BACKGROUND: Retroperitoneal ganglioneuromas are rare entities. Their treatment is complete surgical resection. Due to the proximity to major vessels, variable location and unknown malignant status, surgeons are often reluctant to use a laparoscopic approach for the resection of retroperitoneal masses. Schwannomas are typically slow growing, encapsulated benign neoplasms. Visceral schwannomas are rare, and preoperative diagnosis is challenging, as they are often confused with other neoplasms even with advanced imaging studies. Surgical excision is usually needed to establish a definitive diagnosis, as pathology is the "gold standard." Testicular cancer represents 1% of adult neoplasms and is the most common solid malignancy in young men. Of men presenting with seminoma, approximately 20% will have clinical stage (CS) II disease, characterized by enlarged retroperitoneal lymph nodes without further metastasis. RATIONALE: Primary retroperitoneal germ cell tumors are uncommon and especially rare in female patients. However, this type should be included in the differential diagnosis of retroperitoneal tumors that may metastasize from the gonads and be a primary tumor.
PATIENT CONCERNS: An abdominal mass was detected in a 38-year-old woman during physical examination, which was accompanied by left renal obstructive hydrops. She was admitted to our institution for further investigation. The patient had no obvious clinical symptoms, and the levels of serum tumor markers did not signifificantly increase.

The authors report 2 patients with recurrent retroperitoneal neoplasms in whom ureteral fistulas were treated successfully by percutaneous transcatheter embolization of the renal artery with absolute ethanol. Ileum was used as a ureteral replacement in 12 patients, 7 of whom had solitary kidneys. Patients with retroperitoneal or mediastinal neoplasms of gonadal tissue type and clinically normal testes pose interesting therapeutic dilemmas. Three major groups of patients are recognized: (1) tumor is primary extragenital gonadal neoplasm; (2) occult microscopic primary neoplasm in a testicle with metastases; (3) area of fibrosis in a testicle representing local regression of tumor, but with distant metastases. Review of case reports often indicates lack of data sufficient for classification. Every effort should be made to group patients into proper categories, since treatment will vary.

Perirenal hemangiomas are rare benign vascular tumors that can present as indeterminate retroperitoneal masses and mimic renal, adrenal, or soft-tissue malignancy.
