Follow-up study of apicectomised anterior teeth.

A retrospective study was carried out on anterior teeth which had undergone apicectomy between 1995 and 1997. More maxillary teeth were treated (94.7%) than mandibular teeth (5.3%). Radicular cyst was the most frequently diagnosed reason for the treatment (47.3%), followed by chronic apical infection/granuloma (44.0%). The overall success rate was 71.9%, while treatment outcome was doubtful in 14.0% of the apicectomised teeth. The presence of pre- or postoperative signs and symptoms did not have any statistically significant effect on the treatment outcome. A higher percentage of roots with re

Esthetic periodontal surgery for impacted dilacerated maxillary central incisors.

Clinicians do not frequently see impacted dilacerated maxillary incisors in their patients. When they do, there are several diagnostic and management challenges for correcting root dilacerations. An unfavorable esthetic outcome might occur as a result of soft-tissue complications during surgical eruption procedures. We present 2 patients with an impacted and dilacerated maxillary central incisor. Computed tomography scans with 3-dimensional reformation were used to accurately assess the positions of the dilacerated teeth, the degree of dilaceration, and the stage of root formation. The therapy

Transplantation of primary canines after loss or ankylosis of upper permanent incisors. A prospective case series study on healing and survival.

Primary canines were transplanted to replace lost or ankylosed permanent upper incisors. Healing, healing complications and loss and survival were evaluated in a prospective case series study. In total, 27 primary canines were transplanted. Extraorally posts made of titanium were inserted into the root canal from a retrograde direction as an immediate endodontic treatment and as an elongation of the short autologous roots. In some cases antiresorptive-regenerative therapy was used. Inclusion criteria for the evaluation were a minimal observation period of 12 months or the observation of compli

Anatomic and microbiologic challenges to achieving success with endodontic treatment: a case report.

This article describes a case of persistent apical periodontitis that required several nonsurgical and surgical approaches for resolution. A 28-year-old woman presented with a large symptomatic apical periodontitis lesion associated with the maxillary left lateral incisor that persisted in spite of previous nonsurgical and surgical endodontic treatment. Root canal retreatment was accomplished, but the lesion only showed a slight decrease in size after 18 months. Forty-six months after retreatment, the patient returned because of reemergence of symptoms. Radiographically, the lesion remained re

Effect of immediate calcium hydroxide treatment and permanent root-filling on periodontal healing in contaminated replanted teeth.

The effect of immediate permanent root-filling and immediate intracanal calcium hydroxide treatment on experimentally contaminated and necrotized periodontal membranes (PDM) in avulsed and subsequently replanted monkey teeth was studied. Almost the entire root surface in the non-endodontically treated control teeth were covered with inflammatory resorption. A significant shift towards ankylosis not associated with root resorption (greater than 80% of the total root surface area) was noted following calcium hydroxide treatment. About two thirds of the root surfaces from the teeth with permanent

Indications for surgical endodontics and findings of an audit into referrals.

UNLABELLED: Peri-radicular surgery is a valuable treatment modality allowing thorough treatment of chronic infection of the peri-radicular tissues. It is important that this treatment option is prescribed appropriately and steps are taken to help improve outcomes of surgery. We discuss the indications for peri-radicular surgery, considerations when planning treatment for teeth where orthograde endodontics has failed and present the findings of an audit into the appropriateness of referrals for peri-radicular surgery to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at a District General Hosp

Apical capping as a new technique for retrograde treatment of an infected root apex: introduction and first results.

INTRODUCTION: The success rate of surgical retrograde treatment of an infected root apex is limited by the existence of infected side canals which are not treatable by conventional retrograde preparation and filling techniques. This experimental study introduces a new technique of retrograde apex preparation followed by covering the apex with a titanium cap. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 10 extracted canines, retrograde circular preparation of the root apex was performed using a new ultrasonic preparation tip and a high-power ultrasound machine. The prepared stump was covered by a titanium cap fix

Aluminum oxide ceramic pins for retrograde root filling--experiences with a new system.

