Production of sterile trout (Triploids) by chromosome set manipulation using thermal shock treatment in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) from Kashmir Himalayas.

Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) is a promising cultivable fish species with significant potential for expansion. As a cold-water fish belonging to the Salmonidae family, it requires an optimal temperature range of 10-15°C for optimal growth. This study explores a method for producing sterile rainbow trout with maximum survival rates by using heat shock treatment to enhance growth characteristics and improve aquaculture practices. A control group and four heat shock treatments were given at 26°C and 28°C for 10 min, applied 15 and 20 min after the mixing of eggs and milt, using a water bath

Exploring the Effect of Whole-Genome Duplication on Salmonid LincRNA Repertoire.

Long intergenic non-coding RNAs (lincRNAs) are key epigenetic regulators of genome function, yet their evolutionary dynamics following whole-genome duplication (WGD) events remain poorly understood. Salmonids, which underwent a lineage-specific autotetraploidization (salmonid-specific WGD, ~88-100 million years ago), provide an excellent model to investigate the retention, divergence, and functional potential of recently duplicated non-coding elements. LincRNA repertoires were compared across five genome-annotated salmonids (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, O. kisutch, O. mykiss, Salmo salar, and S.

A Genomic Tool to Tackle Cryptic Diversity Demonstrates the Potential for Off-Target Use of GT-Seq Panels.

A comprehensive understanding of life history is vital to successful species conservation and management. When different life history stages are accompanied by considerable morphological or cryptic variation, such as the egg and larval phases exhibited by most fishes, genomic tools are essential for identifying species so that early-life ecology questions can be studied. Genotyping-in-thousands by sequencing (GT-seq) has recently emerged as a targeted and efficient approach for species identification. We leveraged existing genomic and transcriptomic data to develop a GT-seq panel capable of di

Hypoxia affects the ontogeny of the hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal axis functioning in the lake whitefish (Coregonus clupeaformis).

Early life stages are sensitive to environmental insults and changes during critical developmental periods; this can often result in altered adult behaviour and physiology. Examining the development of the hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis and its responsiveness, or lack thereof, during development are important for understanding the short- and long-term impacts of stressors on embryonic and larval fish. We examined the ontogeny of the HPI axis in embryonic (21, 38, 63, 83 and 103 days post-fertilisation (dpf)) and larval (1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks post-hatch (wph)) lake whitefish (Corego

Effect of catecholamines on deformability of red cells from trout: relative roles of cyclic AMP and cell volume.

1. In the presence of catecholamine the nucleated red blood cells of trout show a large increase in cell volume as a result of an accumulation of sodium and chloride due to activation of an amiloride-sensitive, cyclic AMP-dependent Na+-H+ exchanger allowing Na+ to enter in exchange for internal H+. 2. The activation of this cyclic AMP-dependent Na+-H+ exchange is considered to be involved in an adaptive response to hypoxia by increasing the oxygen-carrying capacity of erythrocytes. But cell swelling could increase resistance to blood flow and thus impair the expected physiological advantages f

Examination of in vitro melatonin secretion from superfused trout (Salmo gairdneri) pineal organs maintained under diel illumination or continuous darkness.

Melatonin secretion was measured from rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) pineal organs maintained individually under flow-through whole organ culture (superfusion) conditions. Radioimmunoassay of perfusate fractions collected during controlled photic conditions demonstrated that melatonin secretion in vitro remained basal during the photophase and underwent increases in titer during the scotophase. While amounts of melatonin (mel) secreted were characteristic of individual pineal organs, photophase values ranged between 0.25 and 0.75 ng mel/ml and scotophase values ranged from 6 to 10 ng mel/ml o

From genetics to migration: emerging insights into salmonid responses to environmental change from NoWPaS 2026.

The International Workshop of PhDs and Post-doctoral Fellows on Anadromous Salmonids (NoWPaS) provides a platform for early-career researchers to present and discuss emerging research on salmonid biology. The 2026 meeting, held in Iceland, brought together contributions spanning salmonid ecology, physiology, evolutionary genetics, conservation, and movement ecology. Here, we summarise the main themes of the meeting, highlighting how salmonids continue to serve as powerful model systems. Across sessions, studies emphasised the importance of intraspecific diversity, phenotypic plasticity, and lo

The Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory and size at maturity/maximum size relationships for salmonid populations occupying flowing waters.

