Prevalence and risk factors of root caries in the geriatric population in the rural sector.

INTRODUCTION: Increasing age, long-term deleterious habits, and increased bone resorption leading to the gingival recession have become a significant reason for poor geriatric oral health among which root caries are the most prevalent ones among the Indian population. METHODOLOGY: A cross-sectional study was conducted among the geriatric population above 60 years of age and those who gave voluntary consent for participating in the study were included in the study and were briefed about the questionnaire. The self-administered questionnaire was given and complete oral examination was done. Res

Influence of cementum on the demineralization and remineralization processes of root surface caries in vitro.

The influence of the nature of the root surface on the demineralization and remineralization processes within artificial fluoride-treated caries lesions was investigated using microscopic and X-ray microanalytical methods. Traces of fluoride were detected in the outer parts (about 25 micrometers) of the lesions after the application of fluorides, and a high mineral content was proved for the same region by means of microanalytical calcium estimation. The location of this mineral-rich band in relation to the root surface was deeper into the root depending on the existence and thickness of a cem

Remineralization by a monofluorophosphate dentifrice in vitro of root dentin softened by artificial caries.

Artificial caries-softened dentin lesions in root surfaces were treated with 50% slurries of a monofluorophosphate (MFP) dentifrice or a placebo dentifrice twice daily for ten days. Between dentifrice treatments, the lesions were kept in a remineralizing solution. Both treatments resulted in statistically significant remineralization, with the MFP dentifrice being significantly better than the placebo. Deposition of new mineral from the MFP dentifrice occurred about equally at or within the surface zone and at the deepest part of the lesion. Mineral deposition from the placebo appeared to be m

Development of a nomogram for root caries risk assessment in a Chinese elderly population.

BACKGROUND: Root caries is a common oral disease among the elderly, and its prevalence increases year by year with the deepening of population aging. Existing caries risk assessment models do not fully consider the specific risk factors for root caries in the elderly population. This study aims to develop a predictive model for root caries risk in the elderly to facilitate early identification and personalized intervention. METHODS: This study included 310 individuals over the age of 60. Data on oral health status, frailty level, cognitive function, and sociodemographic factors were collected

In Vitro Models Used in the Formation of Root Caries Lesions-A Review of the Literature.

The management of root caries remains a challenge for clinicians due to its unique anatomical location and structure. There is increasing interest in utilising artificial root caries lesions to develop new strategies for remineralisation. An ideal protocol has not yet been agreed upon. The aim of this review is to provide a structured overview of previously reported in vitro root caries models. The literature was screened and mined for information mainly on substrate selection, model systems utilised, and variables used in the models. Human roots (60%) were the most frequently used substrates,

Engineering a dysbiotic biofilm model for testing root caries interventions through microbial modulation.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to engineer and optimise a dysbiotic biofilm model to develop in vitro root caries for investigating microbial modulation strategies. The model involved growing complex biofilms from a saliva inoculum collected from four volunteers using two strategies. In the first strategy ("pre-treatment strategy"), bovine root slabs were used, and two natural compounds were incorporated at time 0 of the 10-day biofilm experiment, which included sucrose cycles mimicking the cariogenic environment. In the second strategy ("post-treatment strategy"), mature biofilms were grown in

In vitro root caries progression measured by 125I absorptiometry: comparison with chemical analysis.

Radiation from a 125I source and a non-image-forming detector was used for non-destructive measurements of root caries progression. Blocks were cut parallel to the cementum surface of unexposed human roots. These blocks were then individually demineralized in under-saturated calcium phosphate solutions over an 84-hour period. In order for the in vitro root surface demineralization to be followed, the changes in transmission (delta T) through the blocks were measured, by 125I absorptiometry, eight times during the course of the experiment. Chemical analyses of the calcium output (delta Ca) from
