OBJECTIVE: We investigated the effects of dietary intervention with canola or olive oil in comparison with commonly used refined oil in Asian Indians with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: This was a 6-month intervention study including 93 males with NAFLD, matched for age and body mass index (BMI). Subjects were randomized into three groups to receive olive oil (n=30), canola oil (n=33), and commonly used soyabean/safflower oil (control; n=30) as cooking medium (not exceeding 20 g/day) along with counseling for therapeutic lifestyle changes. The BMI, fasting blo

This study was carried out primarily to determine whether the feeding of lecithin (polyenylphosphatidylcholine) has systemic effects on metabolism of cholesterol and triglycerides in patients with endogenous hypertriglyceridemia (type 4 hyperlipoproteinemia). Ten patients were studied during control periods and lecithin feeding. In the former period, 7 g of safflower oil were added to the diet to balance the addition of 10 g of lecithin in the latter period. Lecithin feeding had no influence on levels of plasma cholesterol and triglycerides, or lipoprotein-cholesterol, transport of VLDL-trigly

Linoleic acid (LA) administered orally as safflower oil (SFO), which is 76% LA, produced remission in 6 out of 8 dogs with mycosis fungoides (MF). Following each feeding of SFO on 5 successive days to a normal dog peak plasma levels of non-esterified (free) LA in excess of 200 microM were observed. No clinical toxicity was observed from the SFO feedings in the normal or MF animals at the levels of SFO (3 ml/kg) used in these studies. However, a marked rise in white blood cells (WBC) and lymphocytes and a marked transient drop in the serum glutamine transaminases SGOT and SGPT was noted both in

Antibodies to malondialdehyde (MDA)-modified low-density lipoprotein (LDL) are transiently reduced during the postprandial period in patients with atherosclerotic heart disease. Previous experiments using mixed meals high in fat have found reductions of approximately 20% within 2 hours. This study was designed to reveal if this phenomenon was due uniquely to saturated fats. Using a standardized immunoassay for the detection of circulating levels of autoantibodies (AAbs) against MDA-modified LDL, we examined the acute changes in AAb levels during 6 hours of postprandial lipemia in 10 men with k

Groups of rats were fed from weaning with diets containing 5% by wt of hydrogenated coconut oil (HCO), safflower oil, or a concentrate of ethyl elaidate and linolelaidate (TRANS) as the sole source of dietary fat. Fatty acid composition of the lipid classes from serum, liver, heart, and kidney was determined, and the serum lecithin: cholesterol acyl transferase (LCAT) activities were assayed for each animal. Serum LCAT activity was increased by both the HCO and TRANS diets in the early stages of the development of an essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiency but was suppressed in the animals of th

This case report describes a 23-yr-old woman with Crohn's disease who developed sinus bradycardia 4 hr after initiation of total parenteral nutrition with lipids through a peripheral vein. The bradycardia persisted for 1 wk, with only slight improvement when the lipids were held for two 4-hr periods. The heart rate began to improve when lipids were changed from 10 to 20%, and continued to rise after Synthroid was started. The possible relationships between nutritional and thyroid status, as well as lipids and heart rate are discussed.

PURPOSE: To determine whether there is an association between dietary omega-3 (omega-3) fatty acid intake, age, and intraocular pressure (IOP) caused by altered aqueous outflow.
METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were fed either omega-3-sufficient (omega-3(+)) or omega-3-deficient (omega-3(-)) diets from conception. The diets had 7% lipid content. The omega-3(+) diet contained safflower, flaxseed, and tuna oils (5.5:1.0:0.5), and the omega-3(-) diet contained safflower oil only. Intraocular pressure was measured at 5 to 40 weeks of age under light anesthesia (omega-3(+), n = 39; omega-3(-), n = 48)

Response surface methodology (RSM) was used to optimize the formulation of a nanoemulsion for central delivery following parenteral administration. A mixture of medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) and safflower seed oil (SSO) was determined as a sole phase from the emulsification properties. Similarly, a natural surfactant (lecithin) and non-ionic surfactant (Tween 80) (ratio 1:2) were used in the formulation. A central composite design (CCD) with three-factor at five-levels was used to optimize the processing method of high energy ultrasonicator. Effects of pre-sonication ultrasonic intensity (A)

The link between dietary fats and cardiovascular diseases has necessitated a growing research interest in palm oil, the second largest consumed vegetable oil in the world. Palm oil, obtained from a tropical plant, Elaeis guineensis contains 50% saturated fatty acids, yet it does not promote atherosclerosis and arterial thrombosis. The saturated fatty acid to unsaturated fatty acid ratio of palm oil is close to unity and it contains a high amount of the antioxidants, beta-carotene, and vitamin E. Although palm oil-based diets induce a higher blood cholesterol level than do corn, soybean, safflo

