[The specific features of the cocirculation of influenza viruses in the 2010-2011 postpandemic period according to the results of activities of the D. I. Ivanovsky Research Institute of Virology, Ministry of Health and Social Development of Russia].

The paper gives the results of monitoring the circulation of influenza viruses in the 2010-2011 season, that covers the second year of circulation of pandemic A(H1N1)v virus strains, and their interaction with seasonal A (H3N2) and B strains. Unlike the previous season, the beginning of an increase in morbidity was recorded in January 2011; its peak in the most of contiguous areas was noted at 5-7 weeks of 2011, with its further decline to threshold levels at week 11 of 2011. Preschool and school children were most involved in the epidemic process. Three influenza virus strains (A(H1N1)v, A(H3

Seasonal pattern in childhood viral lower respiratory tract infections in Melbourne.

Respiratory syncytial virus and parainfluenza viruses are the major pathogens in acute lower respiratory infection in infants and younger children. They show distinct seasonal patterns. An annual epidemic of respiratory syncytial virus infection is seen in Melbourne and this coincides with the coldest months of the year. Parainfluenza virus Type 1, the most frequent cause of laryngotracheobronchitis, occurs as an autumn epidemic every second year. Parainfluenza virus Types 2 and 3 are present most years and do not show a clear seasonal pattern.

Association of bovine respiratory syncytial virus with atypical interstitial pneumonia in feedlot cattle.

Thirty-three cattle with fatal respiratory tract disease were examined for gross and histologic lesions and for the presence of viral and bacterial agents in the lungs. Fifteen cattle had lesions characteristic of atypical interstitial pneumonia (AIP), and 18 had other respiratory tract diseases, including infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, shipping fever pneumonia, bronchopneumonia, pulmonary abscess, and edema of the trachea. Gross necropsy findings in the cattle with AIP were uncollapsed and emphysematous lungs; histopathologic findings included interstitial edema, thickening of alveolar wa

[Experimental infection of lambs with strains of the bovine respiratory syncytial virus].

Lambs were successfully infected with bovine strains of a respiratory syncytial virus. When the Nomi reference strain and the local Antonovo strain of the RSV were used i/v and via the trachea the animals reacted on the 3rd to 5th day with dizziness, dyspnea, conjunctivitis, nasal discharges, etc., more strongly manifested with the use of the Antonovo strain. The temperature reaction started on the 3rd day and receded on the 7th day, with a second peak on the 8h day. Serologically, RSV-antibodies were released on the 14th day, and that correlated in dependence on the severity of the clinical m

[Indices of the humoral response to respiratory syncytial virus infection in children with acute bronchitis].

Examinations of 30 children with acute bronchitis have revealed a respiratory syncytial (RS) viral infection in 18. A reduced response to RS virus was seen in patients with bronchitis complicated by obstruction, in contrast to that in cases without obstruction. Humoral response to this virus was reduced and delayed in younger children as against that in elder ones. Even high levels of specific IgG did not result in vitro neutralization of RS virus.

Experimental respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia in young calves: microbiologic and immunofluorescent findings.

Young calves were inoculated with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) intranasally or by a combined intranasal and intratracheal route and were killed between postinoculation (initial) days (PID) 1 and 14. Viral antigens were detected by immunofluorescence in nasopharyngeal cells from calves killed between PID 2 and 10. Evidence of infection of the trachea and lungs with RSV was obtained by immunofluorescence and virus isolation in calves inoculated by the combined route, but not in calves inoculated intranasally. Within the lungs, RSV antigens were observed in epithelial cells of bronchioli and

Atopy predisposing to acute bronchiolitis during an epidemic of respiratory syncytial virus.

Thirty-one infants admitted to hospital with acute bronchiolitis during an epidemic of respiratory syncytial virus were compared with a control group of 32 infants to establish whether the two groups differed in atopic background. Past history of respiratory illness, eczema, and present reactions to skin testing differed significantly between the two groups. Thus, infants with acute bronchiolitis had a significantly higher atopic predisposition than the controls.

Non-productive paramyxovirus infection: Nariva virus infection in hamsters.

The pathogenesis of infection with Nariva virus (NV)--recently classified as a paramyxovirus--was studied in the hamster, an animal closely related to the natural host. Intracranial inoculation of suckling hamsters produces an acute necrotizing encephalitis with large amounts of infectious virus and virus antigen in the brain. In contrast, weanling hamsters have only small amounts of infectious virus and only early in the disease, when they are well; later, when clinically ill, they have a non-productive infection with continuing evidence of viral antigen, but no detectable infectious virus. Viral infections of the respiratory tract in hospitalized children. A study from Oslo during a 90 months' period.

