An atypical extrapulmonary presentation of rhodococcus equi infection in a foal: a case report.

Rhodococcus equi infection in foals is primarily associated with pulmonary disease but may also present with extrapulmonary manifestations (Giguère et al. 2011; Reuss et al. 2009). Hemolytic anemia is a rare and poorly described complication, with only a single previous report of presumed immune-mediated hemolytic anemia in foals affected by R. equi. This case report describes the clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, disease progression, and postmortem examination of a 4-month-old Holsteiner foal with confirmed R. equi infection and severe anemia consistent with a presumed immune-mediat

Bioinformatics Analysis of the Genome of Rhodococcus rhodochrous IEGM 1362, an (-)-Isopulegol Biotransformer.

A genome of Rhodococcus rhodochrous IEGM 1362 was sequenced and annotated. This strain can transform monoterpene alcohol (-)-isopulegol with the formation of two novel pharmacologically promising metabolites. Nine genes encoding cytochrome P450, presumably involved in (-)-isopulegol transformation, were found in the genome of R. rhodochrous IEGM 1362. Primers and PCR conditions for their detection were selected. The obtained data can be used for the further investigation of genes encoding enzymes involved in monoterpene biotransformation.

The catabolism of ethylene glycol by Rhodococcus jostii RHA1 and its dependence on mycofactocin.

Ethylene glycol (EG) is a widely used industrial chemical with manifold applications and also generated in the degradation of plastics such as polyethylene terephthalate. Rhodococcus jostii RHA1 (RHA1), a potential biocatalytic chassis, grows on EG. Transcriptomic analyses revealed four clusters of genes potentially involved in EG catabolism: the mad locus, predicted to encode mycofactocin-dependent alcohol degradation, including the catabolism of EG to glycolate; two GCL clusters, predicted to encode glycolate and glyoxylate catabolism; and the mft genes, predicted to specify mycofactocin bio

Immobilization of Rhodococcus by encapsulation and entrapment: a green solution to bitter citrus by-products.

Debittering of citrus by-products is required to obtain value-added compounds for application in the food industry (e.g., dietary fiber, bioactive compounds). In this work, the immobilization of Rhodococcus fascians cells by encapsulation in Ca-alginate hollow beads and entrapment in poly(vinyl alcohol)/polyethylene glycol (PVA/PEG) cryogels was studied as an alternative to chemical treatments for degrading the bitter compound limonin. Previously, the Rhodococcus strain was adapted using orange peel extract to increase its tolerance to limonoids. The optimal conditions for the encapsulation of

Necrotizing Pneumonia Due To Rhodococcus Hoagii In A Patient With Advanced Retroviral Disease.

Rhodococcus hoagii is a well-known zoonotic disease, especially in foals. Its occurrence in humans is uncommon and usually occurs in immunocompromised patients. We present a case of Rhodococcus hoagii infection resulting in necrotizing pneumonia in a patient with advanced retroviral disease who had defaulted treatment. Effective treatment of Rhodococcus hoagii infection requires a combination of antibiotics. We also highlighted the importance of effective communication between clinicians and microbiologists so that prompt treatment can be initiated to improve patient outcomes.

Rhodococcus equi Joint Sepsis and Osteomyelitis Is Associated With a Grave Prognosis in Foals.

The most common pathologic manifestation of Rhodococcus equi, a gram-positive, facultative intracellular bacterium, is pyogranulomatous pneumonia in foals and weanlings. Hematogenous spread of bacteria may subsequently occur, resulting in joint sepsis, osteomyelitis, or subcutaneous abscessation. Medical records from horses presenting to the Cornell University Equine Hospital from 1998 to 2018 were reviewed for cases diagnosed with R. equi joint and/or bone infection, and information about case progression and outcome were analyzed. We hypothesized that, despite advances in diagnostic imaging,

Photodegradation of RDX in aqueous solution: a mechanistic probe for biodegradation with Rhodococcus sp.

Recently we demonstrated that Rhodococcus sp. strain DN22 degraded hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazine (RDX) (1) aerobically via initial denitration followed by ring cleavage. Using UL 14C-[RDX] and ring labeled 15N-[RDX] approximately 30% of the energetic chemical mineralized (one C atom) and 64% converted to a dead end product that was tentatively identified as 4-nitro-2,4-diaza-butanal (OHCHNCH2NHNO2). To have further insight into the role of initial denitration on RDX decomposition, we photolyzed the energetic chemical at 350 nm and pH 5.5 and monitored the reaction using a combination

Placentitis, fetal pneumonia, and abortion due to Rhodococcus equi infection in a Thoroughbred.

Rhodococcus equi is a rare cause of equine abortion. This report describes pyogranulomatous placentitis and fetal pneumonia in a case of abortion from a Thoroughbred mare. Numerous Gram-positive coccobacilli were noted histologically within macrophages in placental and pulmonary lesions. Rhodococcus equi was isolated in pure culture from the placenta, lung, liver, kidney, and stomach content. This is the first description of placentitis due to Rhodococcus equi infection in a horse.