Dietary fish oils rich in 20:5(5,8,11,14,17) and 22:6(4,7,10,13,16,19) are known to replace arachidonic acid [20:4(5,8,11,14)] and to improve the immunopathology of New Zealand mice. However, in humans, similar dietary strategies may be impractical because of the high levels of fish oils required. In contrast, we believe that beneficial effects in humans may be attainable using new exotic fatty acids. Toward this end, we have focused on 5,11,14-eicosatrienoic acid [5,11,14-ETA, 20:3(5,11,14)]. This fatty acid is structurally analogous to 20:4(5,8,11,14) but lacks the delta-8 double bond essent

Accumulating evidence indicates that oronasal sensory stimulation influences nutrient metabolism. This work examined the effects of oral exposure to dietary fat on postprandial plasma triacylglycerol (triglyceride) concentrations. Fifteen (six male, nine female) healthy adults were exposed to each of four treatments presented in random order. After ingestion of a 50-g load of safflower oil in capsules (to preclude oral exposure to the fat), they masticated and expectorated 1) crackers with cream cheese, 2) crackers with nonfat cream cheese, 3) crackers alone, or 4) nothing. Blood samples were

Reuse of cooking oils at high temperatures is a widespread culinary practice that alters their composition and compromises food safety. This study examined the chemical and biological consequences of thermal oil degradation and evaluated the hepatoprotective potential of a natural lemon-ginger blend. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) profiling of fresh and re-heated corn and safflower oils revealed a marked decline in phytosterols, tocopherols, and unsaturated fatty acids, along with the accumulation of harmful byproducts such as amides, monoacylglycerols, fatty acyl nitriles, and a

Administration of 1.5 mg aflatoxin B1 (AFB1)/kg in DMSO as a single i.p. dose to 80 mg phenobarbital/kg i.p. for 3 d pretreated chickens showed significant decrease in the levels of electron transport components and drug metabolizing enzymes compared to phenobarbital administration alone. Induction of mixed function oxidase enzymes due to phenobarbital was not affected by the AFB1 pretreatment. AFB1 administration to 20 mg benzo(a)pyrene/kg in safflower seed oil i.p. for 2 d pretreated chickens showed significant decrease in cytochrome b5 and drug metabolizing enzymes when compared with benzo(

Inadequate intake of lutein is relevant to a higher risk of age-related eye diseases. However, lutein has been barely incorporated into foods efficiently because it is prone to degradation and is poorly bioaccessible in the gastrointestinal tract. Microfluidics, a novel food processing technology that can control fluid flows at the microscale, can enable the efficient encapsulation of bioactive compounds by fabricating suitable delivery structures. Hence, the present study aimed to evaluate the stability and the bioaccessibility of lutein that is encapsulated in a new noodle-like product made

The effects of various polyunsaturated/saturated (P/S; 0.29-2.74) and n-6/n-3 (0.49-11.21) ratios of dietary fatty acids and of phenobarbital (PB) stimulation on the activity of liver microsomal mixed-function oxidase (MFO) system were studied in rats using a combination of palm oil, safflower oil and fish oil concentrate. When the n-6/n-3 ratio was kept constant (4.6-4.9) without induction by PB, the highest P/S ratio (2.74) tended to increase the basal PB-uninduced MFO activities; while the PB-induced MFO activities were elevated as the dietary P/S ratio increased. This definitely indicates

Male Sprague-Dawley rats were injected with 90 mg/kg of streptozotocin at 2 days of age. After weaning, they were put on a fat-free diet supplemented with safflower oil (S), a combination of S and linseed oil (L) or a combination of evening primrose oil (E) and L for 8 weeks. Plasma glucose levels and glycosuria were significantly elevated in all 3 groups of diabetic rats in comparison with the corresponding control rats. The percentage of arachidonic acid (20:4n-6) in plasma phospholipids of the S + L and E + L groups was similar to that of the S group and did not differ between control and d

Effects of dietary fats include the development of arteriosclerosis in humans and experimental animals, in addition to hypercholesterolemia. None of the preceding studies explicitly compared the effects of individual fatty acids. To address these issues, we chose exogenously hypercholesterolemic (ExHC) rats and apolipoprotein (apo) E deficient mice as a model for atherosclerosis and assessed the individual role of fatty acids in animals' susceptibility to atherosclerosis. The rats fed on the diet containing DHA or EPA, compared with those fed on the safflower oil (SO) diet, lowered serum chole

Rations including high amounts of corn silage are currently very common in dairy production. Diets with corn silage as forage source result in a low supply of essential fatty acids, such as α-linolenic acid, and may lead to low conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) production. The present study investigated the effects of abomasal infusion of essential fatty acids, especially α-linolenic acid, and CLA in dairy cows fed a corn silage-based diet on performance, milk composition, including fatty acid (FA) pattern, and lipid metabolism from late to early lactation. Rumen-cannulated Holstein cows (n = 40)

BACKGROUND: DHA has been shown to be important for foetal brain development, optimal development for motor skills and visual acuity in infants. Newborns born prematurely are at increased risk for DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) insufficiency because they may not have benefited from a full trimester of the mother's lipid stores and have very limited ability to synthesize DHA. Moreover, within the first 2-3 weeks of life, the main sources of lipids for most prematurely delivered infants are soyabean/safflower/olive oil emulsions which are rich in n-6 fatty acids and do not contain DHA.
