Development and external validation of a novel nomogram for predicting cancer-specific survival in patients with ascending colon adenocarcinoma after surgery: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to develop and validate a novel nomogram to predict the cancer-specific survival (CSS) of patients with ascending colon adenocarcinoma after surgery. METHODS: Patients with ascending colon adenocarcinoma were enrolled from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database from 1973 to 2015 and randomly divided into a training set (5930) and a validation set (2540). The cut-off values for age, tumour size and lymph node ratio (LNR) were calculated via X-tile software. In the training set, independent prognostic factors were identified using univariate

Development and validation of a nomogram to predict cancer-specific survival in elderly patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma: a population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroid carcinoma (TC) is the most common endocrine tumor in the human body. Papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) accounts for more than 80% of thyroid cancers. Accurate prediction of elderly PTC can help reduce the mortality of patients. We aimed to construct a nomogram predicting cancer-specific survival (CSS) in elderly patients with PTC. METHODS: Patient information was downloaded from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were used to screen the independent risk factors for patients with PTC. The nomogram

Is the Number of National Database Research Studies in Musculoskeletal Sarcoma Increasing, and Are These Studies Reliable?

BACKGROUND: Large national databases have become a common source of information on patterns of cancer care in the United States, particularly for low-incidence diseases such as sarcoma. Although aggregating information from many hospitals can achieve statistical power, this may come at a cost when complex variables must be abstracted from the medical record. There is a current lack of understanding of the frequency of use of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database and the National Cancer Database (NCDB) over the last two decades in musculoskeletal sarcoma research and w

Assessment of the AJCC staging system of pheochromocytomas/paragangliomas.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the performance of the AJCC 8th staging system for pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas (PPGLs) based on a population-based cohort. METHODS: Surveillance, epidemiology, and end results (SEER)-18 registry database was reviewed, and patients with PPGLs diagnosed 2004-2015 were reviewed. AJCC stage for each patient was reconstructed from the collaborative stage dataset. Kaplan-Meier survival estimates according to the AJCC stage were reviewed, and multivariable Cox regression analysis was conducted to determine the impact of AJCC stages on overall and cancer-

Novel predictive tools and therapeutic strategies for patients with initially diagnosed glottic cancer in the United States.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to identify valuable prognostic factors, build clinical prediction nomograms, and recommend the optimal therapeutic strategy for patients with initially diagnosed glottic cancer. METHODS: Patients were extracted from the SEER database. Cox regression analyses, survival analyses, an internal validation, the propensity score analysis, and the competing risk analysis were performed. RESULTS: Nine overlapped factors were considered as valuable prognostic factors. Furthermore, nomograms were established for clinical prediction models to assess the 1-, 3-,

Radical prostatectomy improves survival in selected metastatic prostate cancer patients: A North American population-based study.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether radical prostatectomy might result in better survival than external beam radiation therapy in metastatic prostate cancer patients. METHODS: Newly diagnosed metastatic prostate cancer patients with M1a/b substages, treated with radical prostatectomy or external beam radiation therapy were abstracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results database (2004-2016). Temporal trend analyses, propensity score matching, cumulative incidence plots, multivariate competing risks regression models and landmark analyses were used. RESULTS: Of 4280 patients, 954 (22.3%

Trends in Early Mortality From Multiple Myeloma: A Population-Based Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Despite significant improvements in multiple myeloma (MM) treatment modalities, patient mortality early in the course of disease has been identified as a persistent phenomenon with variable reported rates and causes. Trends in early mortality over time have not been clearly defined. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The Surveillance Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database was used to identify adult patients with MM between 1975 and 2015. Association of available sociodemographic factors with all-cause and MM-specific early mortality (death within 6 months after the diagnosis of MM) was

The Impact of Multiple Primary Rules on Cancer Statistics in Canada, 1992 to 2012.

INTRODUCTION: Several sets of multiple primary rules have been used in Canada to determine whether a cancer is new and little is known of the impact on cancer statistics. We examine the effect of rules on the magnitude and trend of age-standardized incidence rates (ASIRs) of cancer in Canada between 1992 and 2012. METHODS: Cancer- and sex-specific ASIRs were estimated using Canadian Cancer Registry (CCR) rules and the more conservative International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) rules. CCR- and IARC-based ASIRs and trends were compared using rate ratios (CCR:IARC) and joinpoint analysi

Cancers coded as tongue not otherwise specified: relevance to surveillance of human papillomavirus-related cancers.

