Monetary rewards modulate inhibitory control.

The ability to override a dominant response, often referred to as behavioral inhibition, is considered a key element of executive cognition. Poor behavioral inhibition is a defining characteristic of several neurological and psychiatric populations. Recently, there has been increasing interest in the motivational dimension of behavioral inhibition, with some experiments incorporating emotional contingencies in classical inhibitory paradigms such as the Go/NoGo and Stop Signal Tasks (SSTs). Several studies have reported a positive modulatory effect of reward on performance in pathological condi

The endocannabinoid system and nondrug rewarding behaviours.

Rewarding behaviours such as sexual activity, eating, nursing, parenting, social interactions, and play activity are conserved strongly in evolution, and they are essential for development and survival. All of these behaviours are enjoyable and represent pleasant experiences with a high reward value. Remarkably, rewarding behaviours activate the same brain circuits that mediate the positive reinforcing effects of drugs of abuse and of other forms of addiction, such as gambling and food addiction. Given the involvement of the endocannabinoid system in a variety of physiological functions of the

Cerebellar circuits anticipate dopamine rewards.

Predicting rewards is critical for learning. Although the cerebellum predicts rewards like water and food, it also famously coordinates physical actions like drinking and eating. To disentangle reward prediction from the movements to consume reward, we trained mice to push for delayed dopamine rewards delivered directly into the brain. Via two-photon imaging, we found that many cerebellar granule cells (GrCs) anticipated dopamine with sustained activity that terminated at reward delivery. GrC activity also "stretched" to match 1- or 2-s intervals before dopamine, thereby linking the action to

Cognitive effort increases the intensity of rewards.

An important body of literature suggests that exerting intense cognitive effort causes mental fatigue and can lead to unhealthy behaviors such as indulging in high-calorie food and taking drugs. Whereas this effect has been mostly explained in terms of weakening cognitive control, cognitive effort may also bias behavioral choices by amplifying the hedonic and emotional impact of rewards. We report parallel findings with animals and humans supporting this hypothesis. In rats, exerting cognitive effort immediately before access to cocaine self-administration significantly increased drug intake.

Sharing Rewards Undermines Coordinated Hunting.

Coordinated hunting is widely observed in animals, and sharing rewards is often considered a major incentive for its success. While current theories about the role played by sharing in coordinated hunting are based on correlational evidence, we reveal the causal roles of sharing rewards through computational modeling with a state-of-the-art Multi-agent Reinforcement Learning (MARL) algorithm. We show that counterintuitively, while selfish agents reach robust coordination, sharing rewards undermines coordination. Hunting coordination modeled through sharing rewards (1) suffers from the free-rid

Rewards that are near increase impulsive action.

In modern society, the natural drive to behave impulsively in order to obtain rewards must often be curbed. A continued failure to do so is associated with a range of outcomes including drug abuse, pathological gambling, and obesity. Here, we used virtual reality technology to investigate whether spatial proximity to rewards has the power to exacerbate the drive to behave impulsively toward them. We embedded two behavioral tasks measuring distinct forms of impulsive behavior, impulsive action, and impulsive choice, within an environment rendered in virtual reality. Participants responded to th

The importance of agency in human reward processing.

Converging evidence suggests that reinforcement learning (RL) signals exist within the human brain and that they play a role in the modification of behaviour. According to RL theory, prediction errors are used to update values associated with actions and/or predictive cues, thus facilitate decision-making. For example, the reward positivity-a feedback-sensitive component of the event-related brain potential (ERP)-is thought to index an RL prediction error. An unresolved question, however, is whether or not action is required to elicit a reward positivity. Reinforcement learning theory would pr

Brain activity of anandamide: a rewarding bliss?

Anandamide is a lipid mediator that acts as an endogenous ligand of CB1 receptors. These receptors are also the primary molecular target responsible for the pharmacological effects of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive ingredient in Cannabis sativa. Several studies demonstrate that anandamide exerts an overall modulatory effect on the brain reward circuitry. Several reports suggest its involvement in the addiction-producing actions of other abused drugs, and it can also act as a behavioral reinforcer in animal models of drug abuse. Importantly, all these effects of anandamide appear to

The Rapid Capture of Attention by Rewarded Objects.

