We report the case of a 71 years old patient with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), who developed a rapidly progressing multi-fungal infection including mucormycosis of the central nervous system (CNS) during treatment with ibrutinib. On autopsy mucorales species were demonstrated intravascularly by histomorphology of several organs and lymph nodes and were characterized as Rhizomucor pusillus by polymerase-chain reaction (PCR) - analysis. In addition, invasive pulmonary Aspergillus fumigatus was found and also confirmed by PCR. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first confirmation of

An one-year-old male roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) with abnormal behaviour was shot in order to exclude rabies virus infection. The 12.8 kg weighing animal was emaciated and revealed an asymmetric head with protruding left eye and expositional keratitis. There was a grey whitish soft mass within the caudal nasal cavity, which had infiltrated the frontal cerebrum through the cribriform plate and the retrobulbar tissue through the orbita. Histologically, the mass consisted of a chronic granulomatous inflammation with plentiful fungal hyphae. Fungal culture revealed mold fungi of the zygomycotic

Zygomycosis is an invasive mycotic disease caused by fungi in the class Zygomycetes. Within this class, the most common species associated with infection include Absidia corymbifera, Apophysomyces elegans, Cunninghamella bertholletiae, Rhizomucor pusillus, Rhizopus microsporus var. rhizopodiformis, and Rhizopus arrhizus. These fungi all produce characteristic hyphal forms in tissue that are variable in width, produce haphazard branching, and lack septation. Although these fungi are ubiquitous in the environment, they are opportunists causing invasive disease in compromised hosts with a high mo

Invasive mucormycosis contributes to a high mortality rate in patients with hematological malignancies. When it disseminates to multiple organs, especially to the brain, the prognosis is extremely poor. The traditional antifungal strategies including surgery have less efficacy in patients with hematological malignancies. Here, we describe a case report of a 62-year-old man with refractory lymphoma who developed mucormycosis caused by Rhizomucor pusillus after chemotherapy, which disseminated extensively to the lungs, diaphragm, brain and spleen. He was successfully treated with antifungal agen

This study reports on the discovery of heterothallic mating in Mucor irregularis (formerly Rhizomucor variabilis var. variabilis) and it extends the range of this species from Asia to the United States. We report on a case of primary cutaneous mucormycosis, involving the forearms of a cotton farmer from North Carolina, in which the infection was cured using amphotericin B therapy. Intraspecific crosses between the North Carolina strain DUMC 150.04 and M. irregularis CBS 103.93, the ex-type strain of R. variabilis var. variabilis from China, resulted in the formation of abundant fertile zygospo

Following intranasal inoculation of mice, Rhizomucor pusillus spores are gradually cleared from the lung, with the clearance complete at 30 days. Incubation of R. pusillus spores in vivo for up to 14 days after intranasal inoculation resulted in pulmonary mucormycosis when the mice were then treated with cortisone. Spore-agglutinating IgM antibodies were detected in normal adult mice and R. pusillus-inoculated but not cortisone-treated mice. There was no correlation between antispore antibody titers and spore germination in vitro. The absence of germinated R. pusillus in inoculated but non-cor

Primary cutaneous mucormycosis is uncommon and is extremely rare in immunocompetent young individuals. Here we report a case of necrotising fasciitis due to mucormycosis in an immunocompetent young individual following minor trauma. Mucormycosis must be suspected in any wound that is worsening despite appropriate treatment even in immunocompetent individuals.

The use of enzymes as biocatalysts in organic media is an important issue in modern white biotechnology. However, their low activity and stability in those media often limits their full-scale application. Amphiphilic polymer conetworks (APCNs) have been shown to greatly activate entrapped enzymes in organic solvents. Since these nanostructured materials are not porous, the bioactivity of the conetworks is strongly limited by diffusion of substrate and product. The present manuscript describes two different APCNs as nanostructured microparticles, which showed greatly increased activities of ent

