Diagnostic incidence and pitfalls of rete testis hyperplasia and hyaline globules in a multi-institutional study of 348 testicular germ cell tumors.

OBJECTIVES: The concept of rete hyperplasia with hyaline globules simulating testicular yolk sac tumor was first reported in a mostly retrospective review over 30 years ago. Nonetheless, we continue to encounter examples where this scenario resulted in misdiagnosis. Herein, we sought to investigate the incidence of rete hyperplasia/hyaline globules in germ cell tumors and their associated subtypes and hypothesize an etiology. METHODS: A consecutive series of 348 germ cell tumor orchiectomies was evaluated for the presence of rete hyperplasia and hyaline globules, with clinicopathologic featur

Unusual combination of bilateral testicular microlithiasis and tubular ectasia of the rete testis with left intra- and extratesticular varicocele in a 17-year-old boy.

We describe the rare combination of testicular microlithiasis, unilateral intra/extratesticular varicocele, and tubular ectasia of the rete testis in a 17-year-old boy who presented with testicular pain following a trauma. He had a prior history of undescended testis and orchiopexy in childhood. His workup included a normal abdominal ultrasound and a sperm analysis demonstrating a low sperm count with sperm dysmotility. A follow-up ultrasound was unchanged, and he has been managed conservatively. This combined set of findings has not been previously reported.

Adenocarcinoma of the Rete Testis With PI3K/AKT/mTOR Pathway Alteration and a Gene Expression Profile Resembling Papillary Renal Cell Carcinoma: A Case Report.

Adenocarcinoma of the rete testis (ACRT) is a rare, gland-forming neoplasm arising from rete testis epithelium and is typically associated with poor prognosis. Currently, our knowledge of ACRT has been limited to single reports and small series, and its molecular characteristics are largely unknown. We present a patient, whose scrotal tumor demonstrated a gene expression profile similar to that of papillary renal cell carcinoma (PRCC) and alteration of PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, thereby expanding our understanding of the genomic landscape of ACRT.

Comparative anatomy on the development of sperm transporting pathway between the testis and mesonephros.

The male genital tract is diverse among vertebrates, but its development remains unclear, especially in the rete region. In this study, we investigated the testis-mesonephros complex of rabbit, chicken, and frog (Xenopus tropicalis) by immunohistochemistry for markers such as Ad4BP/Sf-1 (gonadal somatic and rete cells in mammals) and Pax2 (mesonephric tubules), and performed a three-dimensional reconstruction. In all investigated animals, testis cords were bundled at the mesonephros side. Rete cells positive for Ad4BP/Sf-1 (rabbit) or Pax2 (chicken and frog) were clustered at the border region

In search of an efficient injection technique for future clinical application of spermatogonial stem cell transplantation: infusion of contrast dyes in isolated cadaveric human testes.

OBJECTIVE: To develop an efficient infusion technique for human spermatogonial stem cell transplantation. DESIGN: A mixture with ultrasonic contrast, computerized tomography (CT) contrast, and Chinese ink was injected into isolated human testes through different sites (the rete testis, the head of the epididymis, the deferent duct, and blind testicular infusion). Ultrasound transducer was used to visualize the injection site and to observe the flow of the mixture injected in the testes. Then, micro-CT scan was used to construct three-dimensional images, allowing the calculation of the testicu

[Personal experience with peroperative study of testicular blood flow in laparoscopic surgery of varicocele].

Although the authors did not detect in 27 patients operated since October 1996 laparoscopically for varicocele, although the spermatic artery was ligatured a deteriorated blood supply of the testis, they evaluated the blood flow through the spermatic artery in the rete testis by coloured Doppler mapping during temporary peroperative ligature of the spermatic artery. In 14 patients the occlusion did not cause any changes of the blood supply of the testis, in one patient during occlusion of the artery the Doppler signal in the rete testis disappeared, after release of the ligature the blood flow

Hidden diversity: Identification and characterisation of compartment-specific testicular macrophage populations.

Two major populations of resident macrophages have been identified in the mouse testis: interstitial tissue macrophages, characterised by high expression of CD206 and low or undetectable MHC class II antigen (MHCII) expression, and peritubular macrophages that generally lack CD206, but exhibit elevated MHCII. A morphometric analysis of macrophage subset marker antigens throughout the entire adult mouse testis was undertaken employing transgenic expression of the green fluorescent protein reporter at the locus of the Cx3cr1 gene (Cx3cr1gfp/+), and immunofluorescence localisation of F4/80, MHCII

Intratesticular spermatocele.

High resolution ultrasound has increased our awareness of benign testicular cysts that appear to arise from the intratesticular sperm conduit system of the intratesticular ducts of the mediastinum and rete testis. The location of these benign cysts in the area of the mediastinum and rete testis and the absence of signs of a germ cell tumor may permit testicle preservation. These benign cysts may contain sperm. We present a case of a benign sperm-containing cyst with visible communication to the rete testis, designated an intratesticular spermatocele and managed with testicle preservation.