The slowing of growth as fish age has long been believed to be related to energy expenditure for maturation, and this rationalization has been used to explain why, across nearly all fish species, the relationship between size at first maturity (Lm ) and maximum (Lmax ) or asymptotic length (L∞ ) is relatively constant. In contrast, the Gill-Oxygen Limitation Theory (GOLT) postulates that (a) fish growth slows because as they grow, their two-dimensional ability to extract oxygen from the water diminishes relative to their three-dimensional weight gain, and (b) they can only invest energy for ma

Caligus rogercresseyi infestation is associated with Piscirickettsia salmonis-attributed mortalities in farmed salmonids in Chile.

Caligidosis and Piscirickettsiosis are currently the most important sanitary challenges for the Chilean salmon industry. Caligidosis is caused by the ectoparasite, Caligus rogercresseyi and Piscirickettsiosis is caused by the intracellular bacterium, Piscirickettsia salmonis. Both diseases are highly prevalent and widely distributed in farming areas in Chile. The co-occurrence of the two diseases is frequently reported on salmon farms. However, there is little epidemiological evidence as to whether these two diseases are associated and generate interactive effects. This study was undertaken to

A partly stage-structured model for the abundance of salmon lice in salmonid farms.

The parasitic salmon louse constrains growth in the Norwegian salmon farming industry through density dependent host-parasite interaction. Hence, there is a need for insight into how increases in salmon production, varying spatial organisation of the production and pest control strategies affect salmon louse population dynamics. Here we present a new salmon louse model for exploring effects of varying salmon farming conditions on spatio-temporal abundances of the parasite. The salmon louse model is partly stage-structured, comprising of (i) adult female lice and (ii) other mobile stages of lic

Illumina Sequencing Reveals Aberrant Expression of MicroRNAs and Their Variants in Whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) Liver after Exposure to Microcystin-LR.

Molecular analyses show that challenging fish with microcystin-LR (MC-LR) causes perturbations of microRNA (miRNA) signaling. However, the significance and scope of these alterations is currently unknown. To address this issue, we studied miRNA gene expression in the liver of juvenile whitefish, C. lavaretus, during 28 days of exposure to a subacute dose of MC-LR (100 μg·kg-1 body mass). Using genomic resources of Atlantic salmon (AGKD03), the mature miRNA library of Atlantic salmon (miRBase-21) and bioinformatics tools (sRNAbench), we discovered and annotated a total of 377 distinct mature mi

Drug resistance in sea lice: a threat to salmonid aquaculture.

Sea lice are copepod ectoparasites with vast reproductive potential and affect a wide variety of fish species. The number of parasites causing morbidity is proportional to fish size. Natural low host density restricts massive parasite dispersal. However, expanded salmon farming has shifted the conditions in favor of the parasite. Salmon farms are often situated near wild salmonid migrating routes, with smolts being particularly vulnerable to sea lice infestation. In order to protect both farmed and wild salmonids passing or residing in the proximity of the farms, several measures are taken. Me

[Assessment of Nanophyetus salmincola schikhobalowl (Skrjiabin et Podjiapolskaja, 1931) infestation of salmonlike fishes in the rivers of the Khabarovsk Territory].

Parasitological investigations of 529 specimens of 7 fish species from the water basins of the Khabarovsk Territory in 2009-2013 revealed the high extensity (11.7 to 100%) and intensity (as many as 9341 larvae per fish) of invasion with N. s. schikhobalowi metacercaria in salmonlike fishes from the mountain tributaries (Khor, Anyui, and Manoma) of the Amur river. The examined specimens of four salmonlike fish species (Thymallus tugarinae, Hucho taimen, Brachymystax tumensis and B. lenok) showed an increase in all indicators of infestation: invasion extensity (IE), invasion intensity (II), and

Lack of circadian regulation of in vitro melatonin release from the pineal organ of salmonid teleosts.

In many teleost species, the photoreceptive pineal organ harbors the circadian clock that regulates melatonin release in the pineal organ itself. However, the pineal organ of three salmonids (rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou, and sockeye salmon Oncorhynchus nerka) did not exhibit circadian rhythms in melatonin release when maintained under constant darkness (DD) in vitro, suggesting that the pineal organs of all salmonids lack the circadian regulation of melatonin production. To test this hypothesis, the pineal organ of seven salmonids (common whitefish Coregon
