Effect of embelin against 3-nitropropionic acid-induced Huntington's disease in rats.

3-Nitropropionic acid (3-NP) causes severe neurotoxicity in animals, which depicts Huntington's disease (HD) in humans. Embelin, the main active constituent of Embelia ribes, has been reported to possess various pharmacological actions, mainly anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticonvulsant and neuroprotective. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the neuroprotective effect of embelin against 3-NP induced experimental HD in rats. Adult Wistar rats were pretreated with vehicle/embelin (10 and 20mg/kg p.o.) for 7 days. From 8th day onwards, embelin was co-treated with 3-NP (15mg/kg, i.p.)

Anthocyanosides of Vaccinium myrtillus (bilberry) for night vision--a systematic review of placebo-controlled trials.

We have systematically reviewed placebo-controlled trials of V. myrtillus-extracted anthocyanosides for evidence of positive effects on night vision. Searches of computerized databases and citations in retrieved articles identified 30 trials with outcome measures relevant to vision in reduced light. Of these, 12 were placebo-controlled. The 4 most recent trials were all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and were negative in outcome. A fifth RCT and 7 non-randomized controlled trials reported positive effects on outcome measures relevant to night vision. Negative outcome was associated with m

Effects of selected condensed tannins on Cryptosporidium parvum growth and proliferation in HCT-8 cell cultures.

Infections with Cryptosporidium spp. constitute a substantial public health burden and are responsible for widespread production losses in cattle herds. Reducing disease and shedding of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts is an important One Health goal. There are very few therapeutic options available to treat cryptosporidiosis. Interest in plant bioactive compounds to mitigate the spread of anthelmintic resistance in ruminants has led to investigation of these phytocompounds against other parasitic taxa. Condensed tannins (CTs) are plant secondary metabolites that have shown potential against nemat

A defined anthocyanin mixture sourced from bilberry and black currant inhibits Measles virus and various herpesviruses.

BACKGROUND: Anthocyanin-containing plant extracts and carotenoids, such as astaxanthin, have been well-known for their antiviral and anti-inflammatory activity, respectively. We hypothesised that a mixture of Ribes nigrum L. (Grossulariaceae) (common name black currant (BC)) and Vaccinium myrtillus L. (Ericaceae) (common name bilberry (BL)) extracts (BC/BL) with standardised anthocyanin content as well as single plant extracts interfered with the replication of Measles virus and Herpesviruses in vitro. METHODS: We treated cell cultures with BC/BL or defined single plant extracts, purified ant

Extraction of anthocyanins and other phenolics from black currants with sulfured water.

Health benefits of fruits, vegetables, and red wine are attributed to anthocyanins and other phytochemicals. In this research, the extraction of phenolics from black currants was optimized using different SO(2) concentrations (28, 300, 700, 1100, and 1372 ppm), temperatures (6, 20, 40, 60, and 74 degrees C), and solvent to solid ratios (S/S) (6, 20, 40, 60, and 74 mL/g). Surface response methodology was used to optimize yields of anthocyanins and total phenolics, as well as their antiradical and antioxidant activities. The extraction of phenolics varied with the SO(2) concentration, S/S, and t

Electrically enhanced, Nature-Driven microbial attenuation of chromate and dichloromethane in groundwater.

Natural attenuation is a nature-based approach that relies on intrinsic biogeochemical and microbial processes to mitigate mixed heavy metals and organic pollutants in aquifer, yet its efficiency is limited by electron donor scarcity and suppressed microbial activity. Here, a low-energy bioelectrochemical strategy that uses a mild electric field (0.6 V) was introduced to sustainably stimulate the attenuation of chromate [Cr(VI)] and dichloromethane (DCM) co-contamination in groundwater. With minimal electrical input, Cr(VI) and DCM removal reached 95.0 ± 2.6% and 95.2 ± 0.5%, substantially out

Effects of supplementation of garlic with apple pomace or blackcurrant on the gastrointestinal microbial ecosystem of organic pigs after weaning.

