Volume replacement with saline solutions during pancreatitis in rats and the hepatic profiles of apoptotic proteins and heat-shock proteins.

OBJECTIVE: Liver failure can occur as a consequence of the systemic inflammation after acute pancreatitis. We assessed the effect of volume repositioning with hypertonic saline solution or normal saline on hepatic cytokine production and the expression of heat-shock proteins and apoptotic proteins after acute pancreatitis. METHODS: Wistar rats were divided in four groups: C - control animals that were not subjected to insult or treatment; NT - animals that were subjected to acute pancreatitis and received no treatment; normal saline - animals that were subjected to acute pancreatitis and rece

[The influence of an isotonic solution containing benzalkonium chloride and a hypertonic seawater solution on the function of ciliary epithelium from the nasal cavity in vitro].

The objective of the present study was to evaluate the influence of an isotonic saline solution containing benzalconium chloride and of a hypertonic seawater solution on the function of ciliary epithelium in the nasal cavity in vitro. To this effect, we investigated the cytological material obtained from 35 children presenting with adenoid tissue hypertrophy. The tissue samples were taken from the nasal cavity by the standard method. A cellular biopsy obtained from each patient was distributed between three tubes that contained isotonic saline solution supplemented by benzalconium chloride (0.

Osmotherapy in brain edema: a questionable therapy.

Despite the fact that it has been used since the 1960s in diseases associated with brain edema and has been investigated in >150 publications on head injury, very little has been published on the outcome of osmotherapy. We can only speculate whether osmotherapy improves outcome, has no effect on outcome, or leads to worse outcome. Here we describe the action and potentially beneficial and adverse effects of the 2 most commonly used osmotic solutions, mannitol and hypertonic saline, and present some critical aspects of their use. There is a well-documented transient intracranial pressure (ICP)-

Hypertonic saline in critical care: a review of the literature and guidelines for use in hypotensive states and raised intracranial pressure.

Hypertonic saline has been in clinical use for many decades. Its osmotic and volume-expanding properties make it theoretically useful for a number of indications in critical care. This literature review evaluates the use of hypertonic saline in critical care. The putative mechanism of action is presented, followed by a narrative review of its clinical usefulness in critical care. The review was conducted using the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network method for the review of cohort studies, randomised-controlled trials and meta-analyses. The review focuses specifically on blood pressure

Hypertonic saline: A review of the literature and evaluation of its role in resuscitation of traumatic hypovolaemic shock.

Hypertonic saline solutions have properties that may be advantageous for resuscitation. In both animal and human studies rapid improvements in cardiovascular status occur when hypertonic saline is administered to hypovolaemic subjects and the possible side effects of hypertonic solutions have not been shown to be of clinical importance. Hypertonic saline certainly has a potential role in resuscitation of hypovolaemic casulaties in the modern military setting.

Hypertonic Saline in Human Sepsis: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

The role of hypertonic saline in sepsis remains unclear because clinical data are limited and the balance between beneficial and adverse effects is not well defined. In this systematic literature review, we searched PubMed and Embase to identify all randomized controlled trials up until January 31, 2018 in which hypertonic saline solutions of any concentration were used in patients of all ages with sepsis and compared to a cohort of patients receiving an isotonic fluid. We identified 8 randomized controlled trials with 381 patients who had received hypertonic saline. Lower volumes of hypertoni

Plasma expanders. An update.

This review of the literature has revealed that isotonic fluids, such as 0.9 percent sodium chloride and Ringer's lactate, are effective plasma volume expanders. Despite the continued use of a variety of colloid solutions in resuscitation, there is no good evidence to document a benefit of these solutions over the crystalloid solutions. The additional cost of colloid compared with crystalloid is another argument against colloid use. The most interesting solution currently being assessed is hypertonic saline solution. Its major benefit is that a small volume of fluid can achieve effective resus

Severe nasal hemorrhage in an anesthetized horse.

An 8-year-old Thoroughbred gelding with colic was anesthetized for surgical correction of right dorsal displacement of the ascending colon. Removal of the nasogastric tube at the end of surgery resulted in hemorrhage from the nares and loss of 24 L of blood. Treatment included administration of acetated Ringer's solution, hypertonic saline solution, and dobutamine. A blood transfusion was started after hemorrhage was controlled, and arterial pressure was restored to the prehemorrhage value, but was stopped after infusion of 2.7 L of blood because of a suspected adverse reaction. This case indi

Comparison of the effects of hypertonic saline and crystalloid infusions on haemodynamic parameters during haemorrhagic shock in dogs.

