[The resting heart rate].

Assessment of resting heart rate is frequently performed and is easy, reliable and inexpensive. Heart rate is used in many algorithms to assess the prognosis of acutely ill patients. Elevated resting heart rate is independently related to the development of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and premature all-cause mortality. Adding heart rate to cardiovascular prediction models does not lead to improved prediction of vascular events or mortality. Beta blockers and non-dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers decrease heart rate (and blood pressure) and lower the risk of premature mortali

Botulinum Toxin-Based Study: Histological Changes in the Rabbit Vocal Folds and Construction of the Voice Rest Model With Different Rest Durations.

There is currently no unified standard for optimal voice rest following vocal fold surgery, and inconsistencies in related clinical trials highlight the necessity of basic scientific research. However, existing animal models for voice rest have significant limitations, and no systematic establishment of a series of animal models with varying durations of voice rest that align with clinical trends has been achieved. This study was designed in two parts. In the first part, 1 U of botulinum toxin type A was injected into the unilateral thyroarytenoid muscle of rabbits, using hematoxylin-eosin sta

National Football League Players Have Higher Rates of Knee Extensor Mechanism Tears During Short and Normal Rest Weeks versus Long Rest Weeks.

Lower extremity injuries, particularly knee injuries, in National Football League (NFL) players are common. Extensor mechanism ruptures often require season-ending surgery. These ruptures, involving structures like the quadriceps and patellar tendons, are caused by powerful movements that overload the knee. Research on NFL injury risk factors, including time between games, is growing, but studies on rest periods and knee injuries have shown mixed results and are limited in scope. No prior research has specifically examined extensor mechanism tears in relation to short, normal, or long rest per

Resting high-frequency heart rate variability is related to resting brain perfusion.

We examined the neural correlates of resting cardiac vagal activity in a sample of 432 participants (206 male; 61 African American; mean age 42 years). Pulsed arterial spin labeling was used to quantify whole brain and regional cerebral blood flow at rest. High-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) was used to measure cardiac vagal activity at rest. The primary aim was to determine whether brain regions implicated in regulating cardiac vagal reactions were also related to cardiac vagal activity at rest, and whether these associations varied by sex or race. Brain areas previously related to

The effect of post-learning rest on false memory.

Like sleep, a brief period of eyes-closed waking rest following encoding can improve memory. But in addition to quantitatively strengthening memory, sleep also qualitatively transforms memory. In one example of this effect, sleep has been reported to promote the formation of false memory, perhaps as a result of preferentially strengthening gist memory over memory for veridical detail. Here, we tested whether a period of eyes-closed waking rest, like sleep, affects the formation of false memories. We hypothesized that rest would increase false memory in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradi

Breathless at rest: a paradoxical platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome variant.

Platypnea-orthodeoxia syndrome (POS) is a rare and underdiagnosed clinical syndrome classically characterised by positional dyspnea (platypnea) and arterial oxygen desaturation (orthodeoxia) while upright, which improves in the supine position. There are no known cases of a POS variant where oxygenation improved during exercise and in the upright position, but worsened at rest and while supine. We present a novel case of a man in his mid-70s with symptoms and oxygen saturations paradoxical to classic POS, who was found to have a right-to-left shunt across a patent foramen ovale (PFO) with norm

Radiographical Changes after Ureteral Rest for Robotic Ureteral Reconstruction.

Introduction: We evaluate radiographical changes involved with the implementation of ureteral rest before robotic ureteral reconstruction (RUR) for the management of ureteral strictures. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed our single-institutional robotic ureteral surgery database to identify all consecutive patients who underwent ureteral rest before RUR for the surgical management of ureteral strictures between 1/2018 and 12/2022. Ureteral rest was defined as having the absence of hardware across a strictured segment before definitive surgical repair. All patients who obtained

Breathing Pattern Disorder: Translating Breathing at Rest to Exercise.

Breathing pattern disorder (BPD) is an abnormal pattern of ventilation and movements of the upper and lower ribcage and abdomen that results in a constellation of symptoms. This paper discusses the management of BPD from a technical standpoint. Since there is not a one-size-fits-all model for practice, we offer a toolbox approach to care with quick reference tables and diagrams that allow the practitioner to easily find treatement approaches that may suite their athlete. While this article uses the athlete as a reference for treatment, there is also a consideration for how to approach the co-m

Invasive haemodynamics at rest and exercise in cardiac amyloidosis.

