Health-promoting effect of dietary supplementation with the red seaweed Mastocarpus stellatus was studied. Its major component is dietary fibre (31.7/100 g dry weight), 72% as soluble fibre, mainly formed by carrageenans, sulphated-galactans of red seaweeds. Thus, rats were fed either a basal- or an algal-supplemented diet (10%). Then, lipid metabolism was assessed in serum, and reducing power measured in serum and caecum by FRAP method. Also, caecal pH was monitored and short chain fatty acids analysed by gas-liquid chromatography. Seaweed intake reduced significantly triglycerides and total

BACKGROUND: The potential of marine algae as a source of antibacterial chemicals has been very promising. Numerous bioactive compounds produced by these organisms can fight off harmful microorganisms. Two marine algae (Chlorophyta: Ulva lactuca, Rhodophyta: Pterocladiella capillacea) were screened for their antibacterial activity against distinct multidrug-resistant bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae. This efficiency is ascribed to the bioactive substances found in these algae, which have the ability to stop the growth of this harmful bacteria. Pterocladiella capillacea is a viable target for the

Eucheumatoids exhibited significant day and night nutrient uptake, with NH4+ increasing linearly, NO3- following Michaelis-Menten kinetics, higher internal NH4+, NO2-, PO4-3 at night, and peak nitrate reductase activity during day. Nutrient physiology of aquatic phototrophs is mostly measured during daytime or experimentally under saturating irradiance with the assumption that nutrient uptake is tightly coupled with photosynthetic activities. At night or under dark condition, when photosynthesis ceases, little is known on the nutrient physiology of these macrophytes. Here, we examined the nutr

BACKGROUND: Red algae have been reported to improve lipid and glucose metabolism in rats. We investigated the effects of Palmaria palmata (P. palmata), a red alga from northern Japan, on lipid metabolism and glycemic control in participants with hypercholesterolemia.
METHODS: We conducted an 8-week, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, and parallel-group comparison trial. The study enrolled Japanese participants with a serum low-density protein cholesterol (LDL-C) ≥120 mg/dL. The participants were randomly assigned to take either capsules containing P. palmata (2 g/day) or placebo ca

Inhibition of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) is one of the key factors to repress high blood pressure. Although many studies have been reported that seaweed protein hydrolysates showed the ACE inhibitory activity, the comprehensive understanding of the relationship was still unclear. In this study, we employed chloroplast genome for in silico analysis and compared it with in vitro experiments. We first extracted water-soluble proteins (WSP) from red alga Grateloupia asiatica, which contained mainly PE, PC, APC, and Rbc, and prepared WSP hydrolysate by thermolysin, resulting that the hyd

Application of synthetic pesticides over decades to control insects, pests, and disease vectors has resulted in negative impacts on environment and health. The current study assessed the toxicological effects of 12 botanicals obtained from 4 different red seaweeds against the dengue vector mosquito Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae). Four species of red seaweeds, namely Laurencia karachiana, Gracilaria foliifera, Jania rubens, Asparagopsis taxiformis, were collected from Karachi coast and extracted with hexane, dichloromethane and methanol. The efficiency of these extracts was determined by

Obesity and diabetes are major metabolic disorders which are prevalent worldwide. Algae has played an important role in managing these disorders. In this study, Gracilaria edulis, a marine red algae, was investigated for antioxidant and hypoglycemic potential using in vitro models. De-polysaccharide methanol extract of G. edulis was sequentially partitioned with hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and antioxidants, and hypoglycemic potentials were evaluated using multiple methods. High antioxidant potential was observed in the ethyl acetate fraction in terms of ferric reducing antioxidant power

Palmaria palmata (dulse) is an edible red alga constituting a potential protein source in human diet. However, previous studies showed that the digestibility of dulse proteins is bad because of the cell-wall encapsulating cytoplasmic proteins and the presence of fibers. The water-soluble xylan, present in high proportions in dulse, could be involved to explain the weak digestibility of proteins. To limit the influence of fibers and to improve the nutritional quality of these proteins, we have treated dulse by physical processes or by fermentation by moulds. After a 30 min predigestion by pepsi

Ice-ice disease caused by pathogenic Vibrio spp. is a major constraint in the aquaculture systems of Kappaphycus alvarezii. The use of beneficial bacteria as biological control agents represents a sustainable alternative to chemical treatments in seaweed aquaculture. In this study, an endophytic bacterium isolated from healthy K. alvarezii thalli, designated VUMS1, was identified as Bacillus altitudinis based on 16 S rRNA gene analysis. VUMS1 exhibited strong antagonistic activity against Vibrio harveyi, V. owensii, and V. alginolyticus, producing inhibition zones ranging from 9.0 to 16.5 mm o

