Rhinitis is characterized by nasal congestion, rhinorrhea, sneezing, and/or posterior nasal drainage. It affects a significant portion of the population and presents a large burden economically and on quality of life. Rhinitis is broadly characterized as allergic and nonallergic, of which nonallergic rhinitis may be divided into inflammatory and noninflammatory etiologies. The inflammatory causes include nonallergic rhinitis with eosinophilia, postinfectious, and rhinitis associated with nasal polyps. The noninflammatory causes include idiopathic nonallergic (vasomotor) rhinitis, medication-in

Rhinitis symptoms of rhinorrhea, congestion, sneezing, nasal/ocular pruritis, and postnasal drainage can significantly affect the quality of life for older adults. As the US population ages, it will be increasingly important for health-care providers to effectively diagnose and manage rhinitis. Rhinitis is categorized broadly into allergic rhinitis and non-allergic rhinitis. Environmental changes and avoidance measures are a primary means of intervention. In addition, there are several topical therapies (nasal sprays) that can be effective for symptom control.

The cause of feline chronic rhinitis is incompletely understood and it is often a diagnosis of exclusion. History, clinical signs, and investigations performed to reach this diagnosis are discussed. Several treatment options are provided, although cure of this frustrating disease is rarely achieved.

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is characterized by immune-mediated inflammation of the nasal mucosal lining. Although this chronic disease is not fatal, it is associated with many debilitating symptoms. Like many other chronic diseases, AR has a wide range of clinical aspects, and comorbidities such as asthma, rhinosinusitis, dermatitis, and conjunctivitis may accompany the disease to different degrees. These comorbidities and features determine the clinical phenotypes of AR. Different phenotypes and other characteristics of AR are discussed in this review. It is important for clinicians to be aware o

Allergic rhinitis affects millions of Americans and the numbers continue to increase. Fortunately, there exists a wide array of pharmacotherapeutic options with relatively safe side effect profiles for the management of the varying subtypes. Additionally, there are newer agents on the horizon. The efficacies of intranasal corticosteroids, antihistamines, combination topical therapy, leukotriene inhibitors, mast cell stabilizers, anticholinergics, mucolytics, decongestants, and anti-IgE are reviewed.

Allergic rhinitis affects up to 40% of children but is commonly undiagnosed. Careful assessment of nasal symptoms allows for the most appropriate therapeutic options to be chosen. Allergen avoidance is often difficult in practice. Antihistamines are of limited benefit in allergic rhinitis caused by house dust mite and other perennial allergens, where symptoms, predominantly nasal obstruction, are not histamine mediated. In contrast, symptoms triggered by pollen, such as nasal itch, rhinorrhoea and sneezing, are relieved by antihistamines. Intranasal steroids are the treatment of choice for per

Vasomotor rhinitis is the most common form of nonallergic rhinitis, comprising approximately 71% of all nonallergic rhinitis conditions. Although the epidemiology of this subtype of nonallergic rhinitis has not been definitively studied, it is estimated that 14 million Americans suffer from vasomotor rhinitis, with a worldwide prevalence approaching 320 million.

Patients with chronic diseases, including chronic respiratory diseases, usually have considerably impaired sleep quality that may increase the frequency of exacerbations and severity of symptoms, lead to difficulty in patient management, and reduce quality of life (QOL). During the last few decades, several studies have shown that, in addition to the classic signs of sneezing, nasal itching, rhinorrhea, and nasal obstruction, allergic rhinitis has an important impact on the QOL of adults and children. In 2001, the ARIA (Allergic Rhinitis and its Impact on Asthma) report based its new severity

In contradistinction to the poetically inspired disjunction between the name and quality of a rose recited by Juliet in the famous quote from Shakespeare's play, disease labels used in the medical sciences need to have exact meaning to ensure that they communicate an accurate diagnosis and a valid treatment approach. Above, we presented a consistent nosology for rhinitis consequent to infection. There, we argued that the term "rhinitis" should be used to describe the condition of nasal mucosal pathology and that the rSSC be used to describe the appreciated expression of that pathology. Chronic rhinitis is a common and important problem in cats potentially resulting from a number of intranasal or systemic disorders. Idiopathic chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal neoplasia are the most common causes of chronic nasal disease in cats. For most cats with chronic rhinitis, diagnostic imaging, endoscopic studies, and nasal biopsy will be required to establish a diagnosis. A discussion of some of the more common causes of chronic nasal disease is presented.

