The usefulness of breathing and relaxation techniques influencing the autonomic nervous system state in psychiatry. A subjective review of contemporary research. Part 2 - Western tradition.

The authors present a subjective review of recent research on the use of selected techniques influencing the state of the autonomic nervous system, based on the Western tradition, i.e. autogenic training by Johannes Heinrich Schultz and progressive muscle relaxation by Edmund Jacobson. The basic assumptions of both methods are discussed, taking into account the modifications that have occurred since their creation, pointing to their consequences and the necessity of taking them into account in research. The importance of including as accurate descriptions of the used interventions as possible

Acalabrutinib in patients with mantle cell lymphoma subjected to allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation. a phase 2 study by the Polish Lymphoma Research Group (PLRG12 trial).

This phase 2 trial evaluated the safety and efficacy of acalabrutinib used to reduce tumor burden before allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) and as a maintenance therapy after transplantation in patients with relapsed/refractory mantle cell lymphoma (R/R MCL). Patients were treated with acalabrutinib 100 mg BID for 3-6 months. Those achieving complete or partial response (CR, PR) were referred for allo-HCT. Acalabrutinib was restarted 30-90 days after allo-HCT and administered for the subsequent 9 months. The remaining patients continued acalabrutinib until progression or

Effects of Combined Respiratory Physiotherapy with High-Flow Nasal Cannula and Venturi Mask in Spinal Cord Injury: A Single-Subject Research Study and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: The level of spinal cord injury affects the severity of respiratory impairment and the alteration of respiratory pattern and gas exchanges. Lesions at the C3-C5 level (phrenic nerve nucleus) cause disruption of descending input with paralysis of the main inspiratory muscle, often requiring tracheostomy and prolonged mechanical ventilation. Oxygen therapy is essential to switch from ventilatory support to removal of the endotracheal tube to correct residual difficulties in oxygenation management. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old man had tracheostomy and tetraparesis as complication

Impact of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in glycogen storage disease type Ib: A single-subject research design using 13C-glucose breath test.

BACKGROUND: Glycogen storage disease type Ib (GSD Ib) is an autosomal recessively inherited deficiency of the glucose-6-phosphate translocase (G6PT). Clinical features include a combination of a metabolic phenotype (fasting hypoglycemia, lactic acidosis, hepatomegaly) and a hematologic phenotype with neutropenia and neutrophil dysfunction. Dietary treatment involves provision of starches such as uncooked cornstarch (UCCS) and Glycosade® to provide prolonged enteral supply of glucose. Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) is the treatment of choice for neutropenia. Because long-term sti

Reflections on researcher departure: Closure of prison relationships in ethnographic research.

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom has the highest incarceration rate in Western Europe. It is known that women in prison are a vulnerable female population who are at risk of mental ill-health due to disadvantaged and chaotic life experiences. Accurate numbers of pregnant women held in UK prisons are not recorded, yet it is estimated that 6%-7% of the female prison population are at varying stages of pregnancy and around 100 babies are born to incarcerated women each year. There are limited published papers that document the departure of the researcher following closure of fieldwork with women in

The BEYONDD Pilot Study: A Decentralized Community-Engaged Research Framework for Multimodal Characterization of Neurodegenerative Risk in a Multi-Ethnic, Midlife Cohort with Subjective Cognitive or Behavioral Complaints.

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD) pathology begin decades before diagnosis, yet scalable risk detection infrastructures for midlife adults remain limited. The Biomarker Evaluation of Young Onset Dementia from Diverse Populations (BEYONDD; R56AG075744) pilot study was designed to address this gap through a decentralized, community-engaged research (CER) model for neurodegenerative risk detection in midlife adults with subjective cognitive or behavioral complaints (sCBC). METHODS: This cross-sectional pilot assessed the feasibility of CER-based digital recruitmen

How Do Accredited Organizations Evaluate the Quality and Effectiveness of Their Human Research Protection Programs?

BACKGROUND: Meaningfully evaluating the quality of institutional review boards (IRBs) and human research protection programs (HRPPs) is a long-recognized challenge. To be accredited by the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP), organizations must demonstrate that they measure and improve HRPP "quality, effectiveness, and efficiency" (QEE). We sought to learn how AAHRPP-accredited organizations interpret and satisfy this standard, in order to assess strengths, weaknesses, and gaps in current approaches and to inform recommendations for improvement. Offering aggregate results to participants in genomic research: opportunities and challenges.

