[Atypical retinopathia pigmentosa with central retinoschisis (Goldmann-Favre) (author's transl)].

A family is presented whose two daughters suffer from Goldmann-Favre disease. They have a retinoschisis and bone corpuscle like pigmentations. Both the girls have pathological ERG's (reduced b-waves, potentials up to 40 muV, no a-waves). The EOG of the younger is normal (Arden ratio 200%), but the EOG of the elder sister is pathological (Arden ratio right 120%, left 150%).

Optical coherence tomographic findings of glaucomatous eyes with papillomacular retinoschisis.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between the shape of the optic nerve head (ONH) margin detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and the clinical characteristics of glaucomatous eyes with papillomacular retinoschisis (PMRS). METHODS: The medical record of patients with a PMRS in a glaucomatous eye were reviewed. The eyes were placed into two groups determined by the shape of the ONH margin in the OCT images; eyes with an externally oblique ONH margin (Group 1) and eyes with an internally oblique ONH margin (Group 2). We compared the clinical characteristics of the PMRS of the

Optic disc pit with multiquadrant peripapillary retinoschisis and choroidal coloboma.

An 18-year-old man presented with decreased vision in the right eye (OD) noticed for 1 month. On examination, OD best-corrected visual acuity was 3/60 and the left eye (OS) was 6/6 with intraocular pressure of 12 mm Hg in both the eyes (OU). OD fundus revealed an inferior optic-disc-pit with macular-retinoschisis and an inferior choroidal coloboma. OS fundus was normal. On swept-source optical coherence tomography (SSOCT) radial scans, peripapillary-retinoschisis was seen not only in the macular region but in all the four quadrants. To the best of our knowledge, no such case has been reported

Outcome measures in juvenile X-linked retinoschisis: A systematic review.

X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is a leading cause of hereditary juvenile macular degeneration in males resulting in significant vision impairment. Outcome measures to monitor disease progression or therapeutic interventions have evolved with technology. A systematic review was undertaken to evaluate outcome measures for XLRS. Inclusion criteria were all publications examining outcome measures for natural history studies or following an interventional approach for patients with XLRS. Studies which did not present follow-up data were excluded. We searched medical databases including CENTRAL, Ovid

Early photoreceptor outer segment loss and retinoschisis in Cohen syndrome.

PURPOSE: To describe early structural and functional retinal changes in a patient with Cohen syndrome. METHODS: A 13-month-old Caucasian girl of Irish and Spanish ancestry was noted to have micrognathia and laryngomalacia at birth, which prompted a genetic evaluation that revealed biallelic deletions in COH1 (VPS13B) (a maternally inherited 60-kb deletion involving exons 26-32 and a paternally inherited 3.5-kb deletion within exon 17) consistent with Cohen syndrome. She underwent a complete ophthalmic examination, full-field flash electroretinography and retinal imaging with spectral domain o

Vitreoretinal complications and surgical outcomes in patients with X-linked retinoschisis.

PURPOSE: X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) is an inherited vitreoretinal disorder characterized by macular retinoschisis. In a subgroup of patients, peripheral retinoschisis can occur, potentially leading to complications such as vitreous haemorrhage (VH) and retinal detachment (RD). Limited data exist on the optimal management of these complications. This retrospective cohort study evaluates clinical characteristics and outcomes of VH and RD in XLRS patients. METHODS: We included 49 patients diagnosed with XLRS who developed VH and/or RD. Collected data included demographics, best-corrected visu

Observation of macular hole associated with retinoschisis in patients with high myopia.

PURPOSE: To observe the characteristics of highly myopic macular holes (HMMHs) with macular retinoschisis (MRS) by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and explore the possible relationship between HMMHs and different types of MRS. METHODS: We consecutively reviewed the clinical data and OCT images of the patients with HMMHs from June 2015 to February 2021. Then we picked eyes with MRS from these HMMHs for analysis. The minimum linear diameter (MLD), basal diameter (BD), and height (H) of HMMHs were measured. HMMHs were grouped according to the extent or layer involvement of the concomitant MRS

Carbonic anhydrase inhibition in X-linked retinoschisis: An eye on the photoreceptors.