Due to its high and increasing prevalence, its impact on quality of life, the association with multiple comorbidities and the considerable socio-economic burden, allergic rhinitis is a major respiratory disorder and represents a global health concern. The ARIA working group has proposed a new classification for allergic rhinitis into intermittent or persistent, based on the duration of symptoms. The severity of allergic rhinitis is graded according to the impact of the disease on the quality of life. The diagnosis of allergic rhinitis involves a thorough history and clinical examination. BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis is the most common chronic condition seen in the outpatient practice of medicine. Its incidence is rising in parallel with other IgE-mediated diseases, affecting 10 to 30% of adults and up to 40% of children. Half the patients with allergic rhinitis experience symptoms up to 4 months per year, whereas 20% are symptomatic more than 9 months of the year. This disease is often associated with asthma, sinusitis, and otitis media.
OBJECTIVE: To review the literature concerning the evaluation and treatment of allergic rhinitis.
DATA SOURCES: Epidemiologic, pathophysio

Over the last few years, the importance of sport in everyday life has rapidly increased. Asthma and allergic rhinitis are among the most common problems to be afforded in those practising sports. It is believed that allergy represents a limitation to sport activity, but many elite athletes suffer from respiratory allergy: within those participating in the Olympic Games, 49% suffered from allergic rhinitis, and 20% of winter sport athletes suffered from asthma. Exercise is a potent trigger factor for asthma both in allergic and non allergic subjects. About 70% of asthmatic patients experience a

Rhinitis is characterised by the presence of two or more of the following symptoms: nasal blockage, sneezing, rhinorrhoea (a persistent watery mucous discharge from the nose) and nasal itching which last for an hour or more on most days. Allergy is the commonest cause of chronic symptoms. Patients with allergic rhinitis often have a clear relationship between symptoms and allergen exposure, for example, during the tree/grass pollen season. Viral or bacterial infection is the commonest acute cause of symptoms and is usually self-limiting.

Rhinitis and sinusitis are prevalent medical conditions that are often associated with each other and may result in significant morbidity and medical costs. They can cause systemic symptoms, decrease quality of life, and result in reduced workplace productivity and missed school days. Appropriate management of rhinitis or sinusitis may be an important component in effective management of coexisting or complicating conditions, such as asthma, allergic conjunctivitis, or chronic otitis media. Rhinitis may be caused by allergic, non-allergic, infectious, hormonal, occupational, and other factors.

Allergic diseases remains an important problem that affects people of all ages. The prevalence of allergic rhinitis amounts to 10 to 16% in Central Europe with a tendency to be on the rise. Allergic rhinitis constitutes one of the commonest causes for visits to a general practitioner. Correct diagnosis is important for optimal management. A thorough history should be taken, followed by general and endoscopic examinations and confirmatory investigations. Careful examination should reveal obvious alternative causes of symptoms, such as polyps or tumours. If allergy is suspected, this can be conf

Allergic rhinitis, a common and often debilitating disease marked by rhinorrhea, nasal congestion, nasal itching, and sneezing, is on the increase worldwide. Treatment involves allergen avoidance, pharmacotherapy, and, in selected cases, immunotherapy. This overview describes the characteristics, pathogenesis, and diagnosis of allergic rhinitis. The major contributing allergens of seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis are identified. Pharmacotherapy is described within the context of treatment guidelines developed by the major asthma and allergy professional organizations. Oral H1 antihista

The chronic rhinitis is a frequent problem with age. In the nose, normal physiologic changes of aging include loss of nasal tip support, atrophy of mucus-producing mucosal glands, and decreased olfaction. The fragmentation and weakening of the cartilage of the septum also causes airflow changes contributing to nasal stuffiness. These changes contribute to geriatric rhinitis, the symptoms of which are often attributed by the older patient to "allergies" or "sinus trouble". An understanding of these anatomic changes, linked with a thorough history and physical examination, allows the physician t

Allergic rhinitis is a common disease with a prevalence of 10-20% in western countries. Allergic rhinitis may be complicated by the possible restriction of quality of life and can lead to sequelae like sinusitis, headache or even allergic asthma. The treatment of allergic rhinitis is mainly based on allergen avoidance, pharmacological treatment and specific immunotherapy. For mild symptoms of seasonal or perennial allergic rhinitis topical or nonsedating second generation oral H1-antihistamines or chromones are advised. If the patient presents symptoms of long duration or nasal obstruction is
