Distribution of microplastics and microorganisms and their relationship in high-salinity soil.

Irrigation is one of the main methods used to increase crop yield in saline soils. However, microplastics (MPs) occur in saline soil due complex irrigation water sources and agricultural operations, and these may affect the soil microbial population structure. We selected soil from the Inner Mongolia section of the Hetao Irrigation District as the research object to determine the microplastic (MP) pollution status and microbial population structure and to explore the relationship between them. The results showed that (1) MPs were mainly polyethylene terephthalate (white and blue), with particl

Straw mineralization and carbon dioxide emissions in soils with different salinity levels.

Straw application is widely used to reclaim saline soils. However, the characteristics of straw mineralization and its induced priming effects (PE) in saline soil are largely unknown. Thus, we conducted a 180-day saline soil incubation experiment to observe the characteristics of straw mineralization and CO2 emissions. Four salinity levels, i.e., 3.0 g kg-1 (BS), 5.0 g kg-1 (LS), 10.0 g kg-1 (MS), and 15.0 g kg-1 (HS), were established, to which 13C-labeled maize straw was added at a rate of 5.0%. Results showed that the straw mineralization rate and the amount of potentially mineralized straw

Salinity and prolactin regulate anoctamin 1 in the model teleost, Fundulus heteroclitus.

To maintain internal ion balance in marine environments, teleost fishes leverage seawater (SW)-type ionocytes to actively secrete Na+ and Cl- into the environment. It is well established that SW-type ionocytes use apically expressed cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator 1 (Cftr1) as a conduit for Cl- to exit the gill. Here, we investigated whether the Ca2+-activated Cl- channel, anoctamin 1 (Ano1), provides an additional path for Cl--secretion in euryhaline mummichogs (Fundulus heteroclitus). Two ano1 gene isoforms, denoted ano1.1a and -1.1b, exhibited higher expression in the gi

Adaptive characteristics of indigenous microflora in an organically contaminated high salinity groundwater.

Salinity, a critical factor, could directly or indirectly affect the microbial community structure and diversity. Changes in salinity levels act as environmental filters that influence the transformation of key microbial species. This study investigates the adaptive characteristics of indigenous microflora in groundwater in relation to external organic pollutants under high salinity stress. A highly mineralized shallow groundwater in Northwest China was conducted as the study area, and six representative sampling points were chosen to explore the response of groundwater hydrochemical parameter

The jasmonate biosynthesis Gene OsOPR7 can mitigate salinity induced mitochondrial oxidative stress.

Salinity poses a serious threat to global agriculture and human food security. A better understanding of plant adaptation to salt stress is, therefore, mandatory. In the non-photosynthetic cells of the root, salinity perturbs oxidative balance in mitochondria, leading to cell death. In parallel, plastids accumulate the jasmonate precursor cis (+)12-Oxo-Phyto-Dienoic Acid (OPDA) that is then translocated to peroxisomes and has been identified as promoting factor for salt-induced cell death as well. In the current study, we probed for a potential interaction between these three organelles that a

Impact of salinity on colloidal ozone aphrons in removing phenanthrene from sediments.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) tend to adsorb and accumulate on sediments owing to their hydrophobicity and persistence. Salinity is the predominant factor determining the PAH partition between aqueous and solid phases in freshwater, estuaries and seawater. This study focuses on the impact of salinity on the phenanthrene (PHE) removal from sediments using an in situ and targeted remediation technology - colloidal ozone aphrons (COAs). The ozone-encapsulated colloidal aphrons exhibited increasing air holdup but decreasing stability with the salinity increasing from 0.5‰ to 35‰. The hyd

How Does Salinity Shape Bacterial and Fungal Microbiomes of Alnus glutinosa Roots?

Black alder (Alnus glutinosa Gaertn.) belongs to dual mycorrhizal trees, forming ectomycorrhizal (EM) and arbuscular (AM) root structures, as well as represents actinorrhizal plants that associate with nitrogen-fixing actinomycete Frankia sp. We hypothesized that the unique ternary structure of symbionts can influence community structure of other plant-associated microorganisms (bacterial and fungal endophytes), particularly under seasonally changing salinity in A. glutinosa roots. In our study we analyzed black alder root bacterial and fungal microbiome present at two forest test sites (salin

The effect of water salinity on wood breakdown in semiarid Mediterranean streams.