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose public health and ecological risks in aquatic environments. HABs drive the bioaccumulation of a specific family of specialized metabolites known as "kainoids." Kainoid derivatives, such as kainic acid (KA) and domoic acid (DA), are among the most toxic marine-derived metabolites produced by a limited number of algal species. While recent studies have provided insights into the molecular basis of KA and DA production in red algae and diatoms, knowledge of the biosynthesis of kainoids remains insufficient. In a new report published in mBio, Wood-Rocca et al. deco

Marine biomass is a potential resource that contains functional carbohydrates, such as agar, carrageenan, and cellulose, and can be modified for various applications. A novel self-assembled multi-enzyme nanomachine (SAMN) and its whole-cell biocatalyst were developed to target the degradation of marine biomass components and enable consolidated bioprocessing. Compared to each representative single enzyme, the marine biomass-degrading SAMN exhibited an average 1.45-fold higher hydrolytic activity for six of the seven substrates. The modification of SAMN with MglB further enhanced the hydrolytic

We discuss, from the aspect of phylogeny, the interrelationships of the phytolith types in plants from the main taxonomical groups (algae, lichens, horsetails, gymnosperms, and floral plants) with homologues of known proteins of biomineralization. Phytolith morphotypes in various phylogenetic plant domains have different shapes. We found that, in ancient types of plants (algae, horsetails, and gymnosperms), there are fewer different phytolith morphotypes compared to more modern plants (floral plants). The phytolith morphotypes in primitive plants are generally larger than the morphotypes in mo

Current water quality criteria (WQC) regulations on copper toxicity to biota are still based on total dissolved (<0.4 μm membrane filter) copper concentrations with a hardness modification for freshwaters. There are however ongoing efforts to incorporate metal speciation in WQC and toxicity regulations (such as the biotic ligand model-BLM) for copper and other metals. Here, we show that copper accumulation and growth inhibition of the Baltic macroalga Ceramium tenuicorne exposed to copper in artificial seawater at typical coastal and estuarine DOC concentrations (similar to 2-4 mg/L-C as fulvi

There remains today a critical need for new antiviral agents, particularly in view of the alarming increase in drug resistance and associated issues. The marine environment has been a prolific contributor towards the identification of novel therapeutic agents in the recent few decades. Added to this, glycans (or carbohydrate- or sugar-based compounds) have in very recent decades made outstanding contributions to the development of novel therapeutics. This review brings together these significant facets of modern drug discovery by presenting the reported literature on glycans derived from marin

The study objective was to assess the methane (CH4)-mitigating potential (CH4-MP) of an Asparagopsis taxiformis variety (Brominata; Blue Ocean Barns) and evaluate its effects on cow health when fed at increasing dietary inclusion rates (IR) in dairy cows. This paper reports data on the CH4-MP and production performance. In this study, 48 late-lactation cows (mean DIM = 386) blocked by parity were assigned randomly to receive 1 of 4 freeze-dried and pelletized Brominata IR treatments: 0% (CTL), 0.30% (standard IR [SIR]), 0.45% (SIR1.5), and 0.60% of DM (SIR2.0), with mean bromoform concentratio

Photosystem I (PSI) converts light into chemical energy with near-unity quantum efficiency, yet its energy-transfer and charge-separation mechanisms remain debated. Evolution has diversified PSI architectures: Cyanobacterial PSI trimers confine red-shifted pigments to the core, whereas plant PSI-Light Harvesting Complex Isupercomplexes incorporate extensive peripheral red and charge-transfer states that reshape trapping. The unicellular red alga Cyanidioschyzon merolae exemplifies functional diversification across distinct evolutionary branches, combining a photosystem II and plant-like monome

The marine unicellular red alga Rhodosorus marinus is a promising source of the valuable phycobiliprotein phycoerythrin and essential omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), yet the environmental triggers for their optimal co-production remain to be fully elucidated. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of thermal and photic stress in terms of maximizing the yield of these high-value bioactive compounds. R. marinus was cultivated under a range of temperatures (18-24 °C) and light intensities (100-335 µmol photons m-2 s-1) to assess its physiological and biochemical response
