Associations of Reversal Learning Performance With Personality Disorder Profile and Drug Abuse History in a Sample of Prison Inmates.

Prison inmate samples present a high prevalence of impulsivity- and compulsivity-related behavioral problems. The Probabilistic Reversal Learning Task (PRLT) is a useful tool to assess decision-making, and we explore its associations with inmates' personality disorder (antisocial personality disorder, APD; obsessive-compulsive personality disorder, OCPD; or both) and history of drug abuse. Mixed-effects methods were used to model acquisition and reacquisition curves across PRLT, in a sample of 275 prison inmates diagnosed with OCPD, APD, or both. Two aspects were assessed: general discriminati

Gestational choline supplementation ameliorates T-maze reversal learning deficits induced by first trimester binge alcohol exposure in weanling lambs.

In rodent models of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD), cognitive deficits are implicated in impaired T-maze spatial reversal learning. Rat studies have indicated supplemental administration of choline during the developmental period of alcohol exposure can ameliorate spatial reversal deficits. This study tested whether beneficial effects of prenatal choline supplementation could be confirmed in a sheep model of binge exposure in the first trimester equivalent. Two hypotheses were tested: 1) alcohol exposure would produce deficits in reversal of a T-maze position discrimination; and 2) ge

Impaired instrumental reversal learning is associated with increased medial prefrontal cortex activity in Sapap3 knockout mouse model of compulsive behavior.

Convergent functional neuroimaging findings implicate hyperactivity across the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and striatum in the neuropathology of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The impact of cortico-striatal circuit hyperactivity on executive functions subserved by these circuits is unclear, because impaired recruitment of PFC has also been observed in OCD patients during paradigms assessing cognitive flexibility. To investigate the relationship between cortico-striatal circuit disturbances and cognitive functioning relevant to OCD, Sapap3 knockout mice (KOs) and littermate controls were test

The adenosine A2A receptor agonist, CGS 21680, attenuates a probabilistic reversal learning deficit and elevated grooming behavior in BTBR mice.

UNLABELLED: Restricted interests and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) are a defining feature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). To date there are limited options for treating this core symptomology. Treatments that stimulate adenosine A2A receptors may represent a promising approach for reducing RRBs in ASD. This is because A2A receptors are expressed on striatal neurons of the basal ganglia indirect pathway. Under activation of this pathway has been associated with RRBs while activation of A2A receptors leads to increased activity of the indirect basal ganglia pathway. The present studies investig

ROFI: a deep learning-based ophthalmic sign-preserving and reversible patient face anonymizer.

Ophthalmic diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, and inherited retinal dystrophies remain leading causes of visual impairment worldwide, necessitating accurate diagnosis and longitudinal monitoring. Modern ophthalmology increasingly relies on facial and ocular imaging, yet the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into these workflows raises significant privacy concerns. ROFI (Reversible Ophthalmic Face Image anonymizer) is a novel deep learning-based framework designed to anonymize patient facial features while preserving ophthalmic signs ess

Adaptive reinforcement learning for energy-efficient high-recovery closed-circuit reverse osmosis.

Closed-circuit reverse osmosis (CCRO) achieves high recovery; however, its semi-batch purge-and-refill cycles complicate control and optimization. Unlike static rule-based operation, reinforcement learning is increasingly used for operational optimization to adaptively select real-time control setpoints under changing conditions. In this study, a data-calibrated dynamic CCRO simulator was integrated with a reinforcement learning control framework and evaluated under realistic plant-variable conditions. Plant behavior was stably reproduced by the simulator, achieving low RMSE across permeate fl

Prediction of Pulpal Sequelae in Cracked Teeth with Reversible Pulpitis using Machine Learning Models.