Data from US population-based cancer registries have shown increasing incidence rates for cancer of the base of the tongue, interpreted as related to the epidemic of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, but rates could be underestimated due to miscoding of some base of tongue cancers to tongue "not otherwise specified" (NOS). Tongue NOS was the most commonly coded subsite among incident (2000-2011) invasive cancers of the oral tongue (tongue excluding base of tongue and lingual tonsil which together comprise the posterior one-third of the tongue) in the 18 Surveillance, Epidemiology and End R

Epidemiology of breast cancer in young women.

Breast cancer is a rare disease in young women, yet is the leading cause of cancer deaths in all ethnic groups in the United States and many parts of the world. The epidemiology for breast cancer in young women is reviewed, focusing on women under 40, prior to the recommended screening age. Specific age comparison groups used and results for young women vary in the literature, yet there are some common results. Young women have low incidence rates of breast cancer compared to older women. However, cancer incidence increases at a faster rate with increasing age in young women. Their cancers ten

Surveillance for cancers associated with tobacco use--United States, 1999-2004.

PROBLEM/CONDITION: Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. The 2004 Surgeon General report found convincing evidence for a direct causal relationship between tobacco use and the following cancers: lung and bronchial, laryngeal, oral cavity and pharyngeal, esophageal, stomach, pancreatic, kidney and renal pelvis, urinary bladder, and cervical cancers and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). This report provides state-level cancer incidence data and recent trends for cancers associated with tobacco use. Because information on tobacco use was

Cancer in primary immunodeficiency diseases: Cancer incidence in the United States Immune Deficiency Network Registry.

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the overall and site-specific incidence of cancer in subjects with primary immunodeficiency diseases (PIDD) enrolled in the United States Immune Deficiency Network (USIDNET) registry compared with age-adjusted cancer incidence in the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results Program (SEER) database. OBJECTIVE: We hypothesized that subjects with PIDD would have an increased incidence of cancer due to impaired immune function. METHODS: Overall and site-specific cancer incidence rates were evaluated in subjects with PIDD (n = 3658) enrolled in the USIDNET registry from

Recent improvement in completeness of incidence data on acute myeloid leukemia in US cancer registries.

A limitation of data prior to 2010 on incidence of leukemia in US population-based cancer registries is that acute myeloid leukemia (AML) diagnosed as progression (transformation) from a previously diagnosed myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), myeloproliferative neoplasm (MPN, other than polycythemia vera), or chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) was not reportable. Data were used from a research database for the 18 cancer registries of the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) Program, and from all registries in the US Cancer Statistics (USCS) database. Analyses compared the age-standardize

The number and ratio of positive lymph nodes are independent prognostic factors for patients with major salivary gland cancer: Results from the surveillance, epidemiology, and End Results dataset.

INTRODUCTION: To investigate whether the positive lymph node number (PLNN) and positive lymph node ratio (PLNR) could predict the prognosis of patients with major salivary gland cancer (MSGC) and to identify the optimal cutoff points for these variables that stratify patients according to their risk of survival. METHODS: We used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database to identify all patients with MSGC between 1988 and 2014. A logistic regression analysis was carried out to evaluate the risk factors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) in MSGC. The X-tile program was used t

Advances and disparities in survival of childhood and adolescent cancers.

BACKGROUND: We analyzed trends in survival of children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer in the United States from 1975 to 2022 using the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) 8 and 17 databases. Our goal was to provide an updated overview of outcomes and highlight disparities to guide future research. METHODS: Data were obtained from the SEER 8 and 17 registries for patients diagnosed at 0 to 19 years. Overall survival (OS) was stratified by race/ethnicity, diagnosis, and population density. Temporal trends in five-year OS were evaluated usi

Underreporting and misclassification of urinary tract cancer cases on death certificates.

We compared the diagnoses for decreased cases with urinary tract cancer reported to the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program with their underlying cause of death reported on death certificates. Deaths for a substantial proportion of cases were ascribed to noncancer causes (bladder, 48%; kidney, 28%; renal pelvis, 37%; and other urinary tract, 38%), which decreased with advancing stage at diagnosis and increased with length of survival. In general, cancer deaths were more likely to be recorded to the predominant subsite within an organ. Only 5.5% of renal pelvis cancer pat