When a stimulus is associated with a reward, it becomes prioritized, and the allocation of attention to that stimulus increases. For low-level features, such as color, this reward-based allocation of attention can manifest early in time and as a faster and stronger shift of attention to targets with that color, as reflected by the N2pc (a parieto-occipital electrophysiological component peaking at ∼250 msec). It is unknown, however, if reward associations can similarly modulate attentional shifts to complex objects or object categories, or if reward-related modulation of attentional allocation

Homers at the Interface between Reward and Pain.

Pain alters opioid reinforcement, presumably via neuroadaptations within ascending pain pathways interacting with the limbic system. Nerve injury increases expression of glutamate receptors and their associated Homer scaffolding proteins throughout the pain processing pathway. Homer proteins, and their associated glutamate receptors, regulate behavioral sensitivity to various addictive drugs. Thus, we investigated a potential role for Homers in the interactions between pain and drug reward in mice. Chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve elevated Homer1b/c and/or Homer2a/b expre

Sensitivity to reward and punishment in eating disorders.

The aim of this review was to collate and summarise the self-report data regarding anomalies in sensitivity to reward and punishment in eating disorders (ED) with use of a meta-analysis where possible. Electronic databases were searched to December 2008. Studies were required to have a non-eating disorder healthy control group and include at least one self-report measure of sensitivity to reward or punishment in an eating disorder population. Findings were very heterogeneous and inconsistencies between studies and measures were highlighted. In general, patients with anorexia nervosa (restricti

Sensitivity to reward: implications for overeating and overweight.

Sensitivity to reward (STR)-a personality trait firmly rooted in the neurobiology of the mesolimbic dopamine system-has been strongly implicated in the risk for addiction. This construct describes the ability to derive pleasure or reward from natural reinforcers like food, and from pharmacologic rewards like addictive drugs. Recently experts in the field of addiction research have acknowledged that psychomotor stimulant drugs are no longer at the heart of all addictions, and that brain circuits can also be deranged with natural rewards like food. The present study tested a model in which STR w

Low reward responsiveness as a moderator of chronic stress effects on depressive symptoms in adolescents: An examination of monetary and social rewards.

Exposure to stressors is a known risk factor for depression. Not all who experience stress develop depression, raising questions about vulnerabilities. Low neural reward responsiveness may be a vulnerability for depression in combination with stress. Research has primarily focused on responses to monetary rewards. Additional work is needed examining reward responsiveness across domains to investigate where patterns potentially diverge in understanding vulnerabilities for depression. To address this gap, we compared interactive effects between chronic stress and neural responses to monetary and

Reward and punishment sensitivity in children with ADHD: validating the Sensitivity to Punishment and Sensitivity to Reward Questionnaire for children (SPSRQ-C).

This study validates the Sensitivity to Punishment and Sensitivity to Reward Questionnaire for children (SPSRQ-C), using a Dutch sample of 1234 children between 6-13 years old. Factor analysis determined that a 4-factor and a 5-factor solution were best fitting, explaining 41% and 50% of the variance respectively. The 4-factor model was highly similar to the original SPSRQ factors found in adults (Punishment Sensitivity, Reward Responsivity, Impulsivity/Fun-Seeking, and Drive). The 5-factor model was similar to the 4-factor model, with the exception of a subdivision of the Punishment Sensitivi

Stimulant medications affect arousal and reward, not attention.

Prescription stimulants such as methylphenidate are being used by an increasing portion of the population, primarily children. These potent norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitors promote wakefulness, suppress appetite, enhance physical performance, and are purported to increase attentional abilities. Prior functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have yielded conflicting results about the effects of stimulants on the brain's attention, action/motor, and salience regions that are difficult to reconcile with their proposed attentional effects. Here, we utilized resting-state

A novel brainstem nucleus orchestrating reward and aversion.

Reward processing is a critical brain function. Zichó and colleagues recently identified a previously unrecognized brainstem nucleus, the subventricular tegmental nucleus (SVTg), as a novel reward center that modulates dopamine release and regulates reward processing by balancing the lateral habenula (LHb)-ventral tegmental area (VTA) axis.