A diagnosis of 979 respiratory viral infections was made in hospitalized children. Respiratory syncytial virus greatly out-numbered the other viruses: it caused 58% of the total virus infections and occurred in winter epidemics. Influenza A and B virus occurred during late winter and spring, rhinovirus had a seasonal distribution towards spring and autumn, whereas adenovirus types 1, 2 and 5 had no distinct seasonal distribution. Whereas respiratory syncytial virus were mainly associated with bronchiolitis and adenovirus type 7 with pneumonia, rhinovirus infections were most often found in chi

Pneumonias in adults due to mycoplasma, chlamydiae, and viruses.

Pneumonias in adults due to mycoplasma, chlamydiae, and viruses are a common clinical problem. These microorganisms contribute to the etiologies in 6-35% of all cases of pneumonia and are the sole pathogens in 1-17% of hospitalized cases. Important trends and developments in the field include the emergence of a Chlamydia psittaci strain (TWAR) that is passaged from human to human, causes a mycoplasma-like illness, and that is relatively resistant to erythromycin, the recognition of respiratory syncytial virus as a pathogen in nursing home outbreaks and in immunosuppressed adults, the continuin

Paramyxovirus disease in racing pigeons. Clinical aspects and immunization. A report from the Netherlands.

Since 1981 a highly contagious viral disease causing high morbidity and low mortality in racing pigeons has spread over Europe. The virus belongs to the avian paramyxovirus sero group I. Clinical signs include watery droppings, polydypsia and neurologic signs in a high proportion of infected animals. Definitive diagnosis can be made by virus isolation in cell cultures or chicken embryos, and virus identification by haemagglutination and haemagglutination inhibition (HI) tests. The HI test, using sera from suspected animals, is a useful clinical tool to confirm the diagnosis. The most important

Immunohistochemical evaluation of lymphocyte subpopulations in sheep pneumonia caused by RSV, PIV3, and their coinfections.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV‑3) are important pathogens causing respiratory infections in humans and animals worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the presence of RSV and PIV‑3 in lambs with pneumonia, including single and mixed infections, and to evaluate the role of different lymphocyte types in immunopathogenesis. The material consisted of lung samples from 100 lambs (aged 4-12 months) with pneumonia, collected between July and November 2024. PCR and immunohistochemistry (IHC) were used to detect viral presence, while hematoxylin-eosin (HE) stai

Clinical features of parainfluenza infections among young children hospitalized for acute respiratory illness in Amman, Jordan.

BACKGROUND: Parainfluenza virus (PIV) is a leading cause of acute respiratory illness (ARI) in children. However, few studies have characterized the clinical features and outcomes associated with PIV infections among young children in the Middle East. METHODS: We conducted hospital-based surveillance for ARI among children < 2 years of age in a large referral hospital in Amman, Jordan. We systematically collected clinical data and respiratory specimens for pathogen detection using reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. We compared clinical features of PIV-associated ARI among indivi

Parainfluenza Virus Infection.

Human parainfluenza viruses (HPIVs) are single-stranded, enveloped RNA viruses of the Paramyoviridaie family. There are four serotypes which cause respiratory illnesses in children and adults. HPIVs bind and replicate in the ciliated epithelial cells of the upper and lower respiratory tract and the extent of the infection correlates with the location involved. Seasonal HPIV epidemics result in a significant burden of disease in children and account for 40% of pediatric hospitalizations for lower respiratory tract illnesses (LRTIs) and 75% of croup cases. Parainfluenza viruses are associated wi

[Severe respiratory syncytial virus infections. Study of 87 infants hospitalized in an epidemic].

During a winter epidemic, 87 infants were admitted to Necker-Enfants-Malades hospital with a severe respiratory syncitial virus (RSV) infection. These infants fell into two groups: 37 infants without any medical history and 50 showing an underlying pathology (immune deficiencies, heart disease, CNS disorders, digestive malformations, allergic manifestations). Of the 37 infants with no medical history, most were below the age of 6 months and the RSV infection was manifested clinically by bronchiolitis or bronchitis. Most of the infants in the other group were more than 6 months of age and prese

Respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia in Friesian calves: physiological findings.

Clinical, serological and physiological values were measured during and after naturally occurring respiratory syncytial virus pneumonia in four Friesian calves weighing between 120 and 160 kg. Clinical and serological findings were in agreement with the description of spontaneous calf pneumonia, associated with respiratory syncytial virus infection. Pulmonary function values, recorded one, eight, 15 and 57 days after the clinical onset of the disease, provided good evidence that the clinical syndrome associated with respiratory syncytial virus infection in Friesian cattle is at first an acute