Weaning stress compromises piglet immune and digestive development, increasing susceptibility to Escherichia coli (ETEC) infections. We have previously shown that combinations of antibacterial plants alleviate postweaning diarrhea caused by ETEC. Here, we evaluated the effect of feeding garlic combined with either apple pomace or blackcurrant on the gastrointestinal microbial ecosystem of organic weaners three weeks after an ETEC challenge at weaning. The study involved two blocks of 32 pigs (7 weeks; 20 kg BW) per block housed in pairs. The pairs were randomly assigned to four treatments: non

Anti-Inflammatory Activity of an In Vitro Digested Anthocyanin-Rich Extract on Intestinal Epithelial Cells Exposed to TNF-α.

BACKGROUND: The consumption of foods rich in anthocyanins (ACN) have been associated with beneficial properties in chronic inflammatory disorders such as intestinal bowel diseases (IBD). These effects were attributed not only to a direct antioxidant mechanism but also to the modulation of cell redox-dependent signaling. However, ACN bioavailability is low for their poor stability in the digestive tract, so ACN gastrointestinal digestion should be considered. METHODS: To have a more realistic knowledge of the effects of ACN, we performed an in vitro simulated gastrointestinal digestion of an A

Effects of polysaccharide derived from black currant on relieving clinical symptoms of Japanese cedar pollinosis: a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

We investigated the efficacy of the polysaccharide derived from black currant, named cassis polysaccharide (CAPS), for inhibiting Japanese cedar pollinosis symptoms and improving quality of life by a randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 2006. A total of 28 subjects were enrolled in the study, and 10 subjects in each group completed the trial. Although there was no significant difference between the CAPS and placebo group in the weekly mean value of any symptom in the daily symptom diary at any time, a smaller degree of final symptom aggravation was found in the CAPS group. Valorization of Berry Fruit By-Products: Bioactive Compounds, Extraction, Health Benefits, Encapsulation and Food Applications.

The increased production of high-quality berry products in recent years has led to considerable quantities of by-products such as pomace (25-50%), which consists of skin, seeds, stems and leaves. The improper management of pomace can lead to environmental pollution and potential public health problems due to microbial contamination, and storage causes additional processing costs. However, due to their high content of various valuable bioactive compounds (BACs), berry by-products have gained much attention as sustainable and functional ingredients with applications in the food and nutraceutical

Vicia faba L. Pod Valves: A By-Product with High Potential as an Adjuvant in the Treatment of Parkinson's Disease.

Vicia faba L. is a leguminous plant with seeds rich in nutritional compounds, such as polyphenols and L-dopa, a dopamine precursor and first-line treatment for Parkinson's symptoms. Recently, its by-products have been revalued as a sustainable source of bioactive compounds. In this study, aqueous extracts of Lucan broad bean pod valves (BPs) were characterized to evaluate their potential use as adjuvants in severe Parkinson's disease. L-dopa content, quantified by LC-UV, was much higher in BPs than in seeds (28.65 mg/g dw compared to 0.76 mg/g dw). In addition, vicine and convicine, the metabo

Effects of embelin on lipid peroxidation and free radical scavenging activity against liver damage in rats.

The study aimed to evaluate the hepatic antioxidant capacity of embelin (from Embelia ribes) using different antioxidant tests, free radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation in albino rats. Carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄) treatment to rats has been more susceptible to peroxidative damage through production of reactive metabolites, namely trichloromethyl-free radicals (CCl₃• and/or CCl₃• OO•) as measured by thiobarbituric acid reactive species. After the induction of liver damage by CCl₄ intoxication to rats, the concentration of lipid peroxidation was significantly (P ≤ 0.001) higher in

Downstairs drivers--root herbivores shape communities of above-ground herbivores and natural enemies via changes in plant nutrients.

1. Terrestrial food webs are woven from complex interactions, often underpinned by plant-mediated interactions between herbivores and higher trophic groups. Below- and above-ground herbivores can influence one another via induced changes to a shared host plant, potentially shaping the wider community. However, empirical evidence linking laboratory observations to natural field populations has so far been elusive. 2. This study investigated how root-feeding weevils (Otiorhynchus sulcatus) influence different feeding guilds of herbivore (phloem-feeding aphids, Cryptomyzus galeopsidis, and leaf-c