INTRODUCTION: In early stages of cracked teeth, pulpal inflammation is considered reversible. Cracked teeth with retained pulp vitality demonstrate higher survival rates whereas root canal treatment (RCT) negatively influences survival outcomes. The clinical challenge lies in discerning when RCT is required. This study aimed to develop and validate machine learning models for predicting pulp survival in cracked teeth with reversible pulpitis and investigating associations between patient- and tooth-related variables and treatment outcomes. METHODS: Data from 569 patients with 593 cracked teet

Machine Learning-Driven Prediction of Electrochemical Promotion in the Reverse Water Gas Shift Reaction.

Electrochemical promotion of catalysis (EPOC) provides an effective and versatile strategy to enhance catalytic activity, selectivity, and stability in the reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) reaction, facilitating efficient CO2 hydrogenation to syngas under milder conditions. However, predicting EPOC results using novel catalytic materials under diverse conditions remains challenging. This study introduces a machine learning framework to predict electrochemical promotion behavior and the rate enhancement ratios (ρ), i.e., ratio between promoted and unpromoted reaction rate, based on the selected c

Machine learning enhanced prediction of optical properties via reverse Monte Carlo method.

We present a machine learning (ML) approach for the accelerated extraction of optical properties from the experimental reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy (REELS) spectra by the reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) method. Taking platinum (Pt) as an example, experimental REELS spectra recorded at incident electron energies of 2.0 and 1.5 keV over an energy loss range of 0-200 eV are processed by one-dimensional convolutional neural networks trained specifically for each incident energy. The training processes incorporate the physical constraints based on the perfect-screening (ps-) and oscillato

Implicit processes do not contribute to learning to reach in small mirror reversed visuomotor environments.

Learning to reach with a small visuomotor rotation (VR), where visual feedback regarding hand motion is rotated relative to one's hand trajectory, has been shown to arise unconsciously (i.e., implicitly). It is unclear whether implicit processes also support learning to reach with a small mirror reversal (MR), where visual feedback regarding hand position is reflected across the body midline. To address this gap, we asked whether implicit processes contribute to learning to reach with a small MR distortion. Forty-two right-handed participants reached to targets located 10° to the left and righ

Kcnn2 blockade reverses learning deficits in a mouse model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

Learning disabilities are hallmarks of congenital conditions caused by prenatal exposure to harmful agents. These include fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs) with a wide range of cognitive deficiencies, including impaired motor skill development. Although these effects have been well characterized, the molecular effects that bring about these behavioral consequences remain to be determined. We previously found that the acute molecular responses to alcohol in the embryonic brain are stochastic, varying among neural progenitor cells. However, the pathophysiological consequences stemming fro

Multiple Machine Learning Comparisons of HIV Cell-based and Reverse Transcriptase Data Sets.

The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) causes over a million deaths every year and has a huge economic impact in many countries. The first class of drugs approved were nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. A newer generation of reverse transcriptase inhibitors have become susceptible to drug resistant strains of HIV, and hence, alternatives are urgently needed. We have recently pioneered the use of Bayesian machine learning to generate models with public data to identify new compounds for testing against different disease targets. The current study has used the NIAID ChemDB HIV, Opportu

Legionella pneumophila-induced visual learning impairment reversed by anti-interleukin-1 beta.

Infecting mice with the opportunistic intracellular pathogen Legionella pneumophila markedly inhibited place learning of infected C57BL/6 mice as determined by the Morris water maze test. Mice infected with L. pneumophila evinced much less ability to learn the position of a hidden platform than did normal noninfected mice, which quickly learned the location of the hidden platform and escaped from the cool water of the pool with increasing efficiency. However, infected mice treated with anti-interleukin-1 (anti-IL-1) neutralizing antibody learned the task with about the same efficiency as the c

Activation of TrkB in Parvalbumin interneurons is required for the promotion of reversal learning in spatial and fear memory by antidepressants.

