OBJECTIVE: To investigate the epidemiological characteristics and climate-sensitive transmission patterns of rotavirus (RV), adenovirus (AdV), and RV-AdV coinfections among children with acute gastroenteritis in Wuhan, China, during the post-COVID-19 era.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective time-series study of 53,088 pediatric patients tested for RV and AdV from April 2020 to August 2024. Age-stratified positivity rates were analyzed alongside temporal trends. Daily meteorological data (temperature, relative humidity, wind speed) and air pollutants were incorporated into a generalized addi

Rotaviruses are the most common cause of severe viral gastroenteritis in early childhood worldwide. Thus, the objectives of our study were to determine the molecular epidemiology and the clinical features of rotavirus gastroenteritis in Tunisia. Between January 2003 and April 2007, a prospective study was conducted on 788 stool samples collected from children under 12 years of age who were suffering from acute gastroenteritis. Rotavirus was detected by multiplex RT-PCR in 27% (n = 213) of samples, among them 79.3% (n = 169) cases were monoinfections. The frequency of rotavirus infections was s

Rotavirus and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infections represent up to 30% of the totality of nosocomial infections in paediatric wards. We studied the importance of these infections in the paediatric wards of the University Hospital Center of Poitiers, France, from October 1996 to September 1998. We defined as nosocomial an infection acquired after 3 days of hospitalization for rotavirus and after 7 days for RSV. The 274 cases of children presenting rotavirus gastroenteritis or RSV infection within this period were studied. Rotavirus was detected in stools by using an agglutination test a

OBJECTIVES: Rotavirus A (RVA) remains the primary cause of acute severe gastroenteritis associated with high rates of childhood hospitalization and mortality worldwide. The prevalence of RVA infection varies within low-income countries. In addition, its genetic diversity may vary among regions and may affect its prevalence. To control the emergence of new strains of RVA circulating in the Republic of Congo, it is essential to know the diversity of both G and P genotypes, which could render the vaccine less effective. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and genotype diversit

We attempted to produce diarrhoea experimentally in the newborn calf by orally injecting 17 colostrum-deprived calves with two serotypes of Escherichia coli Ent+ K99+, a rotavirus and a coronavirus. With E. coli alone, a dose of 2 x 10(8) bacteria administered 24 hours after birth causes a mild attack of diarrhoea, whereas 1 x 10(10) bacteria leads to dehydration and death. An inoculation of rotavirus is followed by diarrhoea which always contains large quantities of rotavirus. These animals were anorectic for a time, but none was dehydrated or died. With coronavirus, there were large quantiti

OBJECTIVES: Rotavirus (RV) is one of the most significant pathogens associated with childhood diarrhoeal deaths worldwide. Elevated cytoplasmic calcium is required for RV replication, but the underlying mechanisms responsible for calcium influx remain poorly understood. The Calcium-sensing receptor (CaSR) is an important Ca2+ sensor that regulates the transport of Ca2+ into or out of the extracellular space by affecting the status of Ca2+ ion channels on the membrane of cells. Currently, the function of CaSR in RV replication is unclear.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We evaluated the mRNA and protei

We describe community-acquired rotavirus illness in 1359 children hospitalized at 12 centers in Canada between January 2005 and December 2007. The median age was 1.5 years. Almost half (48.6%) had significant dehydration, almost one-fifth (19%) had clinical sepsis and 7% had seizures at presentation. The median hospital stay was 3.4 days. Severe clinical presentations are less commonly described in surveillance programs.

Rotavirus (RV) infection has become a significant public health risk worldwide, but the specific molecular mechanisms of the mucosal immune response have not been elucidated. Dendritic cells (DCs), professional antigen-presenting cells, have a pivotal role in linking innate and adaptive immunity. In the present study, we found that TIR domain-containing adapter-inducing interferon-β (TRIF) is critical for the activation of DCs to antagonize RV infection. TRIF deficiency limited DCs maturation in the spleen and DCs differentiation in MLNs during porcine rotavirus (PRV) infection. Further studie

Rotavirus infection is a major cause of acute gastroenteritis in children, which is characterized by fever, emesis, and diarrhea. In some children, rotaviral infection can spread beyond the gastrointestinal tract and affect the nervous system, kidneys, liver, or pancreas. There are relatively few longitudinal studies of such long-term sequalae. One area of interest has been damage to pancreatic beta islet cells, the lack of which causes type 1 diabetes mellitus. This chronic disease can be life threatening, especially in young children, and is associated with lifelong elevated risks of cardiov