Appendageal tumors and tumor-like lesions of the testis and paratestis: a 32-year experience at a single institution.

The testicular hilum and paratestis contain several embryologically diverse anatomic structures, including the spermatic cord, tunica vaginalis, epididymis, rete testis, and several other embryonic remnants. Several benign and malignant lesions arise from these morphologically distinct structures, and owing to their proximity, it is challenging to classify and subsequently stage these tumors. Herein, we conducted a retrospective review of the paratesticular appendageal and rete testis tumors and tumor-like lesions diagnosed at our department from 1985 to 2016. Soft-tissue lesions/tumors were e

High level of endostatin in epididymal epithelium: protection against primary malignancies in this organ?

Rete testis and epididymis are rare locations for primary tumors or metastasis. Assuming that this may be related to expression level of angiogenic inhibitors, we focused our study on the expression pattern of collagen 18/endostatin. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry for collagen 18 and endostatin were carried out on sections of human rete testis and epididymis as well as on epididymal adenoma and human testicular tissue with or without carcinoma in situ (CIS). In situ hybridization revealed strong expression of collagen 18 mRNA in rete testis, efferent ducts and epididymal duct.

Exploring the anatomical factors influencing testes elasticity via ultrasound shear wave elastography: Preliminary results.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the anatomical factors influencing elasticity values of normal testicular parenchyma using shear wave elastography (SWE). METHODS: This study examined 68 healthy male volunteers (117 testes in which standard transverse axis ultrasonography views could be obtained) via conventional scrotal ultrasonography and SWE. Both the mean (EMean) and standard deviation (ESD) elasticity values were acquired. RESULTS: In the standard transverse axis view of the rete testis at the mid-lateral edge of the testes, the EMean values in 2mm the testicular parenchyma

[Lymphatic system of the human testis].

The distribution of lymph vessels in the human testis was investigated using ink injection methods, light and electron microscopy. Lymph capillaries occur in the septula testis but are absent in the intertubular tissue. They consist of endothelial cells provided with an incomplete basal lamina and bound by anchoring filaments to the adjacent connective tissue. Frequently, the endothelial cells are separated by gaps (measuring up to 2 microns). The lymph capillaries of the septula testis are connected to lymph vessels in the rete testis and tunica albuginea. These vessels have occasional smooth

Effects of estrogens on the testis of transsexuals: a pathological and immunocytochemical study.

Testes from five male-to-female transsexuals removed during sex-reversal surgery after administration of estrogens were studied histologically and with immunoperoxidase procedures to locate estrogen receptors (ER) and related antigens. Atrophy of the seminiferous tubules was observed in all cases; its degree, and a marked decrease in Leydig cells, correlated with low plasma gonadotropin levels (rather than with the duration of treatment). In all cases, the rete testis appeared hyperplastic and the other components (efferent ductules, epididymus) well preserved. The efferent ductules proved to

Testicular hilum and vascular invasion predict advanced clinical stage in nonseminomatous germ cell tumors.

Clinical staging is a critical step in the management of testicular germ cell tumors. Up to one-third of nonseminomatous germ cell tumors of the testis present with metastatic disease (clinical stages II and III). We investigated the predictors of metastatic disease at presentation in a cohort of 148 consecutive nonseminomatous germ cell tumors of the testis, over a 10-year period. The following clinical and pathologic features were evaluated: age, tumor size, dominant tumor histology, coagulative necrosis, vascular invasion, rete testis invasion and tumor extension into tunica vaginalis, hila

Isolation and transplantation of spermatogonia in sheep.

Studies in rodents show that spermatogonial transplantation is an excellent new tool for studying spermatogenesis and for preservation and dissemination of genetics. The aim of this study was to adapt the technique to rams. Two issues were addressed: purification of stem cell spermatogonia, and efficient injection of donor spermatogonia into the seminiferous tubules of rams. We compared differential plating and Percoll gradient methods for purifying donor spermatogonia from ram lamb testes. Spermatogonia were identified with an antibody against PGP 9.5, a ubiquitin C-terminal hydrolase. Both p

Spatially Heterogeneous Impairment of Spermatogenesis in the Testis Following Efferent Duct Transection in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive azoospermia, with a sustained elevation in intratesticular pressure, leads to seminiferous epithelium degeneration. However, studies using efferent duct ligation have not fully elucidated the chronic changes in the testis caused by obstruction. OBJECTIVE: Using the efferent duct transection model, we aimed to elucidate the temporal and spatial progression of spermatogenic impairment in the mouse testis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Male mice underwent efferent duct transection and were analyzed at five time points up to 20 weeks. A three-dimensional reconstruction of serial
