Combination measles, mumps, rubella and varicella vaccine.

A comparative clinical trial was conducted in 15- to 17-month-old healthy children to compare an investigational combination measles, mumps, rubella, varicella (MMRV) vaccine v standard measles, mumps, rubella vaccine followed 6 weeks later with the varicella (MMR + V) vaccine. Both the MMRV and MMR + V vaccine schedules stimulated virtually 100% seroconversion for all component viruses. Mean antibody titers were similar for each virus component in the two vaccine groups. Clinical reactivity postimmunization was also similar with 25% to 29% morbilliform rashes, 12% to 25% mild papulovesicular

Some current issues relating to rubella vaccine.

At the time of licensure in 1969, available data indicated that rubella vaccines were safe, noncommunicable, and effective. Since vaccine virus could cross the placenta and infect the fetus, cautious use of the vaccines in childbearing-age women was recommended. Over the past 15 years, additional information about the vaccines has been accumulated. This article provides an update of data on (1) the risk and degree of joint symptoms following vaccination and revaccination, (2) the duration of vaccine-induced immunity, (3) the protective effect of low levels of vaccine-induced antibody, and (4)

Survey of rubella knowledge and acceptability of rubella vaccination among Brazilian adults prior to mass vaccination.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate knowledge of rubella and acceptability of vaccination and identify sources of health information among brazilian adults to inform communication strategies for a national vaccination campaign to eliminate rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). METHODS: From 5-8 July 2008 a qualitative telephone survey was conducted among a nonprobabilistic sample of brazilian adults 18 to 65 years of age (n = 1 023) from all five geographic regions of Brazil to measure knowledge of rubella and willingness to receive the vaccine and to identify sources of health information. Effectiveness of Rubella vaccine in a rubella outbreak in Guangzhou city, China, 2014.

BACKGROUND: WHO recommends the use of rubella-containing vaccine (RCVs) to prevent rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS). Most licensed rubella vaccines in use globally are based on RA27/3 strains and have estimated vaccine effectiveness (VE) rates of 95-100%. In contrast, China uses a BRD-II strain-based rubella vaccine. Few field studies have been conducted that estimate VE of China's RCV. On March 17, 2014, a rubella outbreak was reported in a middle school in Guangzhou city, China. We conducted an investigation to understand reasons for the outbreak, and we used that investigation

Measles vaccination before the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine.

At the beginning of the 1960s, it was clear that a vaccine against measles would soon be available. Although measles was (and remains) a killer disease in the developing world, in the United States and Western Europe this was no longer so. Many parents and many medical practitioners considered measles an inevitable stage of a child's development. Debating the desirability of measles immunization, public health experts reasoned differently. In the United States, introduction of the vaccine fit well with Kennedy's and Johnson's administrations' political commitments. European policymakers procee

Varicella vaccines and measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella vaccine.

OBJECTIVES: To present an up-to-date review of studies investigating the efficacy, adverse events and vaccination regimens of the varicella vaccine and the new presentation combined with the vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella. SOURCES OF DATA: Bibliographic review of the MEDLINE and LILACS databases covering the period 1999 to 2006. SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS: The varicella vaccine protects 70 to 90% of immunized children against any form of varicella zoster infection, but the efficacy against severe forms is higher (95 to 98%). This is a well-tolerated vaccine that causes few reactions. Si

Historical analysis of birth cohorts not vaccinated against rubella prior to national rubella vaccination campaign, Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Brazil conducted mass rubella vaccination campaigns to meet disease elimination goals by 2010. An analysis of rubella vaccination opportunities was conducted to target population groups with concentrations of unvaccinated individuals. METHODS: Rubella vaccination strategies for all 27 states were reviewed between 1992 and 2006. Yearly vaccination coverage was calculated by dividing number of doses of measles-rubella or measles-mumps-rubella vaccines administered by census estimates of target populations. For annual birth cohorts (1967-2005), percentages of persons not vaccinated p

Congenital rubella syndrome in infants of women vaccinated during or just before pregnancy with measles-rubella vaccine.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Measles and Rubella Control Campaign was conducted in Iran in December 2003 targeting both males and females 5 to 25 yr old using measles-rubella vaccine. During the campaign, some pregnant women received vaccine during the first trimester of pregnancy or some others became pregnant shortly thereafter. The goal of this study was to evaluate the risk of congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) among the infants born to the vaccinated mothers. METHODS: A total of 106 pregnant women, who had received vaccine during the first trimester of pregnancy or become pregnant less than th

Health economics of rubella: a systematic review to assess the value of rubella vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Most cases of rubella and congenital rubella syndrome (CRS) occur in low- and middle-income countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) has recently recommended that countries accelerate the uptake of rubella vaccination and the GAVI Alliance is now supporting large scale measles-rubella vaccination campaigns. We performed a review of health economic evaluations of rubella and CRS to identify gaps in the evidence base and suggest possible areas of future research to support the planned global expansion of rubella vaccination and efforts towards potential rubella elimination and

Rubella seroprevalence in an unvaccinated population in Izmir: recommendations for rubella vaccination in Turkey.

BACKGROUND: The European Advisory Group on the Expanded Program on Immunization of WHO has recommended that by 2010 or earlier congenital rubella should be well-controlled or eliminated in all countries in Europe. Debate on the introduction of rubella vaccine into national immunization schedules continues to occur, and data on rubella and congenital rubella syndrome in Turkey are insufficient. OBJECTIVE: To determine age-specific rubella seroprevalence in the 1- to 29-year-old unvaccinated population in Izmir, Turkey. METHODS: A total of 600 unvaccinated persons 1 to 29 years old were select

Rational use of rubella vaccine for prevention of congenital rubella syndrome in the Americas.

Rubella is a viral disease with minor morbidity and few complication unless it is contracted by a pregnant woman. Rubella infection during the first trimester of pregnancy often leads to fetal death or severe congenital defects (congenital rubella syndrome, CRS). Rubella remains endemic in many countries of Latin America and the Caribbean. It has been estimated that 20,000 or more infants are perhaps born with CRS each year in Latin American and Caribbean countries. While the inclusion of rubella vaccination into routine childhood immunization will decrease rubella virus circulation among youn

Seroprevalence of rubella and immunogenicity following rubella vaccination in adolescent girls in India.

INTRODUCTION: Serologic surveys conducted in different countries indicate that rubella is a worldwide infection. Several such sero surveys conducted in India have also confirmed that 6-47% of women are susceptible to rubella infection. The current study was conducted on 1,329 female adolescents in 12 districts of Maharashtra, India, to assess their serological status in terms of rubella exposure. METHODOLOGY: After enrollment, a pre-vaccination blood sample was collected from the participants followed by rubella vaccination (R-vac). Adverse events were monitored for the next 6-8 weeks, at whi

Parity of women contracting rubella in pregnancy. Implications with respect to rubella vaccination.

Data from the National Congenital Rubella Surveillance Programme showed that 44% of children with congenital rubella reported to the programme were born to primiparae. This high proportion is thought to be due to the fact that there was a two-fold increase in the rate of abortion for rubella in pregnancy for women with two or more children. This higher incidence of congenital rubella in firstborns emphasises the need for rubella vaccination prior to a woman's first pregnancy.
