Risk factors of vestibular migraine-related brain white matter lesions.

OBJECTIVE AND PURPOSE: Migraine is related to white matter lesions (WMLs), and attack frequency and duration in migraine patients are thought to increase WMLs. However, the relationship between vestibular migraine (VM) and WMLs remains unclear. This study explored the risk factors for WMLs in VM patients and provided a basis for the prevention of WMLs in VM patients. METHODS: A large single-center cross-sectional study of patients with VM was conducted. None of the patients had comorbidities, such as hypertension and diabetes, or adverse lifestyle habits (smoking and drinking). All patients w

Focus correction in MR thermography for increased targeting precision during focused ultrasound procedures.

PURPOSE: Accurate targeting during MR-guided focused ultrasound (FUS) procedures is essential for effective treatment to be achieved. However, spatial discrepancies frequently arise between the planned target and the observed thermal hotspot on proton resonance frequency (PRF)-based MR thermometry because of temperature-induced artifacts. This study aims to correct such displacements caused by chemical shift and k-space center offset. METHODS: Spatial misregistration was addressed using a two-step correction approach. The first step corrected pixel-wise displacements attributed to temperature

Distinguishing healthy from otosclerotic ears: effect of probe-tone frequency on static immittance.

The diagnostic utility of static immittance (SI) with respect to distinguishing healthy from otosclerotic ears was investigated at different probe-tone frequencies in 68 healthy ears and 36 ears with surgically confirmed otosclerosis. Because one effect of otosclerosis is to shift the resonant frequency of the middle ear to higher values as a result of increased stiffness of the middle ear system, it was hypothesized that SI measured at higher probe-tone frequencies may provide a better distinction between healthy and otosclerotic ears. As expected, the results of this study indicate that SI m

Asymmetric Tongs Induced Frequency Splitting Achieving Simultaneous Two-Component Gas Sensing with a Single Quartz Tuning Fork in Two Independent Resonant Modes.

In this paper, a highly sensitive light-induced thermoelastic spectroscopy (LITES)-based dual-gas simultaneous sensor by utilizing an asymmetric quartz tuning fork (AQTF) was reported for the first time. Using a standard commercial QTF as the substrate, the AQTF was constructed through a mechanical assembly-based tuning method. The resonant frequency of the AQTF was theoretically derived, and its resonance characteristics and modal behavior were investigated via finite-element analysis. The results indicate that by introducing an asymmetric configuration, the standard commercial QTF achieves c

Resonant Acoustic Rheometry to Measure Coagulation Kinetics in Hemophilia A and Healthy Plasma: A Novel Viscoelastic Method.

Compared with conventional coagulation tests and factor-specific assays, viscoelastic hemostatic assays (VHAs) can provide a more thorough evaluation of clot formation and lysis but have several limitations including clot deformation. In this proof-of-concept study, we test a noncontact technique, termed resonant acoustic rheometry (RAR), for measuring the kinetics of human plasma coagulation. Specifically, RAR utilizes a dual-mode ultrasound technique to induce and detect surface oscillation of blood samples without direct physical contact and measures the resonant frequency of the surface os

Dynamics of human lumbar intervertebral joints. Experimental and finite-element investigations.

To improve our understanding of the dynamic characteristics of the human lumbar spine, both experimental and finite-element methods are required. The experimental methods included measurement of the axial steady state response, resonant frequencies, and damping of seven lumbar motion segments under an upper-body mass of 40 kg. The influence of the presence of posterior elements and different magnitudes of compression preload on the response was also studied. To supplement the measurements, linear and nonlinear, axisymmetric, and three-dimensional finite-element models of a L2-L3 disc-vertebra

Analysis of time-varying signals using continuous wavelet and synchrosqueezed transforms.

