Co-infection of Dipetalonema species (Nematoda: Onchocercidae) in a captive squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) from China: first molecular characterization of Dipetalonema freitasi.

Infection of Dipetalonema species in Neotropical primates has been documented extensively. However, there is limited information on the molecular characterization of the genus Dipetalonema, specifically regarding the identification of co-infections. In this study, we report the co-infection of Dipetalonema gracile and D. freitasi in a captive squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) from a zoo in China and provide the first molecular characterization of D. freitasi. Morphological analysis identified thirteen adult worms, consisting of nine D. gracile and four D. freitasi. Phylogenetic analyses based

Corticotropin-releasing factor in olivocerebellar climbing-fiber system of monkey (Saimiri sciureus and Macaca fascicularis): parasagittal and regional organization visualized by immunohistochemistry.

An antiserum directed against the human form of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) was utilized for immunohistochemical visualization of the distribution of this peptide in the inferior olivary nucleus and cerebellum of 2 monkey species (Saimiri sciureus, Macaca fascicularis). Colchicine pretreatment was not used. In both species, immunoreactivity was evident in the vast majority of neurons in the inferior olivary nucleus, with perikarya in the medial accessory olive exhibiting especially intense staining. In cerebellum, no labeled perikarya were present, but immunoreactive axons exhibiting

Tissue expression of antigens of ABH blood groups in species of New World Monkeys (Aotus infulatus, Callithrix jacchus, Sapajus apella and Saimiri sciureus).

ABH antigens are histo-antigens, but were first described on the surface of human erythrocytes. They are found in those cells only in great apes and humans, while in more primitive animals they are found in tissues and body fluids. ABH antigens are mainly distributed in tissues that are in contact with the external environment and may serve as ligands for pathogens in tissues or block their connection. Description of the distribution of these molecules in non-human primate tissues is restricted to a few tissues and species. This paper describes the expression of human A, B and H type antigens

The efficacy of combined therapy of arsenic trioxide and alpha interferon in human T-cell leukemia virus type-1-infected squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1)-associated adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) has a poor prognosis owing to its intrinsic resistance to chemotherapy. Although zidovudine (AZT) and alpha interferon (IFN-alpha) give rise to some response and improve the prognosis of ATLL, alternative therapies are needed. Arsenic trioxide (As(2)O(3)) has been shown to synergize with IFN-alpha in arresting cell growth and inducing apoptosis of ATLL cells in vitro. In this study, we evaluated the toxicity and the efficacy of this combined treatment in HTLV-1-infected squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sc

Herpesvirus saimiri open reading frame 14, a protein encoded by T lymphotropic herpesvirus, binds to MHC class II molecules and stimulates T cell proliferation.

Herpesvirus saimiri (HVS) is an oncogenic, lymphotropic, gamma-herpesvirus that transforms human and simian T cells in vitro and causes lymphomas and leukemias in various species of New World primates. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the HVS genome revealed an open reading frame with 22% amino acid identity to the mouse mammary tumor virus 7 superantigen. In this study, we demonstrate that this open reading frame, HVS14, encodes a heavily glycosylated protein that is secreted. Both the HVS14 present in the supernatant of transfected cells and a chimeric HVS14.Fc fusion protein were found to bi

Effects of single-use and group-use enrichment on stereotypy and intragroup aggressive and affiliative behaviors of a social group of squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) at the Singapore Zoo.

Four food-based enrichment devices were used to test the effects of single-use and group-use enrichment devices on stereotypy, intragroup aggression, and affiliation in a compatible group of 5 squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus). All enrichment devices were found to reduce overall stereotypic behavior from baseline levels (without enrichment). The occurrence of stereotypic behavior differed between individual squirrel monkeys with an adult female showing the highest level of stereotypic behavior. This individual also showed the highest usage of enrichment devices, and stereotypic behavior was

Immunohistochemical identification of ACE-2 (SARS-COV II entry mechanism) in the gastrointestinal tract, kidney and lung of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) and squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus).