Although issues involved in offering individual results to participants in genomic research have received considerable attention, communication of aggregate results has been the subject of relatively little ethical analysis. Offering participants aggregate results is typically assumed to be a good thing, and studies have found that a significant majority of biobank research participants, when asked about their interest in aggregate results, say that access to such information would be important. Even so, return of aggregate results remains a relatively uncommon practice. In this article, we ex

An experiment in privacy protection.

During investigation of toxic shock syndrome in New South Wales, record keepers were requested not to disclose the identities of subjects. Nevertheless, many record keepers disclosed these identities to the investigator. Covering letters giving extra stress to privacy protection had no special effect. The extent of disclosure appeared to be greater for record keepers who either are infrequently approached for research data or lack the facilities to prepare non-identified abstracts of personal information. These record keepers may benefit from education about their responsibilities.

Investigation of risk factors associated with the development of depressive symptoms in healthy subjects exposed to long-term stress: A prospective study of the Japanese Antarctic research expedition wintering party.

BACKGROUND: Stressors induce depression together with parenting experienced in childhood, personality traits, and sleep. In this study, we investigated factors associated with the development of depression in a long-term stressful environment, namely, the Antarctic Research Expedition wintering party, by comparing 2 groups, the depression and nondepression groups. METHODS: A self-administered questionnaire was used to survey 91 members of the Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition who spent winters in the Antarctic base. Psychological evaluations of depression, anxiety, and sleep were perform

Method and design of drug treatment research of subjective premature ejaculation in men differs from that of lifelong premature ejaculation in males: proposal for a new objective measure (part 1).

As lifelong premature ejaculation (PE) and subjective PE are two different PE subtypes, the measurement of their characteristic features requires different objective measures. In this article, we address the differences between lifelong PE and subjective PE, in terms of the extent of variation of sexual performance and propose a new objective measure for research of subjective PE. By considering lifelong PE as a mainly "male" sex disorder and subjective PE as a mainly "man" sex disorder, we show that stopwatch-mediated intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT) measurement is most adequate f

Association between anxious depression and clinical outcomes in subjects with treatment-resistant depression: a comparative effectiveness research trial for antidepressant incomplete and non-responders with treatment-resistant depression (ASCERTAIN-TRD).

OBJECTIVE: Anxious depression is a negative prognostic factor linked to worse outcomes in major depressive disorder (MDD). However, its role in treatment-resistant depression (TRD) remains unclear. This secondary analysis of the ASCERTAIN-TRD trial investigates the role of anxious depression as a predictor or moderator of treatment response. METHODS: A Hamilton Depression Rating Scale Anxiety and Somatization Subscale score of at least 7 identified subjects with the anxious depressive subtype. Treatment response was evaluated based on changes in Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale score

Revisiting the Obligation to Share Aggregate Results with Research Participants in the Era of Open Science.

Open science initiatives, intended to democratize access to research products, have made steady progress in shifting the global science culture toward practices like preregistration and data sharing. However, current open science efforts have not yet addressed the special obligation to ensure that research results are made accessible to the portion of the general population who contribute most directly to scientific advances: research participants. In this article, we explore the ethical obligation to communicate aggregate results to research participants and consider elements of open science

Patient treatment preference as a predictor of clinical outcomes in subjects with treatment-resistant depression: a comparative effectiveness research trial for antidepressant incomplete and nonresponders with treatment-resistant depression (ASCERTAIN-TRD).

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe and debilitating illness. Despite the available treatments, clinical outcomes remain suboptimal, and hence, it is crucial to identify predictive factors for response. This is a secondary analysis investigating the relationship between treatment preference and response to treatment in the antidepressant incomplete and non-responders with treatment resistant depression (ASCERTAIN-TRD) trial (NCT02977299) comparing three treatment arms [aripiprazole augmentation, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) augmentation, switching to venlafaxine

Exploring attitudes to research involving human subjects among Vietnamese university students: establishing a prospective longitudinal mixed-methods student cohort at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City.

Research capacity is increasing in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), with progressive development in the range and complexity of studies being undertaken, often in collaboration with high-income country partners. Although senior local stakeholders are typically involved in ensuring that research is conducted according to accepted standards for ethical and scientific quality, to date there has been little exploration of the views of younger generations around the ethics of research involving human subjects. We present our protocol to establish a longitudinal mixed-methods student cohort