Haemorrhagic shock, a leading cause of mortality, frequently accompanies cardiac interventions. The administration of small volumes of hypertonic saline solutions and crystalloid solutions may reduce the severity and duration of shock, and result in a decrease in adverse outcomes. Under general anaesthesia, hypotension was induced in 12 healthy dogs. After 30 min, dogs received either hypertonic saline solution or lactated Ringer's solution for fluid, resuscitation. In both groups, decreases in haemodynamic variables were observed during the shock period. Following resuscitation, increases in

Isotonic balanced fluid versus 0.9% saline in patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury: A double-blinded randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a global health concern with significant economic impact. Optimal fluid therapy aims to restore intravascular volume, maintain cerebral perfusion pressure and blood flow, thus preventing secondary brain injury. While 0.9% saline (NS) is commonly used, concerns about acid-base and electrolyte imbalance and development of acute kidney injury (AKI) lead to consideration of balanced fluids as an alternative. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare the outcomes of patients with moderate to severe TBI treated with Sterofundin (SF) versus NS

Intravenous pretreatment of hypertonic saline can prevent systemic hypotension induced by spinal anesthesia.

BACKGROUND: Hypertonic saline improves organ perfusion and patient survival during hemorrhagic shock because it expands plasma volume and increases tissue oxygenation. Its beneficial results have been reported in patients suffering from hypotension during spinal anesthesia. The purpose of this study was to compare the influence between prehydration with 3% hypertonic saline and with isotonic lactated Ringer's solution on the hemodynamic changes and serum electrolyte concentrations in patients undergoing spinal anesthesia. METHODS: Sixty ASA class I patients scheduled for herniorrhapy under sp

[Treatment of severe hypovolemia with hypertonic saline].

Hypertonic saline (HS) has been used since 1980 in the treatment of traumatised, hypotensive patients. Studies show more pronounced and stable increments in blood pressure and reduced mortality in various subgroups of patients treated with HS compared to isotonic fluids. When infused in the setting of hypovolaemia HS instantaneously expands plasma volume and improves central haemodynamics through increased filling pressures and direct myocardial stimulation. HS, as compared to isotonic fluids, causes precapillary vasodilation, reduction of cell oedema and decreased haematocrit and hence improv

Small volume resuscitation with hypertonic sodium chloride solution in cattle undergoing surgical correction of abomasal volvulus.

A randomized clinical trial was conducted to compare the efficacy of rapid intravenous (IV) infusion of a 7.2% hypertonic saline solution with that of continuous application of an isotonic solution in stabilizing the circulation of cows with abomasal volvulus. Cattle treated with hypertonic saline had a significantly greater reduction in volume deficit within the first 10 min of therapy than cows treated with isotonic saline (from 5.9 ± 4.8 to 2.1 ± 4.4 L/100 kg vs. 7.0 ± 4.5 to 4.9 ± 3.8 L/100 kg, respectively). The central venous pressure (CVP) of the cows given the hypertonic saline rose wi

Hypertonic saline inhibits luminal sodium channels in respiratory epithelium.

Physical exercise with increased ventilation leads to a considerable rise in water loss from the airways. The mechanisms underlying the regulation of transepithelial fluid transport necessary to compensate for these losses are unknown but may include changes in luminal ion channel conductance. The present study was designed to examine the effects of an increase in luminal chloride and sodium concentrations which may locally occur during hyperventilation on luminal ion conductance in the respiratory epithelium of healthy controls and patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis (CF). Changes in lumi

Intravital imaging of mucus transport in asthmatic mice using microscopic optical coherence tomography.

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases. Mucus overproduction is consistently linked to asthma morbidity and mortality. Despite the knowledge of the importance of mucus, little data exist on how mucus is transported in asthma and the immediate effects of therapeutic intervention. We therefore used microscopic optical coherence tomography (mOCT) to study spontaneous and induced mucus transport in an interleukin-13 (IL-13)-induced asthma mouse model and examined the effects of isotonic (0.9% NaCl) and hypertonic saline (7% NaCl), which are used to induce mucus transport in cystic fibro

Antiulcer activity of hypertonic solutions in the rat: possible role of prostaglandins.

The effects of hypertonic solutions on gastric acidity and on experimental gastric and duodenal ulcers as well as on gastric prostaglandins (PGs) were studied in the rat. The oral administration of a 10% NaCl solution resulted in complete absence of free acidity and very significant reductions in total acidity 24 h after pyloric ligation. The antiulcer effect of hypertonic saline was studied in three experimental models. In pyloric-ligated rats, both the incidence and the severity of gastric ulcers were remarkably reduced by hypertonic saline treatment. Indomethacin-induced gastric erosions we