Critical period-like plasticity (iPlasticity) can be reinstated in the adult brain by several interventions, including drugs and optogenetic modifications. We have demonstrated that a combination of iPlasticity with optimal training improves behaviors related to neuropsychiatric disorders. In this context, the activation of TrkB, a receptor for BDNF, in Parvalbumin-positive (PV+) interneurons has a pivotal role in cortical network changes. However, it is unknown if the activation of TrkB in PV+ interneurons is important for other plasticity-related behaviors, especially for learning and memory

Computational modelling of reinforcement learning and functional neuroimaging of probabilistic reversal for dissociating compulsive behaviours in gambling and cocaine use disorders.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with cocaine use disorder or gambling disorder demonstrate impairments in cognitive flexibility: the ability to adapt to changes in the environment. Flexibility is commonly assessed in a laboratory setting using probabilistic reversal learning, which involves reinforcement learning, the process by which feedback from the environment is used to adjust behavior. AIMS: It is poorly understood whether impairments in flexibility differ between individuals with cocaine use and gambling disorders, and how this is instantiated by the brain. We applied computational modelling m

Nicotine-conditioned place preference, reversal learning and social interaction in MK-801-induced schizophrenia model: Effects of post-weaning enriched environment.

Based on the clinical observations of severe cognitive deficits in schizophrenia patients and the relationship between environmental parameters and the severity of schizophrenia symptoms, the present study investigated these parameters in an dizocilpine (MK-801)-induced schizophrenia model in rats. In addition to, it evaluated whether a post-weaning enriched environment (EE) would affect the nicotine-induced conditioned place preference (CPP) and the motor and cognitive deficits caused by MK-801 treatment. Male Wistar rat pups were injected peritoneally with MK-801 (1 mg/kg) on a daily basis b

Hidden talents: Poly (I:C)-induced maternal immune activation improves mouse visual discrimination performance and reversal learning in a sex-dependent manner.

While there is a strong focus on the negative consequences of maternal immune activation (MIA) on developing brains, very little attention is directed towards potential advantages of early life challenges. In this study, we utilized a polyinosine-polycytidylic acid (poly(I:C)) MIA model to test visual pairwise discrimination (PD) and reversal learning (RL) in mice using touchscreen technology. Significant sex differences emerged in that MIA reduced the latency for males to make a correct choice in the PD task while females reached criterion sooner, made fewer errors, and utilized fewer correct

Acquisition of Spatial Search Strategies and Reversal Learning in the Morris Water Maze Depend on Disparate Brain Functional Connectivity in Mice.

Learning has been proposed to coincide with changes in connections between brain regions. In the present study, we used resting-state fMRI (rsfMRI) to map brain-wide functional connectivity (FC) in mice that were trained in the hidden-platform version of the Morris water maze. C57BL6 mice were investigated in a small animal MRI scanner following 2, 10, or 15 days of acquisition learning, or 5 days of reversal learning. Spatial learning coincided with progressive and changing FC between telencephalic regions that have been implemented in spatial learning (such as hippocampus, cingulate, visual,

Effects of long-term high-fat food or methamphetamine intake and serotonin 2C receptors on reversal learning in female rhesus macaques.

Perseverative behavior has been highly implicated in addiction. Activation of serotonin 2C receptors (5-HT2CRs) attenuates cocaine and high caloric food intake, but whether a 5-HT2CR agonist can reduce high caloric diet (HCD) or methamphetamine (METH) intake and response perseveration remains unknown. Clarifying the role of 5-HT2CRs in these behaviors will improve knowledge of neurochemical processes that regulate flexible decision-making and whether improvements in decision-making are accompanied by decreases in HCD or METH intake. This study evaluated the effects of long-term HCD and METH in

L-type calcium channel blockade alleviates molecular and reversal spatial learning and memory alterations induced by entorhinal amyloid pathology in rats.

The entorhinal cortex (EC) is one of the most vulnerable brain regions that is affected by beta amyloid (Aβ) in the early phases of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Calcium dyshomeostasis is one reason of Aβ pathology and the role of calcium channel blockers (CCBs) in this phenomenon has not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the possible neuroprotective effect of CCBs, nimodipine and isradipine against amyloid pathogenesis in EC. The Aβ 1-42 was injected bilaterally into the EC of male rats and spatial performance was assessed between 7 and 12 days after Aβ injection by Morris water ma