AIMS: Our aim was to investigate haemodynamics at rest and during exercise in patients with transthyretin cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM) in light of the 2022 European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and European Respiratory Society (ERS) guidelines on pulmonary hypertension (PH). METHODS AND RESULTS: We performed right heart catheterization (RHC) in 57 subjects with ATTR-CM. The proportion of patients with PH was 77% according to the 2022 guidelines versus 47% when applying the 2015 guidelines. Isolated post-capillary PH and combined pre- and post-capillary PH were most prevalent. Thirty-six patients u

Reference Probe for TcpO2 at Rest: A Systematic Review.

(1) Background: Transcutaneous oxygen pressure (TcpO2) is used to determine the severity of lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD). Many authors used a ratio of limb to chest TcpO2, also called the regional perfusion index (RPI), which should be independent of variations in oxygen delivery and reflective of local limb oxygen supply. The relevance of a reference probe-positioned TcpO2 electrode is debated. We aimed to review the relevance of the reference probe in previous studies using rest TcpO2. (2) Methods: We searched Medline and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials on 22 Se

Capturing the Rest: Inpatient Mammography for Nonadherent Hospitalized Women.

INTRODUCTION: More than a third of hospitalized women are overdue or nonadherent to breast cancer screening guidelines, and almost a third of them are also at high risk for developing breast cancer. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of coordinating inpatient breast cancer screening mammography for these women before their discharge from the hospital. METHODS: A prospective intervention study was conducted among 101 nonadherent women aged 50-74 years who were hospitalized to a general medicine service. Rest-Based Concussion Management of Pediatric Emergency Medicine Providers.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to survey pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) providers on their management of 2 hypothetical acute concussion scenarios. We hypothesized that most providers would recommend a management strategy based on cognitive and physical rest. METHODS: Fifty-nine percent (46/78) of PEM providers that were surveyed completed the study. The survey consisted of 2 clinical scenarios-a female patient with a mild concussion and a male patient with a moderate concussion. Practitioners were asked questions regarding how they would hypothetically manage these patients in terms of rec

Detecting Coronary Artery Disease Using Rest Seismocardiography and Gyrocardiography.

In this study, we present a non-invasive solution to identify patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) defined as ⩾50% stenosis in at least one coronary artery. The solution is based on the analysis of linear acceleration (seismocardiogram, SCG) and angular velocity (gyrocardiogram, GCG) of the heart recorded in the x, y, and z directional axes from an accelerometer/gyroscope sensor mounted on the sternum. The database was collected from 310 individuals through a multicenter study. The time-frequency features extracted from each SCG and GCG data channel were fed to a one-dimensional Convolu

Automated Detection of Rest Disruptions in Critically Ill Patients.

Sleep has been shown to be an indispensable and important component of patients' recovery process. Nonetheless, the sleep quality of patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is often low, due to factors such as noise, pain, and frequent nursing care activities. Frequent sleep disruptions by the medical staff and/or visitors at certain times might lead to disruption of the patient's sleep-wake cycle and can also impact the severity of pain. Examining the association between sleep quality and frequent visitation has been difficult, due to the lack of automated methods for visitation detection.

The unmet need for rapid epileptic seizure termination (REST).

Approximately 40% of epilepsy patients will continue to experience breakthrough seizures despite stable antiepileptic drug regimens. Rescue treatments have demonstrated efficacy and safety for select seizure emergencies. Outpatient administered intranasal and rectally delivered medications are regulatory approved for acute repetitive seizures (ARS), and injectable benzodiazepines are indicated for parenteral treatment of established status epilepticus. Despite these advances, no studies have been shown to abort an ongoing seizure following patient or caregiver home administration of therapy at

V2a Neurons Constrain Extradiaphragmatic Respiratory Muscle Activity at Rest.

Breathing requires precise control of respiratory muscles to ensure adequate ventilation. Neurons within discrete regions of the brainstem produce oscillatory activity to control the frequency of breathing. Less is understood about how spinal and pontomedullary networks modulate the activity of respiratory motor neurons to produce different patterns of activity during different behaviors (i.e., during exercise, coughing, swallowing, vocalizing, or at rest) or following disease or injury. Here, we use a chemogenetic approach to inhibit the activity of glutamatergic V2a neurons in the brainstem

REST overexpression in mice causes deficits in spontaneous locomotion.

Overexpression of REST has been implicated in brain tumors, ischemic insults, epilepsy, and movement disorders such as Huntington's disease. However, owing to the lack of a conditional REST overexpression animal model, the mechanism of action of REST overexpression in these disorders has not been established in vivo. We created a REST overexpression mouse model using the human REST (hREST) gene. Our results using these mice confirm that hREST expression parallels endogenous REST expression in embryonic mouse brains. Further analyses indicate that REST represses the dopamine receptor 2 (Drd2) g
