Rotator cuff injury in contact athletes.

The causes and incidence of rotator cuff injuries in patients under the age of 40 has not been clearly established. The present study focuses on a group of 10 male contact athletes with rotator cuff injuries related to trauma sustained during football (ages from 24 to 36 years). Symptoms included pain and dysfunction in all 10 patients and a positive shrug sign in 8 of 10. The diagnoses for these patients were two isolated contusions, five partial-thickness tears, and three full-thickness tears. Surgery was performed on all patients after nonoperative treatment failed. Three partial-thickness

Pyarthrosis simulating ruptured rotator cuff syndrome.

A 50-year-old black man was admitted with a diagnosis of a ruptured rotator cuff syndrome two weeks after an injury to the right shoulder and treatment by intra-articular steroid injection. At operation pus and necrotic debris were found in the shoulder joint, but the rotator cuff was anatomically intact. Surgical debridement, irrigation, and intravenous antibiotics resulted in good recovery with satisfactory function. The pyarthrosis apparently resulted from the preoperative intra-articular injection.

Effects of resistance exercises on rotator cuff muscle mechanical characteristics in shoulders with and without rotator cuff tears.

BACKGROUND: Rotator cuff tears are the primary cause of shoulder pain, often managed with resistive exercise. Understanding how rotator cuff muscles respond to low-intensity rehabilitation-based exercise is critical for optimizing rehabilitation strategies, yet these responses remain poorly characterized. METHODS: This study investigated changes in shear wave speed, cross-sectional area, and strength of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles following a 30-repetition isometric contraction protocol at 20% of isometric volitional contraction in shoulders with and without rotator cuff tears

Classification and clinical significance of acromial spur in rotator cuff tear: heel-type spur and rotator cuff tear.

UNLABELLED: Acromial spurs reportedly relate to the impingement syndrome and rotator cuff tears. We classified the morphologic characteristics of the acromion (shape and thickness) and acromial spurs and determined whether they correlated with rotator cuff tears. We measured acromial shape and thickness using simple radiography and MR arthrography or CT arthrography in 106 patients with full-thickness rotator cuff tears and in 102 patients without tears. Acromial spurs could be classified morphologically into six types: heel, lateral/anterior traction, lateral/anterior bird beak, and medial. W

Texture Analysis of Routine Shoulder MRI for Predicting Postoperative Rotator Cuff Repair Integrity After Arthroscopic Rotator Cuff Repair.

Introduction Rotator cuff retear remains a major complication of arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (ARCR) and necessitates practical imaging-based methods for preoperative risk stratification. This study investigated whether texture features (TFs) extracted from routine shoulder MRI can predict postoperative tendon integrity, including the intermediate Sugaya type III category. Methods This retrospective study included 31 patients who had undergone ARCR. On preoperative shoulder MRI, the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles were manually segmented on a single oblique sagittal Y-view slice us

Can clinical assessment differentiate partial thickness rotator cuff tears from full thickness rotator cuff tears? A secondary analysis.

Purpose: Shoulder pain causes significant disability, with rotator cuff disease as a common diagnosis. Differentially diagnosing partial tears of the rotator cuff tendons is difficult despite use of imaging and clinical examination. Our objective was to determine if a clinical assessment framework could discriminate between patients with partial and full thickness tears.Materials and Methods: Pre-operative baseline data from two randomized controlled trials of 452 adult patients awaiting rotator cuff repair were analyzed in this secondary analysis. Nineteen items from a pre-defined clinical as