SARS-Cov-2 is a corona virus that causes COVID-19 disease, a viral infection responsible for the pandemic decreed by the World Health Organization in March 2020. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE-2) functions as the main receptor for SARS-Cov-2. The study aimed to detect the expression of ACE-2 in the gastrointestinal tract, kidney, and lung in the rhesus monkeys and squirrel monkeys. The sections from 18 rhesus monkey and 17 squirrel monkeys were incubated with rabbit polyclonal antibody to ACE2 (ab65863). In the lung of the rhesus monkeys, the presence of ACE-2 was noted in the bronchial

THE TRANSMISSION OF YELLOW FEVER : EXPERIMENTS WITH THE "WOOLLY MONKEY" (LAGOTHRIX LAGO-TRICHA HUMBOLDT), THE "SPIDER MONKEY" (ATELEUS ATER F. CUVIER), AND THE "SQUIRREL MONKEY" (SAIMIRI SCIREUS LINNAEUS).

1. Saimiri sciureus has been infected with yellow fever virus, both by the inoculation of infectious blood and by the bites of infective mosquitoes. Some of the monkeys have died, showing lesions, including hepatic necrosis, suggesting yellow fever as seen in human beings and in rhesus monkeys. Virus has been transferred back to M. rhesus from infected Saimiri both by blood inoculation and by mosquito bites. The virus undoubtedly has been maintained through four direct passages in Saimiri. Reinoculations of infectious material into recovered monkeys have not given rise to invasion of the blood

Laventiana annectens, new genus and species: fossil evidence for the origins of callitrichine New World monkeys.

A previously unidentified middle Miocene primate from the La Venta deposits of Colombia is intermediate between squirrel monkeys (Saimiri) and callitrichines (marmosets and tamarins) in the morphology of the lower molars, mandible, and talus. Laventiana annectens is closely related to Saimiri and to Cebus (capuchin monkeys) yet resembles the probable callitrichine morphotype, demonstrating that archaic relatives of a Saimiri-like stock were suitable structural ancestors for the enigmatic callitrichines. Laventiana is also more primitive than Saimiri (= Neosaimiri) fieldsi from the same fauna,

Behavioral motor recovery in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine-lesioned squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus): changes in striatal dopamine and expression of tyrosine hydroxylase and dopamine transporter proteins.

The neurotoxicant 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) provides an excellent opportunity to study repair and response to injury in the basal ganglia. Administration to mammals leads to the destruction of nigrostriatal dopaminergic neurons and depletion of striatal dopamine. In the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus), MPTP-lesioning results in parkinsonian motor symptoms including bradykinesia, postural instability, and rigidity. Over time animals display motor behavioral recovery. To better understand this mechanism we employed a lesioning regimen of two or six subcutaneous injec

The development of exoerythrocytic stages of Plasmodium inui shortti in New World monkeys.

Attempts are being made to adapt Old World monkey malarial parasites to New World monkeys for vaccine and molecular studies. Several of these (Plasmodium cynomolgi Berok, Plasmodium fragile, and Plasmodium knowlesi) grow readily but have failed to produce infective gametocytes. Plasmodium gonderi and Plasmodium fieldi develop in the liver after sporozoite inoculation but have failed to establish infection in the erythrocyte. Anopheles dirus mosquitoes infected with Plasmodium inui shortti by feeding on infected macaques transmitted the infection to Saimiri boliviensis monkeys. Infective gameto

Comparative microcomputed tomography and histological study of maxillary pneumatization in four species of new world monkeys: the perinatal period.

In anthropoid primates, it has been hypothesized that the magnitude of maxillary sinus growth is influenced by adjacent dental and soft tissue matrices. Relatively, little comparative evidence exists for the perinatal period when secondary pneumatization is at its earliest stages in some primates. Here, dental and midfacial variables were studied in a perinatal sample of four anthropoid primates, including three callitrichines (Leontopithecus, Saguinus, and Callithrix) and Saimiri boliviensis. In the latter species, the maxillary recess (the ontogenetic precursor to a "true" maxillary sinus) d

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection of herpesvirus saimiri-immortalized human CD4-positive T lymphoblastoid cells: evidence of enhanced HIV-1 replication and cytopathic effects caused by endogenous interferon-gamma.

