Cancer epidemiology, biomarkers & prevention : a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research, cosponsored by the American Society of Preventive Oncology2026eng
BACKGROUND: Racialized economic segregation is linked to higher cancer-specific mortality; however, its impact on healthcare utilization (HCU) remains unclear. This study used the metric Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE) and evaluated the association between racial residential segregation (ICErace), racialized economic segregation (ICErace + income), and HCU among patients with breast cancer receiving chemotherapy.
METHODS: Patients ≥18 years who received chemotherapy and surgical management for stage I to III breast cancer (2012-2020) were identified in the electronic health recor

Urban transit networks are crucial for sustainable cities, yet their uneven distribution often results in unequal access to urban resources. Prior studies primarily focused on accessibility within transit networks while overlooking its implications for residents' behaviors and the historical and political roots of inequality. Using door-to-door transit information and over 66 million mobility records, we examine racial disparities in New York City's transit accessibility and their impact on mobility behaviors. We find that ethnic minorities have 4.9% lower neighborhood accessibility, 15.7% les

INTRODUCTION: Social environmental factors are associated with risky health behaviors. However, limited research examines these relationships among older adults and across multiple levels of the social environment.
METHODS: This study analyzed data from a 2021 survey of older adults (aged ≥50 years, n=2,774) in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. Using a socioecologic framework, the social environment was measured at the levels of the individual (loneliness, resilience, perceived discrimination), interpersonal (emotional social support), neighborhood (attraction to neighborhood, acts of neigh

Evidence has documented the effects of place on perinatal outcomes, but less is known about the sociopolitical mechanisms, such as gentrification, that shape neighborhood context and produce spatialized inequities in adverse birth outcomes. Leveraging a diverse sample in California, we assessed the associations between gentrification and birth outcomes: preterm birth, small-for-gestational-age, and low birth weight. Gentrification was measured using the Freeman method and the Displacement and Gentrification Typology. Descriptive analysis assessed outcome prevalence and race and ethnicity distr

In Black population centres in the USA, adult sex ratios (ASRs) are strongly female-biased primarily due to high male incarceration and early mortality rates. I explore the system of social determinants that shape these ASRs, and describe their apparent consequences. Evidence suggests that female-biased ASRs play a role, along with racial residential segregation, to increase mixing between core and peripheral members of sexual networks, facilitating transmission of human immunodeficiency virus and other sexually transmitted infections. Unique historical factors underlie Black male incarceratio

RATIONALE & OBJECTIVE: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is associated with increased mortality and disproportionately affects minoritized patients with kidney failure, particularly Black patients. Among patients with kidney failure, we tested whether neighborhood characteristics (racial and ethnic segregation, socioeconomic deprivation, and built environment) modified the association between PM2.5 exposure and mortality, overall and by race and ethnicity.
STUDY DESIGN: Cohort study (2003-2019).
SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: National registry for patients with kidney failure.
EXPOSURES: Annualized

OBJECTIVE: To understand relationships between healthcare use and food and housing insecurity in Medicaid expansion members, as well as whether these relationships differ by rurality or residential segregation.
DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SETTING: Database of Virginia Medicaid expansion members from the Department of Medical Assistance Services. Sample included individuals who enrolled January-June 2019, were aged 19-64 years, remained continuously enrolled for 12 months, and completed a Medicaid Member Health Screening (MMHS) conducted within the first 3 months of enrollment (n = 14,735).

Residential segregation drives exposure and health inequities. We projected the mortality impacts among low-income residents of leveraging an existing 10% affordable housing target as a case study of desegregation policy. We simulated movement into newly allocated housing, quantified changes in six ambient environmental exposures, and used exposure-response functions to estimate deaths averted. Across 1000 simulations, in one year, we found on average 169 (95% CI: 84, 255) deaths averted from changes in greenness, 71 (49, 94) deaths averted from NO2, 9 (4, 14) deaths averted from noise, 1 (1,

Research has made clear that neighborhoods impact the health and well-being of their residents. A related strand of research shows that neighborhood disadvantage is geographically clustered. Because the neighborhoods of low-income and minority populations tend to be more disadvantaged, neighborhood conditions help explain racial and socioeconomic inequalities. These strands of research restrict processes of neighborhood influence to operate only within and between geographically contiguous neighbors. However, we are underestimating the role of neighborhood conditions in explaining inequality i

Composite indices of neighborhood-level social environment are frequently used in cancer research, but relationships among these indices have been seldom studied, especially in race-stratified analyses. We considered four census tract-level social indices: Neighborhood Deprivation Index (NDI; continuous, quartiles, and clusters); Yost (continuous, quartiles, and clusters); racialized-income Index of Concentration at the Extremes (ICE; continuous, quartiles, and clusters); and a care access metric (categorical). These were linked to the Carolina Breast Cancer Study, a cohort of 2998 adults (50%

