Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used as a non-invasive method to evaluate heart rate (HR) regulation by the parasympathetic and sympathetic divisions of the autonomic nervous system. In this review, we discuss the effect of resistance exercise both acutely and after training on HRV in healthy individuals and in those with diseases characterized by autonomic dysfunction, such as hypertension and fibromyalgia. HR recovery after exercise is influenced by parasympathetic reactivation and sympathetic recovery to resting levels. Therefore, examination of HRV in response to acute exercise yield

The aim was to study whether whole body vibration (WBV) combined with conventional resistance training (CRT) induces a higher increase in neuromuscular and hormonal measures compared with CRT or WBV, respectively. Twenty-eight young men were randomized in three groups; squat only (S), combination of WBV and squat (S+V) and WBV only (V). S+V performed six sets with eight repetitions with corresponding eight repetition maximum (RM) loads on the vibrating platform, whereas S and V performed the same protocol without WBV and resistance, respectively. Maximal isometric voluntary contraction (MVC) w

Osteoporosis is a major public health problem that is characterized by low bone mass and increased susceptibility to fractures, primarily of the hip, spine, and wrist. It is estimated to cause 1.5 million fractures annually in the United States in people aged 50 yr and older. Physical activity, particularly weight-bearing exercise, is thought to provide the mechanical stimuli or "loading" important for the maintenance and improvement of bone health, whereas physical inactivity has been implicated in bone loss and its associated health costs. Both aerobic and resistance training exercise can pr

Background/Objectives: Higher energy and carbohydrate intakes have been hypothesized to enhance resistance training adaptations, yet empirical evidence remains mixed. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether supplemental carbohydrate-energy intake improves muscle hypertrophy and strength. Methods: Twenty resistance-trained men (26.7 ± 4.9 years old, 9.7 ± 6.1 years training experience) completed a quasi-randomized, double-blinded, counterbalanced crossover trial. Participants consumed either a daily protein-only supplement (30 g protein, 4 g carbohydrate) or a daily protein-plus-ca

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated positive effects of acute vibration exercise on concentric strength and power, but few have observed the effects of vibration exposure on resistance training. The aim of this study was to verify the effects of whole body vibration applied to the chest via hands on bench press resistance training in trained and untrained individuals.
METHODS: Nineteen participants (10 recreationally trained bodybuilders and 9 untrained students) performed two randomized sessions of resistance training on separate days. Each strength session consisted of 3 bench pr

Individuals with neurological disorders often exhibit altered manual dexterity and muscle weakness in their upper limbs. These motor impairments with tremor lead to severe difficulties in performing Activities of Daily Living (ADL). There is a critical need for ADL-focused robotic training that improves individual's strength when engaging with dexterous ADL tasks. This research introduces a new approach to training ADLs by employing a novel robotic rehabilitation system, Spherical Parallel INstrument for Daily Living Emulation (SPINDLE), which incorporates Virtual Reality (VR) to simulate ADL

The aim of this study was to evaluate effectiveness and safety of resistance training (RT). Data were retrieved from Medline, EMBASE, PubMed, CINAHL and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (Central) databases from inception to April 2020. Quantitative studies on RT for muscle strength, lean body mass, cardiopulmonary function, metabolism, quality of life, and pain in burned children were included in this study. Twelve RCTs (379 patients) were identified. Meta-analysis showed RT significant increase in muscle strength [SMD = 2.18, 95% CI (0.79, 3.56), p = 0.002]. However, training sh

BACKGROUND: Some individuals, even when heavily exposed to an infectious tuberculosis patient, develop neither active nor latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). This 'early clearance' of Mycobacterium tuberculosis is associated with a history of bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination. As BCG vaccination can boost innate immune responses through a process termed 'trained immunity', we hypothesize that BCG-induced trained innate immunity contributes to early clearance of M. tuberculosis.
OBJECTIVES: We describe the epidemiological evidence and biological concepts of early clearance and train

OBJECTIVES: Jumping ability has been identified as a key factor that influences the performance of badminton athletes. Autoregulatory progressive resistance exercise (APRE) and velocity-based resistance training (VBRT) are commonly used approaches to enhance muscle strength and have been shown to accurately monitor the development of explosive power to improve jumping ability. This study aims to investigate the effects of APRE and VBRT on badminton athletes' jumping ability and to provide practical insights into improving their jumping performance during competitions.

BACKGROUND: While aerobic, resistance, and balance training are commonly used to counteract age-related declines in cognitive and physical functions, evidence for cognitive benefits of metabolic training (i.e., aerobic, resistance) remains inconsistent. In contrast, motor training (i.e., balance, coordination) involving higher task complexity may enhance cognition by engaging brain regions associated with cognitive control processes. Resistance training on unstable devices, also referred to as metastable resistance training (MRT), has been reported to increase metabolic, coordinative, and cogn

INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular risk increase after ovarian deprivation has been extensively demonstrated by our research group through cardiovascular autonomic analysis. Interventions involving different types of exercises, such as resistance exercises or combined exercises (aerobic and resistance) have been widely recommended to prevent or minimize neuromuscular decline in postmenopausal women, which is aggravated by a sedentary lifestyle. Experimentally, the cardiovascular effects of resistance or combined training, as well as comparison between aerobic, resistance, and combined training, in o

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop an objective, repetition-based method for inter-set rest adjustment in resistance training (RT), addressing limitations of fixed and self-selected intervals.
HYPOTHESIS: The adjustable protocol would yield greater repetition volume, higher velocity, and lower fatigue than the fixed protocol, with reduced time cost compared with the self-selected protocol.
STUDY DESIGN: Crossover randomized trial.
LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 2.
METHODS: A total of 20 young adults completed 3 RT protocols in randomized order: fixed, self-selected, and adjustable. Each pro

BACKGROUND: Treatment of sarcoma often leads to serious long-term health consequences, including decreased physical functioning. Supervised progressive resistance training (PRT) has been shown to improve physical functioning in survivors of carcinomas. We conducted a single-arm, pre-post study to assess the feasibility of remote delivery of a supervised, individualized resistance training program in sarcoma survivors.
METHODS: Survivors of extremity sarcomas who were more than 2 years from final sarcoma treatment with no evidence of recurrent disease were eligible. Participants followed a PRT
