OBJECTIVES: Three objectives guided this study: (1) to test whether a brief, two-week running intervention changes heart rate variability (HRV) and mental-health parameters; (2) to examine whether running alone versus in groups differentially affects these outcomes; and (3) to assess whether participants' gender moderates these effects.
DESIGN: 131 young adults with sedentary lifestyles were randomized to an individual (solo) running condition, a group-running condition, or a waitlist control, and were assessed before and after the two-week intervention.
METHODS: Primary self-report outcomes

The objective of this study was to ascertain the incidence and most prevalent types of injuries sustained by runners over the preceding 12 months and to examine how injury rates vary according to sex, running experience, running distance, and running type. The study included 303 runners. Data were collected through a questionnaire completed face-to-face before/after running events. Independent t-tests compared demographic data, chi-square tests evaluated injury rates based on running-related factors, and binary logistic regression assessed the combined effects of these factors. Fifty-three per

Bone stress injuries occur in populations who engage in repetitive loading, such as distance runners and military recruits. The second metatarsal is a common bone stress injury site. Running speed and load carriage are modifiable factors which may influence metatarsal loading. The aim of this study was to determine how running at preferred, 90% of preferred, and 110% of preferred speed, with and without a weight vest carrying 10% body mass, influences second metatarsal bone stress. Data were collected from 28 runners (14 female, 14 male) during barefoot running using motion capture cameras, a

Inertial measurement units (IMU) constitute a light and cost-effective alternative to gold-standard measurement systems in the assessment of running temporal variables. IMU data collected on 20 runners running at different speeds (80, 90, 100, 110 and 120% of preferred running speed) and treadmill inclination (±2, ±5, and ±8%) were used here to predict the following temporal variables: stride frequency, duty factor, and two indices of running variability such as the detrended fluctuation analysis alpha (DFA-α) and the Higuchi's D (HG-D). Three different estimation methodologies were compared:

Some individuals with a transtibial amputation (TTA) may not have access to running-specific prostheses and therefore choose to run using their daily-use prosthesis. Unlike running-specific prostheses, daily-use prostheses are not designed for running and may result in biomechanical differences that influence injury risk. To investigate these potential differences, we assessed the effect of amputation, prosthesis type, and running speed on joint work and ground reaction forces. 13 people with and without a unilateral TTA ran at speeds ranging from 2.5 m/s to 5.0 m/s. People with TTA ran using

PURPOSE: To examine muscle oxygenation during running with and without blood flow restriction (BFR).
METHODS: Fifteen aerobically trained males randomly completed four, three-minute running bouts at 70%BFR, 80%BFR, and 90%BFR of their top speed with BFR and 100%NOBFR of their top speed without BFR. Oxygenated hemoglobin (O2Hb), deoxygenated Hb (HHb), total Hb (tHb), Hb difference (HbDiff) and muscle tissue oxygenation (StO2) were assessed continuously throughout the running bouts. Separate two-way, 4 (Intensity [70%BFR, 80%BFR, 90%BFR, 100%NOBFR]) × 3 (Time [120, 150, and 180 s]), repeated-me

BACKGROUND: Cost of exercise increases as a function of incline up to +15% and directly proportional to slope above +15%. Trail running racing consist of significant uphill locomotion at submaximal intensities, but the reliability of submaximal uphill treadmill running tests has not yet been established in ultra-trail runners.
METHODS: Twenty-three male ultra-trail runners (maximal oxygen consumption (V̇O<inf>2max</inf>) 59.7±6.5 ml∙min-1∙kg-1) completed two uphill and one flat Submaximal Treadmill Running Test (STRT) separated by 7 days each. Uphill STRT test-retest reliability was measured

This study evaluated the effects of a top-tier carbon plated shoe with highly responsive foam (CP-shoe) on changes in running economy (RE) and running speed at lactate threshold (LT) before, during, and after prolonged running. Ten male distance runners (half-marathon time: 75 ± 3 min) completed a series of tests. Initially, two graded treadmill tests were undertaken in a well-rested state while wearing either a CP-shoe or non-carbon plated shoe (NCP-shoe) to determine RE and LT-speed (LTCP and LTNCP). On separate days, participants then performed three 80-min runs in randomized order: twice a

Establishing the links between running technique and economy remains elusive due to high inter-individual variability. Clustering runners by technique may enable tailored training recommendations, yet it is unclear if different techniques are equally economical and whether clusters are speed-dependent. This study aimed to identify clusters of runners based on technique and to compare cluster kinematics and running economy. Additionally, we examined the agreement of clustering partitions of the same runners at different speeds. Trunk and lower-body kinematics were captured from 84 trained runne

This study aimed to compare running biomechanics and biomechanical variability across 3 run segments and between conditions for 5-km outdoor overground and indoor treadmill running. Seventy-one recreationally-active adults (31F, 40 M; age: 37 ± 11 years; body mass index: 22.9 ± 2.5 kg/m2) completed aerobic fitness assessments at baseline (VO2max), outdoor overground 5 km runs on a standardized route, and indoor treadmill 5 km runs on a motorized system (12.6 ± 4.9 days apart). Wearable sensors recorded step-by-step spatiotemporal, kinetic, and kinematic biomechanics. Repeated measures analyses