BACKGROUND: Little is known about the role of residential segregation in the treatment and outcomes of small cell lung cancer (SCLC), a highly recalcitrant disease, among non-Hispanic White (NHW) and non-Hispanic Black (NHB) patients.
METHODS: We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database to identify men and women diagnosed with SCLC from January 2007 to December 2015 (n = 38,393). An Index of Concentration at the Extremes was computed to measure county-level racialized economic segregation and categorized into Quartile 1 (most privileged: highest concentration of high-inco

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gentrification is a prevalent neighborhood development process in urban areas across the United States. Prior studies have identified the influence of gentrification on late-life health and quality of life, yet little is known about its relationship with food insecurity, an important public health issue for older adult populations. Using New York City as a case study, this study investigated associations between living in a gentrifying neighborhood and food insecurity, as well as the mediating roles of neighborhood environment factors-social cohesion, public transpor

BACKGROUND: Racial inequities exist in retention in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care and multilevel analyses are needed to contextualize and address these differences. Leveraging data from a multisite clinical cohort of people with HIV (PWH), we assessed the relationships between patient race and residential characteristics with missed HIV care visits.
METHODS: Medical record and patient-reported outcome (PRO; including mental health and substance-use measures) data were drawn from 7 participating Center for AIDS Research Network of Integrated Clinical Systems (CNICS) sites including N

Racial capitalism is a fundamental cause of the racial and socioeconomic inequities within the novel coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19) in the United States. The overrepresentation of Black death reported in Detroit, Michigan is a case study for this argument. Racism and capitalism mutually construct harmful social conditions that fundamentally shape COVID-19 disease inequities because they (a) shape multiple diseases that interact with COVID-19 to influence poor health outcomes; (b) affect disease outcomes through increasing multiple risk factors for poor, people of color, including racial resid

Disinvestment in segregated, low-income Black communities is rooted in structural racism and racial capitalism and contributes to racial health inequities. Virtual audits have been used to capture visible signs of neighborhood disinvestment, however, these methods have been primarily used and validated in dense urban cities in the Northeast and Western U.S. We used Google Street View to conduct virtual audits in the Jackson, Mississippi tri-county metropolitan area-a mid-sized, urban area in the U.S. South. Our approach engaged residents and community organizers in conversations to inform our

BACKGROUND: Residing in a disadvantaged neighborhood has been linked to increased mortality. However, the impact of residential segregation and social vulnerability on cause-specific mortality is understudied. Additionally, the circulating metabolic correlates of neighborhood sociodemographic environment remain unexplored. Therefore, we examined multiple neighborhood sociodemographic metrics, i.e., neighborhood deprivation index (NDI), residential segregation index (RSI), and social vulnerability index (SVI), with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer-specific mortality and cir

OBJECTIVES: Individual-level social determinant of health (SDOH) measures alone may insufficiently explain disparities in edentulism among seniors. Therefore, the authors examined the correlation of census tract-level SDOH and residential racial segregation measures with edentulism in Californian adults aged ≥65 years old.
METHODS: Explanatory variables were obtained from Healthy Places Index (HPI), the National Cancer Institute and diversitydatakids.org. The edentulism outcome variable was obtained from CDC's PLACES small area estimates from the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Syste

We explore alternative hypotheses regarding the association between activity space racial composition and risk behavior among Black-identifying urban youth. Racial isolation perspectives argue that exposure to Black segregated neighborhoods limits access to mainstream institutions and influence, increasing participation in risk behavior (violence, delinquency, and substance/alcohol use). An alternative compelled mobility perspective argues that Black youth spend a substantial amount of time in low proportion Black, largely white neighborhoods seeking organizational resources typically less ava

BACKGROUND: Social factors may enhance health effects of air pollution, yet empirical support is inconsistent. The interaction of social and environmental factors may only be evident with long-term exposures and outcomes that reflect long-term disease development.
METHODS: We used cardiac magnetic resonance imaging data from the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis to assess left-ventricular mass index (LVMI) and left-ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). We assigned residential concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), oxides of nitrogen, and nitrogen dioxide in the year 2000 to ea

IMPORTANCE: Studies elucidating determinants of residential neighborhood-level health inequities are needed.
OBJECTIVE: To quantify associations of structural racism indicators with neighborhood prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD), diabetes, and hypertension.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study used public data (2012-2018) and deidentified electronic health records (2017-2018) to describe the burden of structural racism and the prevalence of CKD, diabetes, and hypertension in 150 residential neighborhoods in Durham County, North Carolina, from US census block