The retinoschisin protein is encoded on the short arm of the X-chromosome by RS1, is expressed abundantly in photoreceptor inner segments and in bipolar cells, and is secreted as an octamer that maintains the structural integrity of the retina. Mutations in RS1 lead to X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS), a disease characterized by the formation of cystic spaces between boys' retinal layers that frequently present in ophthalmoscopy as a "spoke-wheel" pattern on their maculae and by progressively worsening visual acuity (VA). There is no proven therapy for XLRS, but there is mixed evidence that carbo

Pathomechanism of mutated and secreted retinoschisin in X-linked juvenile retinoschisis.

Mutations in the RS1 gene encoding retinoschisin cause X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS), a hereditary retinal dystrophy in males. While most of the XLRS associated mutations strongly interfere with cellular secretion, this is not true for mutants RS1-F108C, -R141G, -R141H, -R182C, -H207Q and -R209H. Native retinoschisin builds double-octamers and binds to retinal membranes, interacting with the retinal Na/K-ATPase. Functionally, it regulates MAP kinase signaling and Na/K-ATPase localization, and hampers photoreceptor degeneration. In this study, we investigated the capacity of the retino

Minor surgery for the repair of retinal detachment emanating from retinoschisis.

PURPOSE: To propose a mechanism for the development of the outer layer retinal tears that occur with retinoschisis and the detachment emanating from it that is consistent with the limited extent of the detachment and the response to binocular occlusion and local buckles. METHODS: A consecutive series of 24 patients with retinoschisis, collected over 15 years, was analysed. Seven patients developed a symptomatic retinal detachment emanating from breaks in the outer layers of retinoschisis. The detachments responded to binocular occlusion, a sponge buckle, or a temporary balloon buckle and lase

Contribution to carrier detection and genetic counselling in X linked retinoschisis.

X linked retinoschisis (RS) is a vitreoretinal disease resulting from microcystic degeneration of the macula associated with peripheral lesions. The disease gene has already been assigned to the distal short arm of the X chromosome (Xp22.2) by linkage studies. In order to contribute both to a better localisation of the RS locus and to genetic counselling in RS families, we have carried out a clinical and genetic analysis in seven pedigrees. We show, first, that in contrast with previous reports, heterozygote carriers frequently express the disease, and display peripheral retinal alterations si

A case of sex-linked juvenile retinoschisis with peripheral vascular anomalies.

A 26-year-old man with sex-linked juvenile central and peripheral retinoschisis showed on fluorescein angiography an avascular lower temporal periphery, bordered at the central side by abnormal capillaries in a dendrite-like structure. In dominant exudative vitreoretinopathy an identical picture without schisis can be seen in the periphery. This feature seems to be a rare phenomenon in sex-linked juvenile retinoschisis. However, routine peripheral ophthalmoscopy and fluorescein angiography (especially inferotemporal) may reveal more cases.

Hereditary retinoschisis linkage studies in a family and considerations in genetic counselling.

We report a family with X-linked juvenile retinoschisis. In addition to the three males with severe visual impairment, six other males in this family were found to have hitherto undiagnosed disease. The findings in these mildly affected males are described in detail. The wide range of clinical manifestations found among the affected relatives initially hampered recognition of the correct diagnosis. Once the correct diagnosis was made, proper genetic counselling could be given. The data are compatible with loose linkage between the loci for juvenile retinoschisis and the red cell antigen marker

Retinoschisis: a retrospective study of an uncommon retinal change in cats and dogs.

Retinoschisis is a poorly documented form of retinal degeneration characterized by cyst-like splitting that occurs between the inner nuclear and outer plexiform layers. The pathogenesis of retinoschisis is incompletely understood, but congenital, acquired and secondary aetiologies (glaucoma, inflammation, neoplasia) are described in humans. This retrospective study investigated the prevalence and associated histological and clinical features of retinoschisis in cats and dogs submitted for biopsy over a 10-year period. Of 140 samples with documented 'retinal vacuolation', four out of 120 (3%) c

A hybrid coloboma and optic disc pit associated with macular retinoschisis.

BACKGROUND: To report and describe an unusual case of a patient with optic disc pit in one eye and optic disc coloboma with a focal pit associated with macular retinoschisis in the other eye. CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-year-old woman presented with optic disc pit in the right eye and optic disc coloboma with a focal pit like excavation in the left eye. Macular spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) of the left eye revealed macular retinoschisis, without serous detachment. CONCLUSIONS: Proper monitoring of patients with disc anomalies associated with maculopathy is mandatory. The