Horizontal Spread of Rhodococcus equi Macrolide Resistance Plasmid pRErm46 across Environmental Actinobacteria.

Conjugation is one of the main mechanisms involved in the spread and maintenance of antibiotic resistance in bacterial populations. We recently showed that the emerging macrolide resistance in the soilborne equine and zoonotic pathogen Rhodococcus equi is conferred by the erm(46) gene carried on the 87-kb conjugative plasmid pRErm46. Here, we investigated the conjugal transferability of pRErm46 to 14 representative bacteria likely encountered by R. equi in the environmental habitat. In vitro mating experiments demonstrated conjugation to different members of the genus Rhodococcus as well as to

Rhodococcus fascians infection after haematopoietic cell transplantation: not just a plant pathogen?

INTRODUCTION: Rhodococcus spp. have been implicated in a variety of infections in immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts. Rhodococcus equi is responsible for the majority of reported cases, but Rhodococcus erythropolis, Rhodococcusgordoniae and Rhodococcusruber infections have been described. There are no prior reports of human infection with Rhodococcus fascians. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the unexpected finding of R. fascians in liver lesions incidentally noted at autopsy in an immunosuppressed patient status after bone-marrow transplant for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia who died o

Three new serotypes of Rhodococcus equi in Prescott's serotyping system - Short communication.

Three new serotypes were found among Rhodococcus equi strains, which could not be assigned into any of the seven serotypes of Prescott's system. Fortythree R. equi strains out of 44 previously nontypable ones isolated in Hungary could be allocated into one of the three new serotypes using the agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) test. The three new suggested serotypes are serotype 8 (proposed reference strain: HNCMB-138003), serotype 9 (proposed reference strain: HNCMB-138004) and serotype 10 (proposed reference strain: HNCMB-138005). Hyperimmune sera produced in rabbits against the new serotypes a

Biodesulfurization of a system containing synthetic fuel using Rhodococcus erythropolis ATCC 4277.

The burning of fossil fuels has released a large quantity of pollutants into the atmosphere. In this context, sulfur dioxide is one of the most noxious gas which, on reacting with moist air, is transformed into sulfuric acid, causing the acid rain. In response, many countries have reformulated their legislation in order to enforce the commercialization of fuels with very low sulfur levels. The existing desulfurization processes cannot remove such low levels of sulfur and thus a biodesulfurization has been developed, where the degradation of sulfur occurs through the action of microorganisms. Anatomopathological aspects of osteoarticular lesions associated with Rhodococcus equi infection in two foals.

Rhodococcus equi is an important bacterium that affects foals up to six months of age, especially those that are immunocompromised. The main manifestation is pyogranulomatous pneumonia; nevertheless, extrapulmonary lesions have not only been reported, but are not uncommon, including arthritis and osteomyelitis. Despite the widespread occurrence of rhodococcosis, the macro- and microscopic lesions in the musculoskeletal system are still poorly understood, and a detailed study is needed to better understand the pathogenic potential of the organism. The aim of this report is to present the anatom

Mechanisms Underlying Efficient n-Eicosane Degradation and Physiological Adaptation in Rhodococcus erythropolis KB1.

Low temperature limits microbial remediation of petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated environments, yet the physiological basis for long-chain alkane degradation under cold stress remains insufficiently understood. In this study, Rhodococcus erythropolis KB1 was cultured with n-eicosane as the sole carbon source at 4°C, 16°C, and 30°C for 5, 10, and 15 days. Degradation performance, growth-associated traits, surface tension, membrane permeability, redox-energy metabolism, key enzyme activities, and putative GC-MS signals were evaluated. KB1 showed the highest n-eicosane degradation efficiency at

Expression of Rhodococcus erythropolis stress genes in planctonic culture supplemented with various hydrocabons.

Studying Rhodococcus erythropolis stress response is of significant scientific interest, since this microorganism is widely used for bioremediation of oil-contaminated sites and is essential for environmental biotechnology. In addition, much less data was published on molecular mechanisms of stress resistance and adaptation to effects of pollutants for Gram-positive oil degraders compared to Gram-negative ones. This study provided an assessment of changes in the transcription level of the soxR, sodA, sodC, oxyR, katE, katG, recA, dinB, sigF, sigH genes in the presence of decane, hexadecane, cy

A cytochrome P450 system initiates 4-nitroanisole degradation in Rhodococcus sp. strain JS3073.

Nitroanisoles are used widely as synthetic intermediates and explosives. Although bacteria have been reported to degrade 4-nitroanisole (4NA) under aerobic conditions, the key enzymes and the catalytic mechanism have remained elusive. Rhodococcus sp. strain JS3073 was isolated for its ability to grow on 4NA as the sole carbon and energy source. In this study, whole cell biotransformation experiments indicated that 4NA degradation is initiated by O-demethylation to form 4-nitrophenol (PNP), which undergoes subsequent degradation by a previously established pathway involving formation of 1,2,4-b