Saline streams occur naturally and they are distributed worldwide, particularly in arid and semiarid regions, but human activities have also increased their number in many parts of the world. Little attention has been paid to assess increasing salt effects on organic matter decomposition. The objectives of this study were to analyse wood breakdown rates and how salinity affects them in 14 streams that exemplify a natural salinity gradient. We also analysed the effect of this gradient on changes in wood chemical composition, fungal biomass and microbial activity. Our results showed low breakdow

Drinking cholera: salinity levels and palatability of drinking water in coastal Bangladesh.

OBJECTIVES: To measure the salinity levels of common water sources in coastal Bangladesh and explore perceptions of water palatability among the local population to investigate the plausibility of linking cholera outbreaks in Bangladesh with ingestion of saline-rich cholera-infected river water. METHODS: Hundred participants took part in a taste-testing experiment of water with varying levels of salinity. Salinity measurements were taken of both drinking and non-drinking water sources. Informal group discussions were conducted to gain an in-depth understanding of water sources and water uses.

The osmoregulatory effects of rearing Mozambique tilapia in a tidally changing salinity.

The native distribution of Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus, is characterized by estuarine areas subject to salinity variations between fresh water (FW) and seawater (SW) with tidal frequency. Osmoregulation in the face of changing environmental salinity is largely mediated through the neuroendocrine system and involves the activation of ion uptake and extrusion mechanisms in osmoregulatory tissues. We compared plasma osmolality, plasma prolactin (PRL), pituitary PRL mRNA, and mRNA of branchial ion pumps, transporters, channels, and PRL receptors in tilapia reared in FW, SW, brackis

Analysis of the anticancer phytochemicals in Andrographis paniculata Nees. under salinity stress.

Salinity causes the adverse effects in all physiological processes of plants. The present study aimed to investigate the potential of salt stress to enhance the accumulation of the anticancer phytochemicals in Andrographis paniculata accessions. For this purpose, 70-day-old plants were grown in different salinity levels (0.18, 4, 8, 12, and 16 dSm(-1)) on sand medium. After inducing a period of 30-day salinity stress and before flowering, all plants were harvested and the data on morphological traits, proline content and the three anticancer phytochemicals, including andrographolide (AG), neoa

Salinity-tolerant larvae of mosquito vectors in the tropical coast of Jaffna, Sri Lanka and the effect of salinity on the toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis to Aedes aegypti larvae.

BACKGROUND: Dengue, chikungunya, malaria, filariasis and Japanese encephalitis are common mosquito-borne diseases endemic to Sri Lanka. Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, the major vectors of dengue, were recently shown to undergo pre-imaginal development in brackish water bodies in the island. A limited survey of selected coastal localities of the Jaffna district in northern Sri Lanka was carried out to identify mosquito species undergoing pre-imaginal development in brackish and saline waters. The effect of salinity on the toxicity of Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis larvicide to Ae. aegy

Hypertonic saline, isotonic saline, water restriction, long loops diuretics, urea or vaptans to treat hyponatremia.

Introduction: Hyponatremia is the most common fluid and electrolyte abnormality. It is associated with much higher morbidity and mortality rates than found in non hyponatremic patients.Areas covered: When the physician is faced to a hyponatremic patient he first has to confirm that hyponatremia is associated with hypoosmolality. Then he must answer to a series of questions: What is its origin? Is it acute or chronic? Which treatment is the most appropriate? We will discuss the various options for the treatment of hypotonic hyponatremia. For a better comprehensive approach of the treatment we w

Finding a solution: Heparinised saline versus normal saline in the maintenance of invasive arterial lines in intensive care.

BACKGROUND: We assessed the impact of heparinised saline versus 0.9% normal saline on arterial line patency. Maintaining the patency of arterial lines is essential for obtaining accurate physiological measurements, enabling blood sampling and minimising line replacement. Use of heparinised saline is associated with risks such as thrombocytopenia, haemorrhage and mis-selection. Historical studies draw variable conclusions but suggest that normal saline is at least as effective at maintaining line patency, although recent evidence has questioned this. METHODS: We conducted a prospective analysi
