with particular outcomes, immediately after resolution and over the long-term. Population-based record-linkage studies provide an accurate means for deriving maternal mortality rate data.
METHOD: In this Danish population-based study, records of women born between 1962 and 1993 (n = 1,001,266) were examined to identify associations between patterns of pregnancy resolution and mortality rates across 25 years.
RESULTS: With statistical

BACKGROUND: Triple-negative (ie, estrogen receptor [ER], progesterone receptor, and HER2 negative) breast cancer occurs disproportionately among African American women compared with white women and is associated with a worse prognosis than ER-positive (ER+) breast cancer. Hormonally mediated risk factors may be differentially related to risk of triple-negative and ER+ breast cancers.
METHODS: Using data from 155,723 women enrolled in the Women's Health Initiative, we assessed associations between reproductive and menstrual history, breastfeeding, oral contraceptive use, and subtype-specific b