Herpesvirus saimiri (HVS) is a nonhuman primate gamma herpesvirus which can immortalize human T lymphocytes similar to Epstein-Barr virus immortalization of B cells. The HVS-immortalized T cell lines can be cloned and they remain functional, including susceptibility of CD4 expressing T cells to infection with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1). In this report, we have used five such HVS-transformed CD4-positive T cell clones to reevaluate the role of endogenous interferon gamma (IFN gamma) in HIV-1 replication in T cells. All five clones had similar phenotypes; and four clones constit

Use of non-human primate hepatocytes for in vitro study of the pre-erythrocytic stages of malaria parasites.

Methods were developed that allow invasion of sporozoites from simian malaria parasite species (Plasmodium cynomolgi, P. knowlesi, P. coatneyi, P. inui, P. gonderi, P. fragile) and development to schizont stages in rhesus and Saimiri monkey hepatocytes. The P. cynomolgi-rhesus monkey model was used to study inhibition of schizont development using monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) produced against the circumsporozoite (CS) protein of various strains and species of malaria parasites. Immunoelectron microscopy, using gold-labelled MAbs and cultured parasites, demonstrated that the CS protein persists

Preliminary observations on habitat utilization and diet in eight Surinam Monkeys.

The eight monkey species occurring in Surinam were studied in the Raleigh-vallen-Voltzberg Nature Reserve along the Coppename River. Special emphasis was placed on determining how these eight species divide up available habitat and food resources within a 300-ha study area. Cebus apella apella is probably the most adaptable of the Surinam monkeys. It was found mainly in the understory and lower to middle parts of the canopy of all five forest types (high rain forest, low rain forest, mountain savanna forest, liane forest, pina swamp forest) in the study area, and entered a variety of edge habi

Deregulation of cell growth by the K1 gene of Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus.

At a position equivalent to the gene encoding the saimiri transforming protein (STP) of herpesvirus saimiri (HVS), Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) contains a distinct open reading frame called K1. Although KSHV and HVS are related members of the rhadinovirus subgroup of gamma herpesviruses, K1 and STP exhibit no similarity in amino acid sequence or in structural organization. Since STP is required for the oncogenic potential of HVS, we investigated the functional consequence of K1 expression. Expression of the K1 gene in rodent fibroblasts produced morphologic changes and focus

Positional behavior and vertebral morphology in atelines and cebines.

Atelines are of particular interest to primate evolutionary studies because they converge with hominoids in postcranial anatomy, including the vertebral column. Currently, our understanding of ateline vertebral morphology is limited to mainly qualitative descriptions and functional interpretations based on general categories of positional behavior. Even less is known about the vertebrae of other platyrrhines. This study more closely examines vertebral form and function in atelines and cebines by combining direct field observations of axial postures and movements, assessments of spinal loading

Epidemiological and molecular characterization of a novel adenovirus of squirrel monkeys after fatal infection during immunosuppression.

Adenoviruses are a frequent cause of acute upper respiratory tract infections that can also cause disseminated disease in immunosuppressed patients. We identified a novel adenovirus, squirrel monkey adenovirus 1 (SqMAdV-1), as the cause of fatal infection in an immunocompromised squirrel monkey (Saimiri boliviensis) at the Keeling Center for Comparative Medicine and Research (KCCMR). Sequencing of SqMAdV-1 revealed that it is most closely related (80.4 % pairwise nucleotide identity) to the titi monkey (Plecturocebus cupreus) adenovirus (TMAdV). Although identified in the titi monkey, TMAdV is

The maxillary sinus in three genera of new world monkeys: factors that constrain secondary pneumatization.

The air filled cavities of paranasal sinuses are thought by some to appear opportunistically in spatial "gaps" within the craniofacial complex. Anthropoid primates provide excellent natural experiments for testing this model, since not all species possess a full complement of paranasal sinuses. In this study, two genera of monkeys (Saguinus and Cebuella) which form maxillary sinuses (MS) as adults were compared to squirrel monkeys (Saimiri spp.), in which a MS does not form. Using microCT and histomorphometric methods, the spatial position of paranasal spaces was assessed and size of the adjac
