Comparison of 2 methods for sterilization of filtering facepiece respirators worn for extended periods during the COVID-19 pandemic: An experimental laboratory study.

BACKGROUND: During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a shortage of filtering facepiece respirators (FFR), leading to prolonged use and reuse of FFRs. METHODS: FFRs were collected in 3 hospitals after extended use (up to 15 or 30days). We assessed the physical characteristics and filtration levels of worn FFRs, before sterilization. Respirators that achieved at least 94% filtration of aerosol particles, nasal clip still attached, had no tears, had preserved elastic bands, and had no dirt were randomized to receive or not receive cleaning before being submitted to hydrogen peroxide plasma gas st

Diagnostic performance of respirators for collection and detection of SARS-CoV-2.

Respirators, called as face mask, have been used to protect the wearer from the outside harmful air environment and prevent any virus from being released to neighbors from potentially infected exhaled breath. The antiviral effectiveness of respirators has not only been researched scientifically, but has also become a global issue due to society's obligation to wear respirators. In this paper, we report the results of a study on the collection and detection of viruses contained in exhaled breath using respirators. The inner electrostatic filter was carefully selected for virus collection becaus

Recent advances in interfaces for non-invasive ventilation: from bench studies to practical issues.

The interface is the defining element of non-invasive ventilation (NIV). Nowadays different types of interfaces, which differ in terms of shape, mechanical properties and comfort, are available, and their choice and fitting is a key element of NIV success. In the last decade, larger masks covering the entire face and specifically designed helmets have been developed for delivering NIV, theoretically improving comfort and patient tolerance. Recent studies have shown that, despite marked heterogeneity in mask internal volume and compliance, the dynamic dead space and, above all, the clinical eff

Use of respiratory protection among responders at the World Trade Center site--New York City, September 2001.

The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) on September 11,2001, created an occupational health and safety challenge for New York City (NYC) firefighters and rescue workers responding to the disaster. Immediate respiratory hazards included explosions, fire, falling debris, and dust clouds containing particulate matter comprised of pulverized building materials. Ongoing risks included lingering particulate matter in the air and intermittent combustion products from initial and persistent fires beneath the rubble pile. Because the nature and extent of exposures in disaster situations

Biological monitoring of wood dust exposure in nasal lavage by high-performance liquid chromatography.

A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for biomonitoring of occupational wood dust exposure based on nasal lavage as a biomonitoring matrix was developed. Gallic acid (GA) was chosen as the indicator compound for oak dust exposure. From the chromatographic profile of ash dust, four peaks were chosen as indicator compounds. Phenolic indicator compounds were analysed by HPLC. Personal dust samples and corresponding nasal lavage samples were collected from 16 workers exposed to oak dust and six to ash dust. The dust concentrations in the workers' breathing zone varied between 0.7

Strategies for the prevention of a successful biological warfare aerosol attack.

Biological warfare (BW) aerosol attacks are different from chemical attacks in that they may provide no warning/all clear signals that allow the soldier to put on or remove his M17/M40 protective mask. Methods are now being perfected to detect a BW aerosol cloud using an airborne (helicopter) pulsed laser system to scan the lower altitudes upwind from a troop concentration of corps size, and to sample and analyze the nature of the aerosol within a brief time interval. This system has certain limitations and vulnerabilities, since it is designed specifically to detect a line-type aerosol attack

Safe spontaneous breathing with helmet noninvasive ventilation in acute hypoxemic respiratory failure.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Helmet noninvasive ventilation (NIV) has gained attention for the management of hypoxemic patients, owing to physiological and potential clinical benefits. We summarize the recent advances on the topic. RECENT FINDINGS: Compared to facemasks, helmets facilitate application of higher positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) for prolonged treatments: this improves oxygenation and may mitigate injurious inflation patterns related to lung heterogeneity. The large, highly compliant interface reduces ventilator triggering performance, causing pressure support to be partially out o

Assessing the filtration efficiency and regulatory status of N95s and nontraditional filtering face-piece respirators available during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has severely disrupted supply chains for many types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), particularly surgical N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs; "masks"). As a consequence, an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the FDA has allowed use of industrial N95 respirators and importation of N95-type masks manufactured to international standards; these include KN95 masks from China and FFP2 masks from the European Union. METHODS: We conducted a survey of masks in the inventory of major academic medical centers in Boston, MA to determine provenance and