We describe the case of a 19-year-old boy with acute leukaemia who developed primary hepatic zygomycosis. The patient presented with febrile neutropenia and severe abdominal tenderness. Despite the administration of antibiotics and liposomal Amphotericin-B (L-AmB), the CT scan demonstrated an increase in the size of liver lesions. A wide surgical resection was carried out and liver specimens demonstrated a branching, filamentous fungus that was identified as Rhizomucor pusillus by both phenotypic and molecular methods. The patient was treated with L-AmB combined with posaconazole, and deferasi

A 52-year-old man underwent haematopoietic stem-cell transplant for myelodysplastic syndrome; after treatment with voriconazole for invasive aspergillosis, he was diagnosed with invasive zygomycosis caused by Rhizopus microsporus. He died despite treatment with intravenous liposomal amphotericin B and posaconazole. A 5-year-old boy with acute lymphatic leukaemia was diagnosed with invasive zygomycosis at autopsy. In a third case, a 16-year-old boy with acute myeloid leukaemia received repeated courses of empiric antifungal therapy, although the presence of an invasive fungal infection was not

This study employed chitosan (CS) for the electrostatic immobilization of Rhizomucor miehei lipase (RML). The immobilized lipase exhibited an activity retention of 95.43% and formed a stable oil-in-water (O/W) Pickering emulsion with a particle size of 400 nm. With tripalmitin (PPP) as the substrate, ethanol was introduced to react with the enzymatically hydrolyzed palmitic acid (PA), forming ethyl palmitate and consequently enhancing 2-MAG generation. Furthermore, Al(OH)₃ was incorporated into the aqueous phase effectively inhibiting acyl migration. Following separation and purification, a hi

Mucormycosis, also known as "black fungus," is a potentially fatal disorder that causes blurred or double vision, chest pain, and breathing problems. The introduction of novel risk factors and causative agents, as well as the problems with controlling the disease, are all significant problems with mucormycosis in India. It is most common among COVID-19 patients. Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal disease that primarily affects immunosuppressant patients, mainly caused by mold fungi of the genus mucor, rhizopus, rhizomucor, and absidia, which are in the zygomycetes class and the Mucorales order

Infections triggered by filamentous fungi placed in the order Mucorales, phylum Zygomycota, can cause serious harm to immunocompromised patients. Since there is lack of a standardized PCR (polymerase chain reaction) assay for early diagnosis of this fungal infection, this work was aimed to develop a new PCR assay able to detect the presence of Mucorales genera in clinical specimens. Here, we describe a novel diagnostic TaqMan MGB probe assay for precise and rapid detection of the most common clinical species of Mucorales. Zygomycete-specific oligonucleotides were designed to specifically ampli

BACKGROUND: Invasive mold diseases of the central nervous (CNS IMD) system are exceedingly rare disorders, characterized by nonspecific clinical symptoms. This results in significant diagnostic challenges, often leading to delayed diagnosis and the risk of misdiagnosis for patients. Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing (mNGS) holds significant importance for the diagnosis of infectious diseases, especially in the rapid and accurate identification of rare and difficult-to-culture pathogens. Therefore, this study aims to explore the clinical characteristics of invasive mold disease of CNS IMD

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis is an uncommon invasive fungal infection that has a high mortality rate in patients with severe underlying diseases, which leads to immunosuppression. Due to its rarity, determining the incidence and optimal treatment methods for mucormycosis in children is challenging. Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) is a rapid, precise and sensitive method for pathogen detection, which helps in the early diagnosis and intervention of mucormycosis in children. In order to increase pediatricians' understanding of this disease, we conducted a study on the clinical features

The sustainable production of healthy structured lipids (SLs) using oils extracted from agro-industry by-products or non-conventional lipid sources is of utmost importance in the framework of a circular bioeconomy, toward a zero-waste goal. In this study, low-calorie triacylglycerols (TAGs) containing a long-chain (L) fatty acid (FA) at position sn-2 and medium-chain (M) FAs at positions sn-1,3 (MLM type SL) were obtained from virgin cold-pressed milk thistle (51.55% linoleic acid; C18:2), grapeseed (66.62% C18:2), and apricot kernel (68.61% oleic acid; C18:1) oils. Lipase-catalyzed acidolysis