Retrograde root filling is, under certain conditions, the last chance to keep the functional ability of the teeth. With a new method using aluminum oxide ceramic pins for retrograde root filling, we believe that this aim may be achieved with greater success than with other methods. A success rate of 95% (out of a total of 164 teeth) after 1 year is the result of our investigation. The requirements of retrograde root filling are met in a high degree because of the excellent biologic compatibility of the ceramic material and the high marginal tightness with the use of conical pins.

Complex endodontic treatment of an immature type III dens invaginatus. A case report.

AIM: To report the endodontic treatment of an immature maxillary central incisor with dens invaginatus. SUMMARY: Dens invaginatus is a rare malformation of teeth, probably resulting from an infolding of the dental papilla during tooth development. The present case describes the complex endodontic treatment of a type III dens invaginatus in an immature maxillary central incisor with a necrotic pulp and abscess formation. The initial treatment goal was to achieve apexification of the pseudocanal root and conservative root canal treatment in the main canal. Following 1-year of treatment with cal

Do gingival soft tissues benefit from the application of a papilla preservation flap technique in endodontic surgery?

PURPOSE: A healthy gingival condition after endodontic surgery may depend on adequate soft tissue management. The aim of this study was to compare 2 incision techniques, papilla base incision (PBI) and intrasulcular flap (IS), which are currently used in endodontic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the present nonrandomized controlled clinical trial, patients requiring endodontic surgery on a single tooth were enrolled. PBI was used in 1 group and IS was used in the other group. The primary outcomes were changes in periodontal probing depth, gingival recession, and height of the interproxima

The management of mucosal fenestration: a report of two cases.

AIM: To report on the management of two patients with mucosal fenestration of root apices. SUMMARY: Two cases of mucosal fenestration of root apices were treated by a combination of nonsurgical root canal treatment and surgery. Root-end resection was performed to bring the root apices within the alveolus before root-end filling and packing of the bony defects with demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft. The areas were then covered with connective tissue grafts taken from the hard palate before repositioning the mucogingival flap. At 1 year follow-up, the mucosal fenestrations were complete

Prevention by insulin-like growth factor-I and riluzole in motor neuron death after neonatal axotomy.

Transection of the sciatic nerve in neonatal rats results discernable loss of motor neurons in the spinal cord. This neuronal death could be due to lack of retrogradely transported target derived neurotrophic factors, since some of these factors have been shown to be effective in injury induced motor neuron death. Another hypothesis suggests that glutamate and its receptors has been implicated as possible mechanism for motor neuron death, because inhibitor of glutamate release and antagonists of glutamate receptors are effective in preventing axotomized motor neuron death. To investigate the e

Posteromedial thigh perforators in contemporary profunda artery perforator flap surgery: An anatomical reappraisal.

INTRODUCTION: The vascular anatomy underlying contemporary profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap harvest remains incompletely defined. Although PAP flaps are traditionally considered as profunda femoris artery perforator flaps, the perforators encountered within the surgically relevant posteromedial thigh territory may arise from multiple vascular sources. This study aimed to reappraise the anatomy of posteromedial thigh perforators relevant to PAP flap harvest, characterize their anatomical variability, and develop a descriptive framework for these variations. METHODS: One hundred posteromed

Sealing ability of MTA used as a root end filling material: effect of the sonic and ultrasonic condensation.

Despite the excellent properties of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), the condensation technique may have some influence in its sealing ability. The purpose of this study was to compare the sealing ability of sonic and ultrasonic setting of MTA. Thirty-four extracted human teeth had their canals prepared and filled with Sealapex sealer and gutta-percha using the active lateral condensation technique. The teeth were rendered waterproof and apicoectomy performed at 3 mm from the apex. Root-end cavities (3.0 mm deep and 1.4 mm diameter) were prepared with diamond ultrasonic tips. The root-end cav