Microwave- and heat-based decontamination of N95 filtering facepiece respirators: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: In pandemics such as COVID-19, shortages of personal protective equipment are common. One solution may be to decontaminate equipment such as facemasks for reuse. AIM: To collect and synthesize existing information on decontamination of N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFRs) using microwave and heat-based treatments, with special attention to impacts on mask function (aerosol penetration, airflow resistance), fit, and physical traits. METHODS: A systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42020177036) of literature available from Medline, Embase, Global Health, and other sources was conduc

The effect of co-impregnated acids on the performance of Zn-based broad spectrum respirator carbons.

Impregnated activated carbons (IACs) that are used in multi-gas respirator applications usually contain copper and/or zinc impregnants. Co-impregnating with properly selected acids can improve the distribution of the metallic impregnant on the carbon and improve the gas adsorption capacity of the IAC. In this work a comparative study of some common acids co-impregnated with a zinc nitrate (Zn(NO(3))(2)) precursor is performed. The IACs were heated in an inert atmosphere at temperatures which promoted the thermal decomposition of Zn(NO(3))(2) to zinc oxide (ZnO). The gas adsorption properties o

Characterization of firefighter exposures during fire overhaul.

Previous studies have characterized firefighter exposures during fire suppression. However, minimal information is available regarding firefighter exposures during overhaul, when firefighters look for hidden fire inside attics, ceilings, and walls, often without respiratory protection. A comprehensive air monitoring study was conducted to characterize City of Phoenix firefighter exposures during the overhaul phase of 25 structure fires. Personal samples were collected for aldehydes; benzene; toluene; ethyl benzene; xylene; hydrochloric acid; polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PNA); respirable

Environmental study of firefighters.

A study of firefighter exposures was undertaken at the request of the U.S. Fire Administration. This work was part of a larger study which included field evaluation of the performance of the self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) worn by firefighters during structural firefighting. Measurements were made for a variety of contaminants including CO, CO2, benzene, HCN, HCl, H2SO4, HF, acrolein, CH4, formaldehyde and PNAs. Many of the analyses were performed by collection of bag samples followed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy using a field mobile spectrometer. Measurements were also

Analysis of SteraMist ionized hydrogen peroxide technology in the sterilization of N95 respirators and other PPE.

The COVID-19 pandemic has led to widespread shortages of personal protective equipment (PPE) for healthcare workers, including of N95 masks (filtering facepiece respirators; FFRs). These masks are intended for single use but their sterilization and subsequent reuse has the potential to substantially mitigate shortages. Here we investigate PPE sterilization using ionized hydrogen peroxide (iHP), generated by SteraMist equipment (TOMI; Frederick, MD), in a sealed environment chamber. The efficacy of sterilization by iHP was assessed using bacterial spores in biological indicator assemblies. Afte

A spraying applicator device is not required for efficacy of a live intranasal respiratory vaccine in young calves, which improves user convenience.

Almost all bovine intranasal respiratory vaccines require a spraying device, but there are no published reports which prove the necessity of this. The objective of this investigation was to compare the efficacy of the Bovilis® INtranasal RSP™ Live vaccine when applied with or without an (intra)nasal spraying device. This vaccine contains live, attenuated strains of bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) and bovine parainfluenza virus type 3 (BPI3V) and is licensed to protect young cattle against respiratory infections with wild-type field isolates of these viruses. Two efficacy studies, for

A pilot survey of Southeastern firefighters: Safety practices, use of protective gear, and injury.

INTRO: There were over 60 firefighter line of duty deaths and roughly 30,000 injuries in the United States in 2016. Modern thermoprotective gear has reduced the risks firefighters face from both thermal and inhalation injury, but must be used properly to be effective. The purpose of this study is to examine gear use and associated injury in firefighters. METHODS: Surveys were distributed with questions about demographics, gear usage, and maintenance practices. If previously injured, firefighters described the injury, treatment, and recovery. RESULTS: Of the 50 surveys distributed, 37 were re
