Successive introduction of four new vaccines in Rwanda: High coverage and rapid scale up of Rwanda's expanded immunization program from 2009 to 2013.

As the pace of vaccine uptake accelerates globally, there is a need to document low-income country experiences with vaccine introductions. Over the course of five years, the government of Rwanda rolled out vaccines against pneumococcus, human papillomavirus, rotavirus, and measles & rubella, achieving over 90% coverage for each. To carry out these rollouts, Rwanda's Ministry of Health engaged in careful review of disease burden information and extensive, cross-sectoral planning at least one year before introducing each vaccine. Rwanda's local leaders, development partners, civil society organi

University students' contribution to advancing malaria eradication efforts in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a life-threatening disease caused and spread by female Anopheles mosquitoes. It is a global health concern, especially in tropical areas, where the WHO Africa region published 94% of malaria cases and 95% of deaths related to malaria in children under 5 years old. In Rwanda, malaria continues to affect the population, where rural communities are at risk. This narrative review has the purpose of showcasing the university student contribution to advancing malaria eradication in Rwanda. METHODOLOGY: The narrative review acquired secondary data accessed from different peer-

Gossypiboma Mimicking Ovarian Mass: A Rare Case Report from Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Gossypiboma, also referred to as textiloma, denotes a retained surgical item most often cotton gauze left inadvertently within the body following a surgical procedure. The condition can provoke granulomatous and suppurative reactions leading to abscess formation, fistulae, adhesions, or mass effect. Its estimated incidence ranges from 1 in 1000 to 1 in 1500 intra-abdominal operations. CASE 1: A 32-year-old woman presented with a progressively enlarging lower abdominal mass associated with mild pain. She had a history of cesarean section 16 years earlier. Understanding Malaria Treatment Adherence in Rwanda: Implications for Artemisinin Resistance.

Prompt diagnosis and effective treatment are key malaria interventions that rely on community knowledge and adherence to treatment. With the emergence of artemisinin resistance in Rwanda, ensuring optimal malaria treatment practices within communities is essential. This study examined malaria knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) among febrile patients at government clinics to identify factors affecting influencing malaria treatment practices. A cross-sectional study was conducted in six health facilities in moderate to high malaria transmission areas of Rwanda. Patients or caregivers of c

Genetic polymorphism of Plasmodium falciparum circumsporozoite protein in Kigali, Rwanda.

INTRODUCTION: Malaria remains a major public health challenge across sub-Saharan Africa, with Plasmodium falciparum responsible for the vast majority of cases and deaths. In Rwanda, although control measures have led to significant progress, malaria continues to be endemic, with urban centers like Kigali experiencing continuous transmission. With the recent rollout of malaria vaccines such as RTS,S and R21, understanding the genetic variability of vaccine-targeted antigens is essential for anticipating and enhancing vaccine performance. METHODS: This study investigated the genetic diversity o

Association between Periodontitis and Hypertension among Adult Population in Rwanda.

Background/Objectives: Mortality due to various non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, is increasing globally. Studies have reported that periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disorder caused by oral pathogens, is a potential risk factor for hypertension. These pathogens can invade arterial walls, leading to vascular inflammation and endothelial dysfunction, which then increases the likelihood of developing hypertension. However, evidence of the association between periodontitis and hypertension remains limited. Therefore, the aim of this study is to determine whether periodontitis

Increase in Kelch 13 Polymorphisms in Plasmodium falciparum, Southern Rwanda.

Artemisinin resistance in Plasmodium falciparum is associated with nonsynonymous mutations in the Kelch 13 (K13) propeller domain. We found that 12.1% (8/66) of clinical P. falciparum isolates from Huye district, Rwanda, exhibited K13 mutations, including R561H, a validated resistance marker. K13 mutations appear to be increasing in this region.

Using electronic medical records for HIV care in rural Rwanda.

Partners In Health (PIH) implemented an electronic medical record (EMR) system in Rwanda in 2005 to support and improve HIV and TB patient care. The system holds detailed patient records, accessible to clinicians through printed reports or directly via a computer in the consultation rooms. Ongoing assessment of data quality and clinical data use has led multiple interventions to be put in place. One such evaluation cycle led to the implementation of a system which identified 15 previously undiagnosed pediatric patients with HIV. Another cycle led to an EMR intervention which helped to decrease

Case Series of Anterolateral Thigh Free Flap Reconstruction in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: The anterolateral thigh free flap is a versatile reconstructive option for lower limb and head and neck defects. It provides a large skin paddle with a reliable vascular pedicle-the descending branch of the lateral circumflex femoral artery-and is ideal for covering complex soft tissue defects. Its minimal donor site morbidity, along with the option to include muscle or fascia, makes it a versatile choice for reconstruction of various anatomical sites. METHODS: All 3 patients included in this case series were selected after assessing that their defects could not be covered with lo

Characteristics of Genitourinary Fistula in Kigali, Rwanda; 5-Year Trends.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the characteristics of women presenting with genitourinary fistula over a 5-year period in Kigali, Rwanda. Genitourinary (GU) fistula is a devastating condition that can result from difficult vaginal deliveries or as a surgical complication. Rwanda has seen notable increases in cesarean section rates as a result of a successful universal health care system. It is unclear how the increase in cesarean section rates may influence the types of fistula diagnosed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted of women presenting for evaluation to the Internationa