BACKGROUND: Hamstring strain injuries are associated with significant time away from sport and high reinjury rates. Recent evidence suggests that hamstring injuries often occur during accelerative running, but investigations of hamstring mechanics have primarily examined constant speed running on a treadmill. To help fill this gap in knowledge, this study compares hamstring lengths and lengthening velocities between accelerative running and constant speed overground running.
METHODS: We recorded 2 synchronized videos of 10 participants (5 female, 5 male) during 6 accelerative running trials a

Freeman, BW, Talpey, SW, James, LP, Opar, DA, and Young, WB. Common high-speed running thresholds likely do not correspond to high-speed running in field sports. J Strength Cond Res 37(7): 1411-1418, 2023-The purpose of this study was to clarify what percentage of maximum speed is associated with various running gaits. Fifteen amateur field sport athletes (age = 23 ± 3.6 years) participated in a series of 55-meter running trials. The speed of each trial was determined by instructions relating to 5 previously identified gait patterns (jog, run, stride, near maximum sprint, and sprint). Each tri

The objective of this study was to explore the changes in running kinematics and economy during running at different intensities 1 and 24 hours after a muscle-damaging bench-stepping exercise. Healthy, physically active adult women were recruited for this study. The subjects' running kinematics, heart rate, gas exchange, minute ventilation, and perceived exertion were continuously recorded during the increasing-intensity running test on a treadmill for different testing conditions: a control condition and 1 and 24 hours after the bench-stepping exercise test. Two muscle damage markers, muscle

Although the issue of children running away from child welfare system (CWS) occurs in various contexts and has detrimental consequences, to our knowledge, it has received limited attention in academic research and practical interventions. This scoping review examines risk factors and motivations for running away among children in the CWS, drawing on 33 studies published between 1991 and 2025. The findings reveal that key demographic risk factors associated with running away from CWS were identified as older age and urban residence. The effects of gender and race/ethnicity remain inconsistent a

Fatigue induces changes to running form resulting in movements that are less efficient. Reducing the amount of fatigue and its subsequent effect on form is valuable for improving running performance. It is unknown what effects compressive clothing has on musculature; however, there have been claims that it may reduce fatigue. The aim of this study was to determine whether compressive tights or running shorts are more beneficial for improving performance when running to exhaustion. Eleven runners ran at their current five-kilometre race pace on a treadmill to voluntary exhaustion in a repeated

While others have suggested that action sports offer avenues of escape from neoliberal imperatives like maximizing health and self-regulation, we argue that even the most mainstream of sports-amateur road running-holds similar potential. Using data from 20 "running reflections," we explore running's everyday affective intensities using Deleuzo-Guattarian theory. We conceptualize running as a machinic assemblage that shapes what the body can do in myriad ways. We argue that while the running machine produces neoliberal imperatives and the disciplined subjectivity of "runner," those almost inart

This study investigates the specific influence of step frequency (SF) and speed on the coordination between pelvic and thigh movements. Eight recreational male runners ran at different SFs and speeds on an instrumented treadmill. The coordination between the pelvis and thigh segments was analyzed using modified vector coding in the sagittal and frontal planes (FPs). Our findings show that hip range of motion increases as a function of SF in the sagittal plane. Pelvic tilt plays a compensatory role in hip extension, particularly at lower SFs. In the FP, pelvic roll increased at lower SFs, where

Constipation commonly affects adults and most often results from benign conditions. Certain associated symptoms (e.g., rectal bleeding or weight loss) raise concern for structural pathology and prompt further evaluation. Intussusception uncommonly affects adults and typically presents with abdominal pain and vomiting. Rarely, intussusception manifests with constipation as the primary symptom. We present a case of a patient with new onset constipation who was only able to induce bowel movements after exercising, a compensatory behavior in the setting of recurrent intussusception because of a Va

BACKGROUND: Traditional running shoes with heel-to-toe drops is thought to be a contributor to increased patellofemoral joint stress, which is proposed as a mechanism of patellofemoral pain.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Is there an increase in patellofemoral joint stress when running in shoes with drops compared to running in shoes without a drop?
METHODS: Lower limbs kinematics and ground reaction force were collected from eighteen healthy runners during over-ground running in shoes with 15 mm, 10 mm, 5 mm drops, and without a drop. Patellofemoral joint force and stress were calculated from the kinem

PURPOSE: Much like running on a slope, running against/with a horizontal traction force which either hinders/aids the forward motion of the runner creates a shift in the positive and negative muscular work, which in turn modifies the bouncing mechanism of running. The purpose of the study is to (1) investigate the energy changes of the centre of mass and the storage/release of energy throughout the step during running associated with speed and increasing hindering and aiding traction forces; and (2) compare these changes to those observed when running on a slope.
METHODS: Ground reaction forc
