Intestinal microbiota in functional bowel disorders: a Rome foundation report.

It is increasingly perceived that gut host-microbial interactions are important elements in the pathogenesis of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID). The most convincing evidence to date is the finding that functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) may develop in predisposed individuals following a bout of infectious gastroenteritis. There has been a great deal of interest in the potential clinical and therapeutic implications of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in IBS. However, this theory has generated much debate because the evidence is largely based on breath tes

Rome III survey of irritable bowel syndrome among ethnic Malays.

AIM: To survey irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) using Rome III criteria among Malays from the north-eastern region of Peninsular Malaysia. METHODS: A previously validated Malay language Rome III IBS diagnostic questionnaire was used in the current study. A prospective sample of 232 Malay subjects (80% power) was initially screened. Using a stratified random sampling strategy, a total of 221 Malay subjects (112 subjects in a "full time job" and 109 subjects in "no full time job") were recruited. Subjects were visitors (friends and relatives) within the hospital compound and were representative o

Detection of Monkeypox Virus DNA in Airport Wastewater, Rome, Italy.

Environmental surveillance can be a complementary tool for detecting pathogens circulating in communities. We detected monkeypox virus DNA in wastewater from Italy's largest airport by using real-time PCR assays targeting the G2R region and F3L and N3R genes and sequencing. Wastewater surveillance can be quickly adapted to investigate emerging threats.

Systematic Review of Pediatric Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders (Rome IV Criteria).

Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) are common among children and may cause a significant symptom burden. The Rome criteria are symptom-based guidelines for the assessment of FGID among children and adults. The aim of this systematic review was to estimate the prevalence of FGID utilizing the revised Rome IV criteria. Nine health databases were searched. The inclusion criteria were: prospective FGID prevalence data using the Rome IV criteria for children up to 18 years, and the exclusion criteria were: cohorts with known gastrointestinal or organic conditions. The data were presented

Second-trimester induced abortions in two tertiary centres in Rome.

OBJECTIVE: Demand for second-trimester induced abortions (STIAs) increases in Italy. For these procedures, prostaglandins alone were used until 2010, when mifepristone became available. The present study compares the two modalities, and investigates the reasons for STIAs. METHODS: The records of all such procedures performed at the Department of Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Urology of the 'Sapienza' University (Rome), between January 2004 and December 2012, and of all those done at the 'San Filippo' Hospital (Rome), between January 2010 and December 2012, were analysed. Data gathered included

Rome Consensus Conference - statement; human papilloma virus diseases in males.

BACKGROUND: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a very resistant, ubiquitous virus that can survive in the environment without a host. The decision to analyse HPV-related diseases in males was due to the broad dissemination of the virus, and, above all, by the need to stress the importance of primary and secondary prevention measures (currently available for women exclusively). The objective of the Consensus Conference was to make evidence-based recommendations that were designed to facilitate the adoption of a standard approach in clinical practice in Italy. METHODS: The Sponsoring Panel put a ser

Current management of functional dyspepsia: impact of Rome III subdivision.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a highly prevalent disease characterized by symptoms originating from the gastroduodenal region in the absence of underlying organic disease. The Rome III consensus made a distinction between meal-induced and meal-unrelated symptoms and proposed subdivision of FD into postprandial distress syndrome and epigastric pain syndrome. The applicability of this subdivision and the impact on management are areas of active research. So far, empirical approaches are still employed for the treatment of FD, although various therapeutic modalities for FD have been explored; acid

Endoscopic findings in patients with chronic bloating/abdominal distension and the effect of the transition from the Rome III to Rome IV criteria: a multicenter cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Bloating/abdominal distension is a common gastrointestinal symptom. However, the abnormal endoscopy results associated with bloating/abdominal distension and its influencing factors in outpatients remain unclear. METHODS: This multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted in 100 tertiary care hospitals nationwide and involved the use of a mobile applet to complete questionnaires to record the medical history of outpatients with bloating/distension. This was followed by an analysis of the upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopic detection results and the factors influencing the

High prevalence of primary bile acid diarrhoea in patients with functional diarrhoea and irritable bowel syndrome-diarrhoea, based on Rome III and Rome IV criteria.

BACKGROUND: A high prevalence of primary bile acid diarrhoea (BAD) has been reported for Rome III defined irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)-diarrhoea and functional diarrhoea. We determined whether this still applies under the contemporaneous Rome IV criteria, given that the latter characterises IBS-diarrhoea as having more frequent abdominal pain compared with previous iterations, whilst no longer recognising abdominal discomfort. METHODS: Patients referred for a 75SeHCAT test completed a baseline questionnaire comprising, i) demographic data, ii) risk factors for BAD (inflammatory bowel diseas

Forgotten lobotomies in Rome: new evidence of psychosurgery in postwar Italy.

The history of psychosurgery, perhaps the most controversial venture in clinical neuroscience's past, has long been written without Rome. While leucotomies and lobotomies performed have been documented in northern and southern Italian centres, the Italian capital - despite being the birthplace of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and home to two major state psychiatric institutions - has remained largely absent from historical accounts. Drawing on previously unexamined archival materials from Italy and the United States, and despite substantial gaps in the surviving documentation-including the i

Between Disability and Illness in Ancient Rome - The Case of Emperor Claudius.

Claudius, the fourth emperor of Rome, suffered from multiple health issues, including an unsteady gait, persistent tremors in his arms and head, and a speech impediment that caused him to stutter and mispronounce words since childhood. Despite possessing average or even above-average intellectual abilities, he was considered unfit for public office (cursus honorum) due to these physical conditions. Based on remaining historical records, modern scholars have proposed several possible diagnoses, including cerebral palsy, dystonia, transverse myelitis, or Tourette syndrome. While earlier scholars

Evaluation of Immunity to Measles in a Cohort of Medical Students in Rome, Italy.

BACKGROUND: Measles is a highly contagious viral disease with serious complications. Currently, in Italy, measles vaccination is not mandatory for health care workers (HCWs) and medical students, and the free offer of the Measles Mumps Rubella (MMR) vaccine is the only national prevention measure to increase the coverage rate among these subjects. AIMS: The aim of our study was to evaluate the impact on vaccination rate of the National Plan of Vaccine Prevention (NPVP) implemented in 2017. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective observational study that evaluated the measles-specific I

How to use Rome IV criteria in the evaluation of esophageal disorders.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In 2016, the Rome IV process and criteria were published. They provide a system to standardize patient diagnostic requirements for clinical studies and pharmaceutical trials on functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), which are now called disorders of gut-brain interaction (DGBI). Although the Rome criteria have limitations in clinical practice, an understanding of the criteria can help clinicians to manage symptoms in patients with DGBI, and with organic diseases as well. RECENT FINDINGS: In this report, the Rome IV criteria for esophageal DGBI, the updated algorithm

The Application of the Rome IV Criteria to Functional Esophagogastroduodenal Disorders in Asia.

The Rome criteria were amended as Rome IV. For functional esophageal disorders, the exclusion criteria have been more specifically revised based on further understanding of other esophageal disorders, including eosinophilic esophagitis and spastic and hypercontractile motor disorders. Another revised point is the more restrictive definition of gastroesophageal reflux disease, indicating that sensitivity to a physiological reflux burden may be placed more firmly within the functional group. For functional dyspepsia (FD), only minor changes were introduced, mainly to improve specificity. Among t