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a cutaneous mucosal disorder characterized by extended necrosis and detachment of the epidermis affecting <10% of the body surface, caused by drugs or infections. The authors report a case of a girl with Depakine resistant epilepsy, who develops a SJS in the third week of introducing lamotrigine. The girl also presents an acute diarrheal disease with double viral etiology - rotavirus and norovirus. The clinical image comprises polymorphic erythematous maculopapular exanthema with vesicular and bullous elements, with ulcerations and desquamations at the level o

The mucosal tissues of the gastrointestinal tract are the main portal entry of pathogens such as rotavirus (RV), which is a leading cause of death due to diarrhea among young children across the globe and a major cause of severe acute intestinal infection in livestock animals. The interactions between intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) and immune cells with RVs have been studied for several years, and now, it is known that the innate immune responses triggered by this virus can have both beneficial and detrimental effects for the host. It was demonstrated that natural RV infection in infants a

The authors describe the results of observation and clinico-laboratory examination of patients during seasonal rises of the rotavirus infection incidence in 5 districts of the Moscow region in 1984-1987. The diseases ran their courses in the form of gastroenteritis and enteritis and were marked by a great number of the grave patterns (42-46%), mainly in children of the first three years of life, by a high percentage (77.5%) of the aggravated premorbid status of patients with the grave patterns. The rotavirus nature of diarrheas was supported by the data of direct electron microscopy, ELISA, an

Viral infections are described as modifying host gene expression; however, there is limited insight regarding rotavirus (RV) infections. This study aimed to assess the changes in intestinal gene expression after RV infection in a preclinical model, and the effect of 2-fucosyllactose (2'-FL) on this process. From days 2 to 8 of life, rats were supplemented with the dietary oligosaccharide 2'-FL or vehicle. In addition, an RV was inoculated on day 5 to nonsupplemented animals (RV group) and to 2'-FL-fed animals (RV+2'-FL group). Incidence and severity of diarrhea were established. A portion from

Cellular immunity against rotavirus in children is incompletely understood. This review describes the current understanding of T-cell immunity to rotavirus in children. A systematic literature search was conducted in Embase, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Global Health databases using a combination of "t-cell", "rotavirus" and "child" keywords to extract data from relevant articles published from January 1973 to March 2020. Only seventeen articles were identified. Rotavirus-specific T-cell immunity in children develops and broadens reactivity with increasing age. Whilst occurring in close associ

Recent investigations suggested pigeon associated Rotavirus Typ A genotype G18P[17] (RVA) as a causative agent of the classical 'young pigeon disease' (YPD). YPD was first described in the late 1980 s as an acute, mainly seasonally recurring disorder of mostly juvenile domestic pigeons (Columba livia) with clinical signs such as anorexia, dairrhea, vomiting, congested crops, weight loss and occasionally mortality. Various studies in the past indicated a multifactorial nature of YPD. Several pathogens, such as pigeon circovirus 1, avian adenoviruses and Escherichia coli were also suggested, but

Rotavirus is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) in young children. Bacillus clausii (B. clausii) is a spore-forming probiotic that is able to colonize the gut. A mixture of four B. clausii strains (O/C, T, SIN and N/R) is commonly used for the treatment of AGE, and it has been demonstrated that it can reduce the duration and severity of diarrhea in children with AGE. Few studies have sought to characterize the mechanisms responsible for such beneficial effects. Intestinal effects of probiotics are likely to be strain-specific. We conducted a series of in vitro experiments inv

BACKGROUND: Acute gastroenteritis caused by bacteria, virus and parasite is an important cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Rotavirus and norovirus have been recognized as the most common pathogens causing acute gastroenteritis among children. However, there is still no valuable data about infections of rotavirus and norovirus in children in Ji'nan, an eastern city in China. The aims of the present study are to determine the incidence of rotavirus and norovirus associated acute gastroenteritis in Ji'nan among children, to characterize rotavirus and norovirus st

The patterns of gene expression and the phenotypes of lymphocytes in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from children with diarrhea caused by rotavirus and healthy children were compared by using DNA microarray, quantitative PCR, and flow cytometry. We observed increased expression of a number of genes encoding proinflammatory cytokines and interferon or interferon-stimulated proteins and demonstrated activation of some genes involved in the differentiation, maturation, activation, and survival of B lymphocytes in PBMC of patients with rotavirus infection. In contrast, we observed a con
