Augmenting rehabilitation robotics with spinal cord neuromodulation: A proof of concept.

Rehabilitation robotics aims to promote activity-dependent reorganization of the nervous system. However, people with paralysis cannot generate sufficient activity during robot-assisted rehabilitation and, consequently, do not benefit from these therapies. Here, we developed an implantable spinal cord neuroprosthesis operating in a closed loop to promote robust activity during walking and cycling assisted by robotic devices. This neuroprosthesis is device agnostic and designed for seamless implementation by nonexpert users. Preliminary evaluations in participants with paralysis showed that the

ProteoAutoNet: high-throughput co-eluted protein analysis with robotics and machine learning.

Co-fractionation mass spectrometry (CF-MS) enables large-scale profiling of endogenous protein-protein interactions, yet CF-MS data generation is of low throughput and therefore predictive models are often limited by the scarcity and limited diversity of high-quality training data. To address this, we present ProteoAutoNet, a robotic experimental platform integrated with a computational workflow for high-throughput CF-MS analysis. This workflow increases the throughput of sample processing from protein complex to peptide by about two times. The integrated machine learning model incorporates ta

Are the "visual haptics" conferred via robotics non-inferior to actual haptics?

BACKGROUND: Critics often cite the lack of tactile feel as a major drawback of robotic surgery. Although robotic surgeons are believed to develop a sense of "visual haptics" through personal experience combined with the enhanced 3D vision, this phenomenon has not been formally scrutinized. Therefore, our objective was to determine whether surgeons' discernment of objects' physical properties using robotic technology was non-inferior to discernment via surgeons' hands. METHODS: This was a non-randomized parallel group study using an inanimate model consisting of four identical balloons fixed t

Latent Class Analysis of Gameplay Metrics from Youth Playing a Robotics Game.

Game metrics have become a staple component to understanding how players interact with various aspects of the game and whether they comprehend the game mechanics. Despite their intrinsic value, few studies have used this type of objective instrumentation to examine whether users display unique gameplay styles. We used latent class analysis with seven game metric indicators from a robotics game to ascertain whether there are distinct patterns of gameplay. We also validated gameplay styles using measures of persistence and intensity of play. Four gameplay styles were obtained including Fully Eng

The Silent Transformation of Stereotactic Brain Biopsies After the Introduction of Robotics.

BACKGROUND: In frame-based stereotaxy, the design of the frame limits trajectory selection, e.g., to the temporal lobe and posterior fossa. We hypothesise that frame-less neuronavigation and robotic technology might have expanded these stereotactic corridors. METHODS: We analysed 376 frame-based, neuronavigated and robotic brain biopsies. We analysed entry (EP) and target (TP) point coordinates, trajectory lengths (TL) and angles (α1,α2), skin-to-skin time (STS), diagnostic yield and morbidity. RESULTS: Robotics liberated TP and EP selection, enabling trajectories not applicable with the fra

Bioinspired Anti-Freezing Hydrogel With Localized Ice Regulation for Subzero Soft Robotics.

Freezing hydrogels at subzero temperatures severely compromises mechanical flexibility, ionic conductivity, and structural integrity, thereby limiting their application in low-temperature environments. Hydrogel freezing involves both ice nucleation and ice growth; however, simultaneously inhibiting these two processes remains a significant challenge. In nature, freeze-tolerant organisms do not rely on completely preventing ice formation to survive freezing conditions. Instead, they utilize bacterial membrane-anchored ice nucleating protein (BMIP) to promote ice nucleation and ice binding prote

Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery with or without robotics: Examining the evidence.

Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery can be performed with or without robotic assistance. In this issue of the journal, Zheng et al. compare between these two approaches in a propensity-matched study over a 5-year period and show that the two techniques have similar successful short and mid-term outcomes. Although we are proponents of the robotic approach, we agree with their conclusions and discuss in this commentary some of the previously published studies that have shown similar findings.