The continuous wavelet transform (CWT) has played a key role in the analysis of time-frequency information in many different fields of science and engineering. It builds on the classical short-time Fourier transform but allows for variable time-frequency resolution. Yet, interpretation of the resulting spectral decomposition is often hindered by smearing and leakage of individual frequency components. Computation of instantaneous frequencies, combined by frequency reassignment, may then be applied by highly localized techniques, such as the synchrosqueezing transform and ConceFT, in order to r

Visual information processing of faces in body dysmorphic disorder.

CONTEXT: Body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) is a severe psychiatric condition in which individuals are preoccupied with perceived appearance defects. Clinical observation suggests that patients with BDD focus on details of their appearance at the expense of configural elements. This study examines abnormalities in visual information processing in BDD that may underlie clinical symptoms. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether patients with BDD have abnormal patterns of brain activation when visually processing others' faces with high, low, or normal spatial frequency information. DESIGN: Case-control st

Effect of Stiffening the Printed Circuit Board in the Fatigue Life of the Solder Joint.

Predictive analysis of the life of an electronic package requires a sequence of processes involving: (i) development of a finite element (FE) model, (ii) correlation of the FE model using experimental data, and (iii) development of a local model using the correlated FE model. The life of the critical components is obtained from the local model and is usually compared to the experimental results. Although the specifics of such analyses are available in the literature, a comparison among them and against the same electronic package with different user printed circuit board (PCB) thicknesses does

Sensitivity in phononic crystal sensors via super asymmetric coupled-cavity engineering.

This work presents a one-dimensional super-asymmetric coupled-cavity phononic crystal sensor for concentration-dependent liquid analysis using an ethanol-water mixture as the sensing medium. The proposed structure consists of periodic acoustic mirrors surrounding an asymmetric coupled-defect region expressed as Air∣(A/B)7∣CL∣D∣CR∣(B/A)7 ∣Air, where the asymmetry is introduced through unequal coupling cavity thicknesses. The structural asymmetry modifies the acoustic confinement behavior inside the liquid defect cavity and enhances the resonance sensitivity to concentration variations. The tran

Multi-Resonant Metamaterial Absorber for Electromagnetic Absorption in S-, C-, X-, and Ku- Bands.

This work introduces a compact multi-resonant metamaterial absorber designed to achieve efficient electromagnetic absorption over several microwave frequency bands. The proposed configuration is based on a hybrid resonator arrangement that promotes strong electromagnetic interaction and enables multiple resonant modes within a single unit cell. Consequently, six distinct absorption peaks are obtained at 2.4, 5.21, 6.88, 9.77, 12.61, and 14.99 GHz, covering S-, C-, X-, and Ku-band applications. The absorber exhibits high absorption performance, exceeding 97% across most operating frequencies an

Modulatory mechanisms underlying high-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS): A combined stochastic resonance and equivalent noise approach.

BACKGROUND: High-frequency transcranial random noise stimulation (hf-tRNS) is a neuromodulatory technique consisting of the application of alternating current at random intensities and frequencies. hf-tRNS induces random neural activity in the system that may boost the sensitivity of neurons to weak inputs. Stochastic resonance is a nonlinear phenomenon whereby the addition of an optimal amount of noise results in performance enhancement, whereas further noise increments impair signal detection or discrimination. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess whether modulatory effects of hf-t

The use of a custom mode electron capture detector to determine mixing ratios of environmental tracers: Sulfur hexafluoride, chlorotrifluoromethane and bromotrifluoromethane.

Atmospheric concentrations of anthropogenic trace gases, such as sulfur hexafluoride, SF6, chlorotrifluoromethane, CF3Cl, and bromotrifluoromethane, CF3Br, are increasing. Their long lifetimes and limited chemical reactivity make them attractive environmental tracers for hydrology and oceanography. While ambient SF6 concentrations can be readily measured using GC-ECD, the simultaneous analysis of CF3Cl and CF3Br is hampered due to their low ECD sensitivity. The response of a commercial ECD for those gases was enhanced using the resonance detection mode which is based on shifting the mean energ
